Police Conduct Elmer Flies at Schools fill Safety Rules Broken With the start or another school year an ever Increasing number of children will be using the streets coming to and from school streets which ore getting steadily busier with an increased volume of care The saf pa ssagc or these children should be the desire of every citizen of Georgetown and this cannot be accomplished unless both motorists and children have respect for each other both must be percent alert If Georgetown Is to remain fatality free again this year As In previous years the Georgetown Police will be conducting traffic safely classes in all the schools These classes have been very well received by the children However it must be Suite obvious to many motorists lot the lessons have made very little impression on some of them Riding double falling to stop at stop signs and riding at night without lights on bicycles have been an everyday and all too common occurrence It is the Intention of the Police Depart ment to curb these practices as much as possible through education and enforcement ELMER FLIES This year Elmer Flags arc being used at all elementary schools In town and as long as the students of each school go accident free the flags remain flying However If a child disobeys any safety rule and is injured in an accident the flag will be removed for a period of two weeks It Is unfortunate but truo that people do not think too much about safety until an accident strikes them personally This is evidenced by the children riding bicycles on Georgetown streets without having been taught how to ride properly and safely As long as they can balance themselves they are considered to be riders this is far from true The next time you see a child wobbling oil over the road or tiding double or going through stop signs or riding without a light at night pause and think Think of the danger Think of the consequences BURDEN And finally ask yourself Are my children doing the same thing There is nothing in this world that happens so quickly as an accident nothing takes so long to forget Children learn quickly they also forget quickly way ball game or a girl going to a party hardly ever thinks of safety rules An extra burden Is placed on all motorists where children are involved and this burden Is increased greatly during school months The police department and the schools are striving to make this a safe year for all concerned but this will not be possible without the cooperation of all parents Dont let It be your child who brings down the Elmer Flag The Elmer this year were donated
