Georgetown Herald A Division of Homo Newspapers Company limited Main Street South Georgetown Ontario WALTER C Publisher Pane GEORGETOWN HERALD THURSDAY NOV EDITORIAL COMMENT Autumn Leaves and Lovely Homes Back on the job again after a two week holiday during which we viewed a variety of wonderful scenery which our southern neighbours provide A day or two of leisurely driving through the mountains of Pennsylvania gave us the autumn colours In all their glory Then a return trip along Virginias Skyline Drive which provides a glorious vista along the Blue Ridge Mountains Luck was with us here for the next day heavy rain caused landslides which closed the drive for the next few days Our southerly destination Charleston is a historic city where one can easily spend two or three days absorbing the past viewing beautiful homes and streets which have retained their colonial charm Found Myrtle Beach offseason not so glamorous as it would be when more people were there Shuttered summer homes have a depressing effect wherever one sees them Bustling Baltimore provided one of the best museums a private collection which was given to the city And the Richmond Missed the News The paucity of Canadian news when one is in Ihc States is reason enough lo be happily home again Once across the border On a no becomes vcrj far away This lime Kosygins Ottawa visit and the attack incident was featured in the USA and even Norman bobbed up on a borrowed clip from news But then it was curtains The Ontario election was a blank and we had to phone home I earn pie results One wonders of course what Is hap pening In Georgetown There is always some sadness We lost an old neighbour Charlie Davis one of Virginia art gallery with its collection of jewelled Easter eggs made for the Russian royal family is another must Tor anyone travelling thai way Missing our own Little Theatre production here we were fortunate in taking in a novel presentation when the Winchester Pa group presented a drama which takes place In a courtroom Cer tainly authentic for they held it In the actual courthouse chose a jury from the spectators The play had a novel twist it had two endings depending on how the audience jury ruled on the murder case Staying at Pa our last night out across the road was large property billed as the home of Little League baseball Curious we crossed the highway met- an enthusiastic staff member and had a conducted lour ending with a slide presentation or how the program originated Wondered If Georgetown I capitalize on its claim to fame as the originator of Utile NHL hockey those solid substantial men who in their quiet way build a community Shocked to hear of the accidental death of Gus His beautiful in Holy Cross Church will keep his memory alive Belter news was that the Bliss firm is not closing and thai Georgetown may have GO transportation to the city in the near future Its only when one is away for a week or wo that you realize how much would miss your own home own and your own province Other communities are nice to visit But best all The Way It Should Be While wc arc often prone to sigh for the good old days one which can stay in the realm of nostalgia is the Halloween pranks so common in past This year Halloween was free of shenanigans and almost totally reserved for polite processions of and who called to have their costumes admired and to sample the goodies which most homes had on hand BONUS FOR AUTUMN TOURISTS A few decades ago practical jokes were often carried too far Impediments placed on highways caused accidents Fires were not common and Halloween was often a fearful night instead of funfest Gradually the pranks have ended and the night has become one for dress up and house house visits for candy and apples Lets hope that it continues this way People driving through the local countryside during the height of the autumn colour received a bonus If they travelled the Line north town Hickory Falls was worth taking the detour made necessary by a bridge being out of temporarily So Many Suffer But So Fow Know The Editor Dear Sir On behalf of The Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society I should like to thank you for your demonstrated Interest in the Society in public service support during We are particularly grateful to for those stories which appeared during September Arthritis Month One of the greatest ironies of the arthritis problem Is that so many who suffer from it know so little about the disease Although no specific cure is known it has been demonstrated that severe disability due to arthritis can be prevented In about four out of five patients The key tics in a combination of early diagnosis and prompt treatment It is our belief that knowing the facts about arthritis is a vital step in helping people to help Hi em selves We appreciate your interest In assisting the Society to convey this message of hope to the lens of thousands who suffer from arthritis In Canada We hope may continue lo merit your concern With kind regards Cordially Douglas a user Campaign Chairman Georgetown Branch A It TURNING BACK TIME WHERE IT ALL ENDS UP Royal Canadian Lglon Competition REMEMBER by Margerlie Neveu N B Translated from French by A St Laurent Branch 120 November nth Remem brance Day For you who are so young what does this mean is It just another meaningless celebration has It become just another routine day Do you remember when your parents used to accompany you to the cenotaph and used to follow the parade No more have grown older now loci the urge of following parades and somehow remembrance day Is no longer meaningful to you Friend did you ever ask yourself how you happen to be living in a free country while so many others do not know the meaning or liberty If on nth this question does not come to you then you do not know the true meaning of remembronce day day of mourning which is symbolic of our sane generation Liberty Peace and love These three words are on the lips of those who are sup posedly young these three words have become the slogan the with it generation they open new horizons However do you know that without the sacrifice of thousands of lives these three words would be meaningless and would be replaced by hatred war and domination Do you know that In order for to be free blood flowed This may all sound ridiculous lo you that is In order to obtain peace innocent people must ale blood must flow Unfortunately It is so Mans heart is without pity full of hale and destroys those who oppose his will But you who ore so young you want to change this you want love to be the beginning or all to you any human being Is your brother no