Sunday evening various sitters spent four hour terms on a wooden platform feet above the ground School Closing Is Seed Of Destruction For Community Dear Sir When I attended high school several years ago I wrote a speech on Norvaf a small of 300 nestled among the banks of the Credit river How very different my speech would be today Now I am not sure if I live In Hills Georgetown or is It Halton County or perhaps township Today the Credit river is polluted and so is a good per centage of our drinking water but before any thing can be done about our polluted drinking water a study must be done by whom I am not sureand could take up to two years Meanwhile we drink polluted water June 21 was a sad day for a few village residents thanks to regional school board Our little three room school closed Its doors to our children Come September Instead of riding a bike or walking to school students will now catch a bus to several different schools splitting our village even more What becomes of our school now We would like to have the use of at least part of It for a community centre but our regional school board wont say Will our children have a playground now or will they have to hit chhike to Georgetown for en tertainment As If the closing of our school wasnt a slap In the face before the doors were even locked our Regional school board made arrangements to have the old school bell removed from Calm on the front lawn of the school for safe keeping they said The womens In had that cairn built as a Centennial project and the stones were collected from local farms local men removed the bell from the old school and a local man spent many long hours building the calm The man who built the calm waa my late father Fred These are third and fourth generation children of the people who first attended Norval school Mark Cun ningham Dwayne Cun ningham Karen Cun Marilu Davis Derek and Robert Reed Joanne Hunter who was not present for this photograph is a fourth generation Norval student Fendley and I was among the first students to attend school when it opened in My daughter left that school for the last time on Friday and we are all proud of that cairn as it is certainly a personal memorial to us of her grand father What right do a bunch of men sitting on their butts In an office have to destroy a community Today my five year old daughter asked why she couldnt ride her bicycle to school next year Could a member of the regional school board please answer that for her because- 1 certainly cant give her a good explanation This year students collected sap right In their own school yard and they had pancakes and maple syrup that they had made themselves They went on a trip to the sugar bush and saw syrup being made in larger quantities Can they make maple syrup at George Kennedy school of course not- there are no maple trees to tap During the course of a year at school the parents could develop a personal relationship with the teachers but at George Kennedy I only saw the teachers at Interview time and at open house Unless I had time to be a Parent Volunteer Bus children cant stay or extra help after school or or extra activities as they would have no way home If you live In country you would expect to have your children bused to school but in a village on a main highway with a school and room to add on How ridiculous can some people get After having my daughter in an open concept kin dergarten class or a year I can only hope that the wise men on the board of education dont have any offspring attending this type of school system as I feel that our country will be In a terrible state If these children are the adults of tomorrow I realize that In this free and democratic country of ours we cant fight the system but cant people start respecting the feelings and concerns of other people before destroying a community truly DtanneL Taylor Halton Council Views Budget Regional Councillors had a chance to look at the first draft
