THE HERALD Hone Newspaper of Georgetown Acton and Esquesing A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited 103 Main St South Georgetown L7G Ontario RICHARD CAMERON THF Thursday Jan Page MAN OF THE YEAR Hill Heads Halton Hills There s no official Man Of The Year contest in Halton Hills but if there were we would like to suggest that the title go to Tom Hill for Tom is the first mayor of this new municipality Hes the man who is going to be much in the news as the year progresses He snot the entire council of course but he is the chief magistrate of a municipal governing body that is starting off on year one It s going to be a busy year and a tough one and the task of being mayor will be hectic It will take a man with strong shoulders to survive and Tom is just such a man He has to help guide his council through a year of reorganization organization and preparation all operating under the mantle of a regional government that colossus of administration that is also in its beginning for Mayor Hill he adopted that title in full Jan 1 heads a council that serves a much larger area than his former home base of Esquesing Township Halton Hills is an amalgamation of the two former towns of Georgetown and Acton plus The new mayor begins his service knowing that his selection was popular in all three areas Yes it will be a big year a big year fop- accomplishment and probably a big year for problems Because it is a year of beginning one won come without the other Good luck to Tom and his council and if we might make just one request let the media remain informed about council and its conduct Time To Save Time One of the first items of business among many facing the new council of Halton Hills will be the question of daylight saving time Do we or don t we The issue is being created by the United States That nation has decided to turn to daylight saving time to help ease its energy crisis The period of change will come this month when clocks will be set ahead one hour The move as it does in summer will provide an extra hour of daylight in the evenings Ontario has been watching the United States situation with in terest but it is not yet clear if the province will follow suit automatically or leave decision to switch to daylight saving time to each individual municipality For the sake of uniformity the entire province should make the change as should every province in Canada There should be no need to be nettled by the U S move It makes more sense to alter the daylight hours in winter when evening falls about supper time than it does m summer when sunset lingers on until well into the evening Hills council should waste no time making a decision to adopt daylight saving time It is a moot question of course whether daylight saving time will save much energy They system was used during two world wars in Britain and North America ostensibly for the same reason It has never been recorded how much energy was saved then but saving was claimed for its beginning Daylight saving time now however makes sense simply for its realignment of daylight to the general trend of our lives which revolve around the nine hour day from to p Energy saved is a bonus Easy Credit Easy Doom A copy of the October report of the Peel Family Services bureau should be sent to every easy credit pusher in the country The easy credit advocates should shift uncomfortably their chairs at the realization that 32 new cases of families needing credit counselling were opened by the bureau during October Not only that of these families owe an average of and that s not including mortgages Perhaps we can all stand on the sidelines and tell ourselves that these people are simply being irresponsible but that is not the whole story The fact of the matter is that we have allowed these people to get themselves into debt far beyond their ability to ever see the light of day Are there no limitations on credit today Are we not aware of the effect such practices have on individuals and on society as a whole Firstofall the fact that people are seeking the help of a social service agency is good indication that are suffering That only part of the tale Such agencies tell us that the root of most marital difficulties is in finances The easy money game is destroying society and our economy Suddenly everyone READERS FORUM wants what the fellow next to him has No matter that the fellow next door has worked years longer to acquire his fine house and good car we all want the same thing without the effort or responsibility As a matter of fact we would be willing to bet that more credit is extended on a per capita basis today in any given period than the average person earns in the same If anything is destroying our economy it is this fact that we are producing and selling goods at an enormous rate to consumers who worth a cent in real monetary value We are in complete sympathy with the merchant or the manufacturer caught in this spiral we must produce more to offset rising costs and costs rise because we produce more The chain has to be broken somewhere and we suggest if it was broken at the point where we said no to those obviously unable to afford luxury items on credit this step would make more sense than any wage or price freeze Credit is obviously a necessary part of our lues today but it has never been worked into an exact science which specifies who may or may not have credit at a specific time Brampton Times Resident Likes Article Dear Sir This letter will confirm my congratulations to Gordon Green for his Interesting article re THE LAST DAYS I too firmly believe we arc indeed living in hose last days by reason of world events which parallel the signs given to us by our Lord in Matthew Luke I was a little apprehensive at depend on the selective me herbicides but there hove been problems in their safe use In sonic cases they have to be used at such high rates to control weeds that the crops arc or killed Research scientists at the Ontario Agricultural College have been studying his problem in order to find a selective antidote or be used safely a herbicide Working with and i chemical known as J- Chang and J Bin deen of the Department of Crop Science and G It Stephenson of En have found he chemical when added prior to seeding is i seed coaling or mixed with herbicide reduces I- PTC damage in susceptible crops The primary ad vantage of the antidote is that it removes the danger of herbicide injury and proves the effectiveness of herbicides savs Professor Ban dec In growth studies with corn sorghum winter rape turnip white beans and our weed species green foxtail lamb and rtdroot pigweed rates of PTC were applied both with and QUEEN S PARK without the protection or Corn the experiment was injured by all rates of 1- PTC but when used in conjunction with 25788 the symptoms were reduced or did not appear With the addition of the chemical herbicide injury was also reduced In sorghum Winter rape turnip and white beans were more tolerant to EPTC although severe damage did occur R showed no protective effect in these species The studies ilso showed that the did not reduce the effectiveness of EPTC on weeds Research is continuing but results so far indicate that herbicide antidotes may expand the use of herbicides on difficult weeds Higher rales may be used control semi weeds without gambling on crop injury The antidote will prevent crop injury with as well as with Eptam In 1973 some damage was found in fields using Sutan Trade names for the products containing the antidote will be plus and plus antidote All new Sutan plus slocks for 1974 will contain the antidote to prevent corn injury by this herbicide Criticism Helpful Its Freely Given TORONTO this time of good cheer a word for those manv critics who have sent ilong their feelings over he I It be sold that no matter whether they ire opposed they are predated they are valuable lor none of has omnipotence and writer certainly knows it We all can learn from each other and pro and con discourse is one of he great srtnghs of our system By for the greatest number of critics have been from he world of education Tcichers have not taken kindly o many of my remirks To this profession I would soy this time that the comment I have made has hopefully been from a detached viewpoint in the sense at least that any of us can be really detached Perhaps I have been wrong Many teachers have written to say hat their two months off really is not a vacation but Is spent following university courses or other improvement programs Or that their professional development days year arc compulsory This may be so But on my persona observation and experience It Bui if it really some convincing evidence would be welcome For the teaching world is made up of many fine people But I do believe it has built a reputation as a very self centered and selfish group And if I am wrong and have been incorrectly In pre ting for you then by all means give me the am munition to correct it Then there are the other people some of whom have pointed out errors which have been corrected and others who themselves have been in error In this latter group there are hose who have objected o favorable comment I have made on the Increase in indemnities for members These people rage at what they declare to be 10 per cent to per cent boosts In pay voted for themselves by the members They Ignore that this la the first raise these members have had in six years And if properly prorated In creases would be from one and a half per cent to a bit better than three per cent Let me only say that it is humanly impossible to be completely knowledgeable and fair When I am not I ap preciate hearing about It as much as any incidental compliments that may come along And happy holiday
