THE HERALD Home Newspaper of Hills A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Main St South Ontario RICHARD CAMERON THE HERALD Wednesday April 16X4 Page ITS LACKING A Sense Of Oneness If a sense of unity to be developed in Hills then perhaps that unity can be development itself Theres plenty of room bet ween Aeton and Georgetown for development to take place That would unite those two former communities as well as the township of Esquesing which generally was considered a municipality between the two All three areas now are what make up Halton Hills It will take years to develop a sense of community oneness under the present setup of division In fact as long as two separate regions of population go to make up one municipality here will always be reason tor division This is the parochialism that planners hoped would be avoided or tempered but which sometimes seems to be fostered Throw open the land between Georgetown and Acton to development Let what once were two separate entities grow to form one community that can be joined bodily as well as in spirit Until that happens Halton Hills will remain an only something to write on stationery but something which even yet is not so much as con a postal address And Wonder Of Wonders This year the Canadian Cancer Society volunteers will be on the streets canvassing homes and businesses to raise the national goal of 8 million Local volun in Georgetown and district will be going door to door to raise Cancer knows no clas distinction no age barrier no religious beliefs And yet cancer can be beaten Early diagnosis of cancer symptoms can dead to quick and effective treatment in turn leading to extended years of healthy and productive life One of the most compelling examples of cancer and its effects is the highly publicized case of Teddy Kennedy Here we have a young boy son of a handsome wealthy and influential father who had his leg amputated due to bone cancer If Teddy had stolen a car or been jailed for drugs the public would chalk it up to a spoiled brat falling into idle ways But the seeming heartbreak of a leg am putation is something else again The publics heart goes out to the youngster hoping against hope that the plucky youngster will through And wonder of wonders scant weeks since his operation the national papers run pictures of the young Kennedy on the Colorado ski slopes and hes skiing The fact that this boy is skiing is a wonder The fact that he is skiing so soon after his operation is something akin to a miracle So when a Cancer Society volunteer knocks on your door give the miracle of health And think of young Kennedy The Rights Of Spring There is a sharpness in the air these days Brought along with the warming chinook winds this sharpness mingles with the sunlight and crisp bracing air to produce springtime Should you be insensitive to this change in air pressure you will no doubt see he more physical signs of spring about you Pathetic dirty snowbanks are ignored because it is spring The welfare boys come out and stand on the streets after a winter of slouching indoors People are heard to call out to one another where once scant weeks before they passed each other by separated by icy winds and slushy feet The birds heretofore objects of compassion and sympathy on icy seed trays become smug and stmt about the brown lawns Young boys and dogs for they think alike begin frequenting rivers and puddles handiest The town toughs still in denim jackets from winter lean menacingly against buildings in the late af ternoon and speculate on whose car will be used to cruise Street later that evening The sale of paint and moth balls is noticed to increase sharply The businessmen contemplate their front lawns on Saturday mornings and think about cleaning them up tomorrow And with all this activity going on the crisp bracing air swirls about us all The rites of spring are now People Swallow Anything Canadians must be getting adjusted to taxes tax forms and complications Last year a great degree of outrage and an awful lot of confusion greeted new income tax forms And last year about this time Ottawa had received just 2 million individual returns This year million returns have been filed already mostly from people who expect refunds And what of protests Nary a one It seems that people can get used to anything Which speaks well for the leaders of Halton Hills and regional government A budget has to be brought down for the new municipality and with all the hopes and fears that go with regionally and expected increases in costs any shock likely is to be tempered with a sigh of apathy ECHOES FROM THE PAST 10 YEARS AGO Junior aimers swept oil the awards at the annual Junior Farmer drama estiva held In Milton District High School the usual coherent unified lucid examination of a single topic Im going to aim in all directions at once and pull both triggers Reason is I ve got to get ready to go to German on Sunday and have a lot to do Like shine my and change whatever the and get my wife to iron some shirts and oh get her to pock my bag and well a lot of important things First of all Ive rediscovered a maxim that wos already ancient when Moses looked out over the promised land women ore not only unprediclablc but unreasonable My wife had known for about a month that I might be going to Germany on the winter break She thought was great for me Itll be a nice change for you And itll do you good to get away from me for a few days You must get sick of me POLITE LIE I lied Told her change that could scarcely bear the thought or being separated ana that the very idea of being sick of her was nauseating QUEENS PARK Then I came home one day and told her it was all set but that she couldnt go When she queried knowing it would be several months off and that there might be an earthquake or a flood or something in the meantime Oh I guess Sunday night I responded casually serene in the knowledge that she was in favor of the trip She burst into tears My next topic also deals with the family and with an aqueous event Aside from a rainstorm have you every been soaked from a great height I have Last Sun- I was thoroughly enjoying Flaying with my grandson old enough now to be played with without fear that hell break I had him under the