Christmas Eve Communion Only Two Advents And We Stand Well Between by Rev Harold Martin St John United Church Advent is a dangerous word We know it too well and its meanlnglsobvlous Of course it points to the coming of God In Christ But when Two thousand years ago in Palestine andoncemore a second coming at the end of history Yet if this of our understanding we are poor indeed Or perhaps wilfully evasive For In our frailly and fear we arc prone to consign God to the faroff past or future Life will be quieter and less disturbed if He can be kept Just there at a safe distance anywhere but In the here and now We are always ready to look back to the Jesus of history or forward to God 9 final triumph There can only be two Advents as we stand well between them How wrong we ore God is always coming breaking through repeatedly into the world life and ours Yet we should try again to take in the significance of that particular Advent which gives meaning to the others and which helps us to recognize them Come crythcshepherdsinthefamitiorstory Let us see this thing that has happened The vital point to grasp Is Just there this thing happened When our forefathers taught us to affirm our faith in a Christ who suffered under Pontius Pilate they were firmly arid deliberately nailing the event down In history There ore elements In the Nativity stories that we may find it difficult to accept details which though they have their own significance are not essential but peripheral Yet the central fact stands out like a rock and John takes us to the heart of the matter The Word became Flesh and dwelt among us So also in the realm of hymns Charles Wesley confronts us w Gospel the real significance of the Incarnation Being source begins to be And God Himself Is born Hundreds of years before the coming of God In Christ the writer of the Book of Job was crying Why do we never see God intervening And then in the fulness of time some people did see just this Such was the manner of God breaking through that those who recognized what was happening could never forget By His Advent they were changed Their world too now ours has borne ever since he marks of God coming History was cut in two STILL UNSHAKEN There is much about Jesus that remains a mystery much on which we cannot dogmatise But the things that really matter about Him still stand unshaken And there is only one verdict on Jesus Christ which holds together these inescapable elements and which ultimately makes sense It is that He was all that He said He was Like all else that Jesus said His words about Himself can be trusted This if we con take it in and if we dare is quite staggering in its implications It means that when we see the Man of Galilee we see God In a unique sense Jesus was fully indwelt and possessed by His Father Humbly and simply He was able to claim I and the Father are one We may have to think this over say it over again and again perhaps for a lifetime before we can hope fully to grasp what it means Have a Merry Christmas Once the Christmas presents are opened on Christmas day get rid of the wrappings as quickly as possible suggests Fire Prevention Bureau Apiteof wrappings fire hazard It Coroner Martin told he jury that the inquest revealed that the construction firm had cum tied 19 violations of the In duslrial Safety Act Strong and Drastic Action The consulting firm of Diamond and Myers this week recommended strong and drastic action to get rid of the neon and asphalt drive In strip along I Road in Bronte When residents were asked In a questionnaire earlier this fall What arc the desirable things about llron to the strip wjs the most common reply The consultants want to replace it th a pedestrian oriented com mercial centre with small town scale and vitality Policing Cost Climbs The cost of policing the town has gone from in 1972 to a new high or ISO Acton council learned last week The figure will probably be closer to when all expenses arc included Much of the Increase was attributed to a seven per cent increase in wages for personnel Tt 15 cents a mile cost of providing a police cruiser is another extra Despite the increased costs council passed the agreement bylaw for policing the town with seven members of the Ontario Provincial Police with little comment Ratepayers Have Second Thoughts faNFLCROVE Rural Ratepayers Association will soon announce a meeting of its members to discuss the proposed advisory groups of citizens In each ward in the township Although at first the CRRA liked the Idea a spokesman said they arc not too sure now The association is a five year old group with about members The president is Norm House and among its vice presidents are Doug Nell Armstrong Cyril Clark Moltershcad andAldoFcrri flic spokesman commented that the CRRA especially did not like the fact that although these advisory groups could tell the what to do the councillor still had a free vote and need not necessarily accept the group decision