matter his colour be It white black or love has no frontier is of tcrnational communication Inasmuch as the word love is anchored in your heart so should the word remem brance You must remember those who left the security of their home so that you may be free You must remember the In the Mail Bag Says No Need For Paid Fire Brigade 10 Chapel St W Dear Sir I would like to reply lo Ihc disc and comments made at council which appeared in the edition of your paper about our fire protection It seems that Mr Morrow and some of his companions on council have an immeasurable appetite for finding ways of raising our taxes and spending them as fast as they possible can There are a very few on council ho tr to keep our tuxes at a tolerable level and still achieve adequate service for the town I have nothing but high praise for these few Mr Morrow stated that the fire THE ONEILL BUILDING BEFORE 1920 FIRE Of all he many views of Georgetowns downtown in the old days contributed to the Turning Back Time series over the years we have never had one from this particular angle giving us such a good look at the ONeill building extreme right which stood where the AJluii food marku Eatons office now stands The storey brick struc ture gulled by fire in the iWOe marshal recommended we have a paid fire brigade 1 personally believe that our volunteer department does just as good a job as any paid brigade would do which already has been proven many times in past years Lets face it a town is like a small child It has to crawl before it can walk and I do not believe Georgetown is yet big enough to walk It seems that when the reeve lo a council meeting he is still flying his aircraft up In the wild blue yonder I think he and his crew should lei their flaps down and come in for a landing Maybe father who left behind a crying beloved wife and innocent children You must remember the mother who was broken hearted on learning of her sons death All those soldiers who died in combat also were your brothers and they proved It by dying for you isnt this the greatest proof of love you can have They wished so much for you to be free and happy that they gave their lives without any con sideration for themselves Isnt this true love the love that Jesus preached And you today you want to live love you want to follow the hazardous road but the one which leads to happiness But along this road remember the fallen soldier on the battlefield remember Ihe tears shed the suffering follow your road but do not forget to be thankful And when the day of remembrance comes you will know its significance that it is not a pretext for a days holiday nor an old habit you at least will know the im porta nee of this occasion remember J APPROVE CAR WASH LOCATION Approval for a new Street was given Monday at council meeting S Levy representing Wonder Car Washes was given approval for Ihe Installation which will be at the corner of Sinclair Avenue and the highway Cr Phil Siddall opposed the permit Im distressed to sec Guelph Street turning into a gasoline alley and odds and sods he said 1 can find a technicality I II vole against it Checking the zoning by law he said stations are allowed In this area there is no mention of I car washes so he opposed the permit The motion carried on vote with Deputy Speight absent from the meeting BILL SMILEY It Happens to Everyone Bill Weve just been through a perfect late fall weekend In these parts The sort of weather wed been wailing for all summer and which refused to arrive But the weather was the only thing that was perfect The rest of weekend was a comedy of My wife lost her glasses She can see about eighteen miles but has trouble with the small print So I was volunteered on a beautiful Saturday afternoon when I had planned to get in a last game of golf to drive miles round trip with her to the optometrist For an eye examination Oh no she could have obtained a prescription from the doctor No Merely so that she could choose frames for the dam things that would enhance her beauty She had explained that the optometrist was closed on Wednesday afternoons and that since I was free on Saturday there was no reason I drive her yak yak yak Just before we left she won dered whether she should call to make sure he was open 1 scoffed at the Idea Dont be silly If he closes Wednesday afternoon hell be open Saturday Especially with all that out of town business So she dldn mellowed a bit on the way with sun a world of magnificent colour But Id still rather have been six other places We got here parked walked the store and you grabbed it he was closed Ten minutes later we were at the curt recrimination point and minutes that we were laughing as we lumbered off on the home Journey Arrived nous and the house was like an oven We were bickering about who had turned the thermostat up to it was outside when a sepulchral voice from above informed us that our only begotten son had arrived taken a shower and turned on Ihe heat to avoid a chill Hes the same who will walk around in his bare feet in winter Following a longdistance call of a few days before we had half- expected him along with his kid sister Half because you never know with them However Old FussBoots had decided we should stock up with grub Just In case We hadnt all been together for about eight months So we went all out a turkey a big roost wine all sorts of goodies The freezer was bulging with meat Kim didnt come When his mother asked Hugh what he would like for dinner and rhymed off the delicacies he answered calmly that he was a vegetarian and had brought his own little packet of brown rice There are times when its hard to keep your temper but managed By the lime wed sorted this out coolly we had a desultory dinner of boiled brown rice for him Kentucky fried chicken for us But fate still had a facile fickle finger for- us Hugh had come home to get away from the city see the glory of fall foliage walk in the woods and on the lonely beach He woke up Sunday morning stretched his neck and had a muscle spasm This Is a thing that sets your neck over on one shoulder and gives you a foretaste of hell if you try to turn your head Spent most of Sunday another perfect day trying to find the local chiropractor at his carefully concealed cottage ten miles from town and thereafter slapping hot towels on Hughs neck He could see only the foliage on one side of the road as drove Home to Mamma and the last blow had fallen The freezer compartment of the fridge wasnt working And it loaded with meal All of which was rapidly getting limp The meat is in the neighbours freezer Hughs neck is slightly belter and at time of writing Its