armpits and was hoisting him in the air making those ridiculous sounds that would make grandfather blush crimson if they ever heard them on tape PURE GLEE A look of pure glee passed across the kids face and I thought By golly he knows me and hes enjoying his grandad Next second 1 was soaked from shoulder to knee It was warm and at Queens Deligate Enjoyed Position Queens Park Bureau Of The Herald TORONTO Many fine men acted as the representative of the monarchy In Ontario But there can be few who have enjoyed the great respect and admiration which has been given to Lieutenant Governor Ross Mac dona Id As he leaves office this year old Branlford lawyer lakes with him not only the respect but the affection of the thousands of people he has so graciously hosted or visited in his nearly six years in office Perhaps the most im orient reason for Mr success has been that he obviously has enjoyed his Job This has been very evident at the continuous round of social functions which he has been host The person having the best fun at these always appeared to be Mr Mac dona Id himself He always gay charming and appearing to be having a great time He has been a most en speaker with normally a few light touches to set a tone of fun yet also always with dignity UNIQUE DINNER The respect In which Mr was held was demonstrated when the government held a dinner to honor him at the Ontario Science Centre There was an attendance of more than 400 Including some of the most prominent people in the province And there was an at mospherc one doesnt too find There was one could feel this was not a got it party at but a group ration for a It occasion Incidentally Premier Davis showed thought fulness In arranging that two heads of Mr should be sculpted One is to be placed in the high school named after him In And the second will be displayed in the parliament buildings This is a new honor It has not been done for any previous lieutenant governor But it is a very fitting one For in this man Ontario has enjoyed the finest of public servants Beef Heifer Replacements by starting them calving at two years of age according to on Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food source It E Macartnej a beef cattle specialist says that by aiming to calve replacement heifers at two years farmers can produce an extra 330 pounds of calf during the lifetime of the cow thus helping to reduce the high costs of feed labor and In vestment However to reach this goal replacement heifers require proper feed and management he points out A heifers nutrient requirements are greatest during lactation because she has to maintain her con nurse calf recover rom breeding recycle re breed and continue to grow Top quality hay grain supplements minerals and vitamins arc necessary to maintain production and still continue growing The size of heifer at breeding is important than age the first winter a heifer should gain one to one and a half pounds Persons Sexual Mores Decided Before Grade 2 Sir I would have really liked to have attended the and reulon renaissance rally which was being held In Milton High school on March fortunately another my living as to be given priority Is my contention that those who are making the most noise this subject are like those who make the most noise on he censorship Issue they are making a platform for their own inadequacies and hang Quality Of Life Is Leading Role first I thought Id hurst a blood vessel But it was the wrong color Its not unpleasant at first Rather like taking a warm salt bath with your clothes on It a when it begins to Theres not much more to be developed there so Ill turn to topic three exams which we have Just gone through a session of Nothing Is more depressing than starting to mark a set of exam papers and finding that the first five you mark are failures You arc filled with selfdoubt Have I not taught them anything Im a failure as a teacher I go back to the shoe factory If everybody falls Ill fired because in this system if youre teaching failures you re a failure as a teacher regardless of any other factors Then you pick up a paper and the student has un what you ve taught and applied it end used some brains of Its own and its a ninety percenter Hallelujah And youre hooked for another year SUPERVISION There ia only one thing worse than marking exam papers That is supervising the writing of them The quaint old word for this function is invigilating It shounda kind of dirty but it isnt Just utterly boring You are figuratively locked in a room for two hours with about teenagers That alone is a fate worse than death for some people Personally Id rather be locked in with 35 students than with 35 balloons Then begins two hours of hell The kids are supposed to be tense nervous straining every brain cell o do well Theyre about as tense as a hibernating bear Susie takes off her shoes assumes a yoga position and looks out the window Jacks crutch a relic of skiing and a broken leg falls on the floor and you jump a foot while the victims snicker You resort after the first hour to such things as counting greasy hair versus washed hair bras versus big clumsy boots versus sneakers You look up flt tht picture on the wall of the Queen on whom somebody has drawn a moustache You fill In with your Imagination sideburns and realize the Queen would have been pretty dashing In 1580 SUSPICION You look out the window the dirty snow banks and dream of a beach or a trout stream You whip around aware you were drifting to see if anyone is cheating Nobody is Except Joe who has given up after half an hour of tongue and pen working together and is sound asleep head on arms An early fly buzzes Warned you this woud he a shotgun column But I think Ive covered everything on home front Next despatch will be from Germany promise it will be loaded with putsches and other Teutonic goodies Lets sec now If I remember my Was maken vll hur 1st rauchen bevor der lch bin krleggefangonner Wo die Reckon Ill get along The real estate Industry has a leading role to play in improving the quality of urban life by helping cities become more attractive and pleasant places in which to work and live W Gardiner deputy chairman of the Royal Bank or Canada says Mr Gardiner told the Investment Commercial and Industrial