with the theory that LIP or OFY type programs should be carried out by government In Its to create a favorable atmosphere for Ihe operation of a free enterprise system the government should be concerned about pockets of unemployment and should take steps to alleviate these situations One way chosen by present government of providing temporary assistance to high unem ployment areas Is the term make- work program such as LIP and OFY The with this approach Ihe past have been related to the administration of Ihe program which placed emphasis only on the fact that an applicant was unemployed Sometimes little or no attention was given to the use to which the funds were lo be put social value lo be derived by Ihe or whether project would be carried as indicated In the ap plication The translation of a basically sound I henry into practice was an abomination Well this year are told things are going to be dif ferent The criteria for awarding grants will include the applied to visitors to he new regional municipality of Halton HiTls Monday Tom Hill a region native climbed from his present post as reeve of Township to become the first mayor of the enlarged municipality under regional government The election did not produce too many surprises The voters generally went with experience and in all but very few instances remained with the persons who had served them before Georgetowns Mayor Bill Smith who had campaigned for the post of mayor of Halton Hills placed a very close second to mayorelect Hill A larger turnout of voters in Georgetown might have swung things tne Smith way although the Hill campaign did make substantial inroads into Smith territory Now that the election is out of the way the task of preparing for the official change to regional government begins is due to arrive Jan I Its rolling around as fast as the election did barely three months distant By going with experience the voters seem to have assured themselves that the transition will be as peaceful and as smooth as possible Or so they hope There will be problems to contend with the magnitude of the change assures that But the men elected to serve should be able to react to meet these problems head on If regional government is going to be suc cessful then our elected leaders are going to have to display a unity of wisdom of the likes of Solomon and occasionally the patience of Job The Game of the Name The name sounds a cross between a cemetery and a country club but Monday the voters in Georgetown and Acton decided in majority to name their new part of the region Hills The selection of a winner was more than votes more popular than the runnerup hills while it was the popular choice is a name that is firobably destined to remain in in a sort of obscurity born of taste but not of function Just as Cambridge has never been fully applied to the area of Gait Preston and Hespeler Halton Hills will never be widely accepted by Acton and Esquesing because its choice was decided by the larger population in Georgetown would have been a more logical name choice because it is part of the historical scene But all of this is water under the bridge isnt it A name has been picked Whatever reasons for the selection a large number of voters in the new municipality has spoken and Hills Is the winner Georgetown Acton and the host of smaller builtup areas that make up the new municipality will continue to remain There isnt going to be a great joining of the masses Postal addresses will continue to in corporate the little names and the people will never really forget where they live Hills is the appelation that will describe the region where we live Georgetown- Acton Glen Williams Stewarttown etc are still home Regional Police Notes Drivers Are Trained In Secondary Schools Back in I960 when the then Departments of Education and Transport began jointly to promote approved courses In driver Instruction In secondary schools there were only schools In On tario offering such a course Now there art schools offering students a chance to Icam to drive Teachers must be specially trained In a 3week driver education teacher preparation course held during the bummer and financially sponsored Jointly by Ihe Ontario Motor League and the Insurance Bureau of Canada In conjunction with the ministry of tran sportation and com munications who contribute administrative and teaching personnel The course has just been expended lo three weeks In length Instead of two A Canadian textbook Power Under Control last year replaced the American Sportsmanlike Driving and the curriculum guide manoeuvre sheets and test papers the ministry supplies nave all been keyed to new text who successfully completed a high school driver in struction
