the Railway Bonus Fund and transferring the money therein to other uses and giving a short explanation as where the Railway Bonus Fund came from It Is with that explanation that I wish to take issue as one of the very few men now living who knows the story the Fund and as Treasurer of the Fund for years I think that I may speak with some Authority The Fund originated in 1872 when the now defunct Hamilton and North Western Railway Company applied for a bonus from the County of Hal ton for the privilege of having the railway line run through the County from South to North This bonus or grant was approved by the County but also had be approved by a vote of the Electors in the several municipalities through which the railway ran I Burlington parts of Nelson and Trafalgar Milton Georgetown and The vote was taken in and the Bonus was defeated but the then Reeve of Mr Wm Clay noticed that the electors in the northern part of the Township were in favor while those in the Iway southern part were the Bonus so he had a second vote token of those ratepayers owning pro pert in Lots to in Concession Ho and also Lots to in Concessions to II Thistlmc the vote carried and since it also corned in the other Municipalities the Count went ahead and by law passed on the da of 1B74 a grant of to the Hamilton and Northwestern Company and issued debentures therefor Today may seem like very small potatoes indeed but when jou con slder that at that time a skilled tradesman earned SO cents a day or less it makes ooo look like lot of money This also necessitated special rates in that portion of the Township known as the Railway Bonus group namely those properties in Lots to to inclusive in Concession 1 to and Lots 1 1 lo inclusive in Concessions to II of Town ship However there was a provision in the agreement with the Hamilton and North Western Railway Company I have always understood put there the insistence of John Warren Deputy Reeve of Esquesing that time that the Company must operate as an independent Company for a period of years or repay the amount of the Bonus with Interest Tho Hamilton ind North Western In dependent for I then sold out to the Trunk ind became the million branch of the Grand Trunk The Count of sued for the fulfillment of the contract and timing the suit to the Priv in London won the suit ind recovered the and interest less the legal incurred the The amount paid Fsqucsing Township with interest wis ii Nelson Township ihjoo ind bv Trafalgar Township with the other municipalities piving less than i of This less expenses when prorated gave EsquLsIng a return of This monc eould not be returned to those who hid it since some were and some had sold their properties and moved so the in their wisdom set up i Trust Fund to be known as THF BONIS FIND to be reinvested from time to time and the interest on the Fund to be prorated cording to the Roll of and paid over to the local School Trustees to reduce the school taxes on those properties in the Railway Bonus Group which had originally contributed for the and it is to note that not infrequently in some of the Sections that the General Sehool Rate with the Railway Bonus was or the expenses without a lew the Trustees it all jnd that situations prevailed through until the of i Township Board Of it still right up to the present that is that few interest hid iccumulatcd that it undo difference of I mill in the school rale between those Inch re w the llulwiv Bonus Group those which were tut It mav be of interest that there wis i ipprovcd law of the of Hilton Dee which ided for i bonus of to be paid to the and debentures ere issued and paid for for luvears but the Railwav was never built and the monev was used to build the Milton to rand I trust Mr Editor that some of older readers mav be interested in this iccount though I dan t expect to the irea to care one or the other Jtnssfneerelv It would be possible to segregate waste paper he said uuiiuita town Disposition
