Georgetown Club Tournament Tilt TOWN HERALD THURSDAY SEPT 16 1971 70 TENNIS PLAYERS VIED FOR 7 TITLES Georgetown Tennis Club recently held a tournament on the Joseph Gibbons Park court with seven clashes open for en try Over TO people participated The first rounds of this knock out competition were played on Saturday August and Sunday These were then followed through and the courts were in use every night except Friday of the following week All games were officially umpired and had linesmen In attendance As Labour Day weekend ap preached It was decided to hold the finals on the weekend of September 11th and the courts were filled during the proceeding week by practising finalists These were all double matches to involve more people in a shorter time Next year singles tour na merits may be started The results of the finals are given below and every game was very well attended Lions Club president Eric Hooten presented the prizes Simpsons Gift vouchers to the winners Mark Mitchell and Dcnise Thompson although both Juniors by age fought their way through the Senior Mixed to lose In the semi finals Massar and Thompson again both Juniors because of insufficient enrolment of Juniors entered In the Ladles Novice but were eventually beaten In the finals AT PROMISE All the preliminary rounds were played on the basis of one set The finals were the best of three sets J played three sets in he Mens Novice Final and three more sets In the Mixed Novice Finals on very warm day Many of the Junior players have only begun playing tennis this year It was very encouraging to see parents there supporting their children through each round There Is great promise In many of these junior players and hopes to foster and coach these next year a club spokesman told The Herald The most scoreless for the 1st 3 innings the Queens trotted 9 runs across the plate and then plied 11 runs across clinch the match In he Game stars were shared between the winners and the losers with Cheryl Webster of Mardell and Cheryl McNellly of the Queens getting the nod Home runs all came off the bats of the winners with Cheryl McNellly gelling the most one with her grand slam homer In the inning Teammate Linda George tagged the only other homer or the Winning pitchers were Susan Linda George and Milton JUNIOR I Ladies senior doubles and champions Jan Barnes and Linda Rice Pauline Kent are will take part in a one game knockout battle that will make the day painfully short for some teams but overall the playoffs will not be as painfully long for the finalists as in past years There will be a booth to keep the girls supplied with hot dogs ham burgs and pop The day s highlight will come when the trophies are awarded by Mayor Bill Smith to the junior senior Home Run Queens The Most Improved Junior and Senior players and the Junior and Senior Champions CLOSE BATTLF Going into the final games both the Junior and senior leagues have many positions tied as well as a very close race both Home Run Queens It should be an interesting and close battle the last day In case of a tie for the Queens trophy the girls will continue to have their home runs counted throughout the championship games based on an equal number of games played The 1st place team In the senior division wil get a bye on the first game while teams and meet teams and respect In the junior league cam 1 In the standings will meet the place team and so on down the standings We would also like to remind the girls and their coaches that all sweaters must be returned lo their coaches preferably at the conclusion of the wind up The Senior Ladies League will not take part In this Saturday Championship but will hold their own set of round robin games to decide the League champs Ihe week after the
