EDUCATIONAL SECULARISM BIG BROTHERS HERALD Wednesday July Private Schools Are Required To Support Spiritual Values One Man One Boy Help For The Fa This Is the third final article by Ken Campbell of Milton telling why he refutes to support by property taxes the present totalitarian which dominates the public educational system in Hal ton and Ontario Mr Campbell Is known for bis association with the Renaissance Corn s Let us now take a look at another aspect of our schools Pornography crimes of violence drugtaking alcoholism and the growing suicide rate among young people are only symptoms of a deeper sickness in the modern soul says Viktor one of the worlds foremost psychiatrists Prankl professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Vienna told a standing room crowd of 3 at Hall that despair over is the source of most of societys present ills the doctor ac cused many modern educators of reenforcing the meaningless felt by youth and of their enthusiasm because they hold forth a view of man which reduces him to the level of nothing but an animal What has dragged our society down According to Arthur Lower professor emeritus of History Queen University Principally we lost our faith the permissive society has killed or grievously wounded the orderly society To do the deed it has had the assistance of a vast number of clever quacks Among them I give a leading place to the educational quacks com fortably dug into departments of education all over the country LOSS OP MORALITY Prank S M or ley concurs with Dr Lowers The loss of morality is the consequence of the loss of religious faith Morality survive without faith Drug addiction is directly traceable to the loss of religion It is notable that the Death of God theology has a close relation ship to the soft is ultimately no Currently the only morality society has exists on the bank account of inherited faith E Rosenberg warns that contemporary societies are deeply in trouble In meeting the challenge of collective seems clear that the free society suffers from an inability to harness its unique blessing freedom to a self- liberating force that would link the individual to a communal goal The mancentered democracy of desire based on Individuals striving to fulfill their per desires and ambitions must be replaced by a democracy of worth if freedom is to prevail suggests one brilliant analyst DEMOCRACY DESIRE The democracy of desire he writes is the dominant conception of democracy today that is the prevalent view in every sphere of life It Is assumed that the gift of democracy is the emancipation of man from all higher powers so that he might at last building according to his hearts desire the world of which he thinks he is now the master Toronto Star In an editorial entitled Civilized the Winnipeg Free Press noted Long ago however it was recognized that civilization must be protected byanelementofrestralntorwe would no longer have civilization but anarchy Permissiveness run rampant ails to take into account the necessary safeguards for society Permissiveness has led to an increasingly high rate of crime crime to a disregard for law and order and a breakdown of the ifeguards that law abiding citizens have the right to ex It has revealed itself In student disturbances at universities in a breakdown of fiubllc and private morality in ncreased dope addiction and to a situation in which the permissive society has become not only the violent society but is in danger of becoming the sick society According to Dr A Gallop head of the food science department at the University of Manitoba physical biological and chemical pollution are incidental to the far more serious threat of mental and oral pollution Mankind he said has tried to defy the ab solutes of God and of life by destroying the environment and is suffering most from the notion hat what is current is best He cited abortion as an example of moral pollution of thehlghestdegree According to Gallop moral pollution will ruin mankind far sooner than will environmental pollution NO RETURN Man may have passed the point of no return in the management of his own affairs because he has put his own will ahead of the will of the Creator As Lord Russell warned shortly before his death three or four years ago I doubt if mankind wilt survive to the year because on the one hand we are In giants while on the other hand we are moral pygmies Finally that salty British commentator Malcolm Muggerldge describes western civilization as sinking under a wave of mindless and amoral pleasure seeking Of current trends in sexual morality Muggerldge says these evils are the result of an anti- Christian humanism that has discredited itself by sliding Into a standard ess drooling Instead of seeking to play the worlds game Christianity must hold uncompromisingly to Its traditional doctrines and moral beliefs Gibbering clerics and swinging theologians he says have undermined the Christian presence which the world so desperately needs sees groups of orthodox zealots an the only hope for the preservation of human decency the face of this imminent threat to the survival of the great values of our civilization and of the human race as a father neighbor Canadian citizen and as a follower of Jesus Christ 1 find myself constrained In the exercise of a good conscience to resist with the Jeopardy of my property licitv and even life itself the domination of monolithic secularism in our public educational system I refuse to bow down to the gods of materialism as wor shipped in the new state religion of secularism now being forced upon us in our public educational system The civil rights of the significant minority who hold un compromisingly to Gods right to be God in His Universe arc being systematically violated by this antiChristian Godless philosophy now dominating society and our educational system Until the tyranny of this state religion in public education is broken I will not voluntarily support the system by another cenl of my properly taxes Proposals for liberating the System As a liberating solution to the basic tensions created by the all pervasiveness of secular materialism in our public educational system I propose the following 1 That there be a respect genuinely demonstrated by the public school system for the moral aesthetic and religious convictions of that significant minority in our predominantly secular society committed uncompromisingly to the world view That we permit parents who cannot conscientiously support the secularism dominant in the public educational system to direct their property taxes to private schools committed to Christian spiritual values where they choose lo send their children That we Include such schools as part of the public educational system allowing parents regardless of their religious views to choose without social or economic penalty to send their children either to the school committed to secular materialism or values This would produce a genuinely pluralistic public educational system best able to serve a pluralistic society Such a pluralistic educational system would contribute dynamically lo a liberated responsible society where respect for genuine Individual differences would characterize an orderly truly civilized people Somewhere in your neigh borhood there is a boy who needs a man You