Division of the taronto Real Estate Board that circumstances have placed the industry in a position to influence the shape of things to come in our cities Real estate men have Ihe expertise in assembling land and if the current ideas of the urban planners and thinkers are to be applied in a workable fashion to the resolution of urban problems the industrys practical experience In land use can make a tremendous contribution Without land Mr Gardiner said new developments cannot come into being Mr Gardiner said the Royal Bank is under in creasing pressure to keep pace with public demand and community expansion by providing banking service He saw two major challenges improving personal banking services and acquiring funds A successful response to both those problems depends heavily on having an ex tensive and efficient branch network The Royal Bank with nearly branches in Ontario now will be in turning to the real estate industry in planning the future expansion of the branch network Mr Gar diner said ACCEPTANCE One of the criteria in planning new facilities will be their acceptance in terms of the communitys wishes to retain a traditional identity or individual appearance This local input Is apparent in both small communities and big cities In the case of the Royal Bonk Plaza now under construction at Bay and Front Streets in Toronto the bank decided we were going to have to resist the blandishments of height and emphasize architectural distinction instead The resulting design two triangular towers of and 26 floors bracketing a 130foot high banking hall was one the bank felt would be warm vibrant and eye pleasing Mr Gardiner said Many see in it a similarity to the torcnto City Hall consisting as it does of two towers of unequal height joined at the bottom by an unusual hall However where City Hall faces in the towers of the Plaza face out Where City Hall mokes extensive exterior use of concrete ihe Plaza will use bronze glass which will change color and mood with the seasons In the actual construction the Bank revived the concept of the Master Builder Mr Gardiner said It is a more sophisticated one than existed in medieval times but the principle remains he same The Bank engaged Properties Limited as an expert who has no direct financial interest in the project to orchestrate for a fee the activities of the other professionals involved with he creation of the owners new home Mr the bank has also engaged A Ltd who originally assembled the site or the Royal Bank Plaza to act as leasing agents for the Plazas 1 million square feet of office space The will be ready for occupancy in he autumn of 1976 Snowmobile Era Ends Tough Laws Coming A snowmobile era will end with the current season in Ontario There is every Indication that will have to live with new and more restrictive legislation in the winter of 1974 The Ontario Safety League predates the strong support of these changes given by industry and the snowmobile clubs The Ontario Snowmobile Distributors Association representing he industry in his province has worked uncompromisingly to promote safety and more realistic snowmobile legislation in Ontario New and expanded programs for next season were announced at a recent meeting of the Association The League heartily en dorses OSDAs plan to conduct snowmobile operator training programs in secondary schools in cooperation local principals and teachers In an effort to reach greater numbers of the public a series of super snowmobile shows in major snowmobile centers will replace the local safety clinics previously operated by OSDA En and top show personalities will make these presentations an en snowmobile ex Of major importance relative to impending restriction of snowmobile road use is he Associations plan to promote greatly expanded snowmobile traifs through co operation of snowmobile clubs with active support and planning from the Ontario government Bible Verse call heaven and to record this day against you hall have set before you life and blessing and cursing therefore choose life that both and thy seed may live Deuteronomy 30 19 God has made us a people of choice It is up to us to make ho right one Choose ye his day whom ye will serve Letters of marque were licenses to fit out armed vessels and employ them in the capture of on enemys chant shipping The subject matter regardless of the other red herrings such as parent participation taxpayers rights etc etc which are being used to obscure the fact that four homosexuals appearing in a student forum at the school roused moral indignation and started this whole furor I personally and many people I have talked to would rather have their children meet homosexuals at the school In the classroom where they can observe them clinically rather than be exposed to them at camps in the work force or socially knowing nothing of this fact of life I speak with some ex perience on the Jubject Having joined he British army at he age of 16 one before WW and having had little or no sex education I was amazed to find wo of he male cooks ere called and Clara and I and other young soldiers joined in he fun of baiting these unfortunate people as they minced about duties but we soon learned that homosexuals didnt have to mince about or act effeminate Prize fighters truck drivers and lumberjacks etc can also have homosexual tendencies but more important learned something else A persons sexual mores are formed at early puberty What you are and what you are going be Is decided long before Grade fur thermore we observed that when we arrived at a new town or port It was the same old races that lined up in the brothel queues the dens of deviation or the beer oarlora according to their tastes We discussed this fact many times and we came to the conclusion that a lot depended on ones home life and upbringing Those of us who had been brought up properly had more respect for our per sons ana the persons of others lhan to run around acting like morons If I had the power to change the curriculum our sex education in our schools I would make one change and one change only and that is that after teaching the mechanics of sex I would try to instill into students that sex is a very beautiful and emotional experience not be parleyed with lightly William
