Paget THE HERALD Wednetday July it HALTON HILLS SPORTS World Cup Confusion By the time you read thta you will probably know who has reached the final of the World Cup that assuming that you are still interested enough In the tournament to care and haven t thrown your hands up in the sir in an exclamation of total frustration and disbelief as you tried to figure Just what was going on What the World Cup may lack In excitement action and spectacle it certainly makes up for with complexity It seems that the team with the best computer stands the best chance of winning For Instance I can imagine manager of say Brazil talking to his players If East Germany loses to the Netherlands by more than tuooools then we 11 only have to draw against East Germany to reach the final providing of course that the Netherlands beat Argentina by only one goal or words to that effect It was rumoured that Haiti was employing a star gazer to predict the results of the other teams and thus estimate Haiti chances of qualifying Whatever Happened to the good old days when one team in any sport proved its superiority over another team by beating them on the field I don t think I can to mind any other com petition where the qualifying process is so confused and com plicated The reason for the complexity Is conversely quite straight forward The more games played in the tournament the more money that is taken at the gates A supporter of a finalist in the World Cup will if he wanted to see every game have had to watch his team play six games plus the final Tickets for the semi finals are now retailingataround on the black market Prices for the final will bo astronomical The whole World to me to be a ripoff It used to be a wellorganized tournament designed to produce the best soccer In the world from the best soccer countries in the world Now it more like the World Fair thana soccer tournament The end result is that a new brand of soccer teams has emerged Teams with welldisciplined squads colorless but efficient players and computerbrained managers have beaten the glory teams of yore Poland the Netherlands East Germany and Yugoslavia have shown what efficiency means by beating the likes of Italy West Germany and in the preliminary rounds Portugal England and Spain The Latin American brand of soccer that once ruled the soccer world has now with the exception of Brazil all but disappeared This may sound like sour grapes but I lament the passing of the colorful teams like Brazil in the sixties Hungary in the fifties and Italy in the forties If I ever master the mini calculators In the office I might be able to predict the dominant country of the seventies HALTON PEEL LEAGUE Chinguacousy Hit Georgetown HOUSE LEAGUE PITCHERS These two Intermediate house league Brampton defender Peter booted the ball back toward the goat and Kirk was there to send it high Into the net Kevin Frank the goalkeeper of Georgetown registered his fifth shutout in a row Well done MINOR MOSQUITO Georgetown This had to be Georgetown best game so far this season They gave Oakville very few scoring chances and kept the ball for most of the game In their opponents end of the field The first half had the team on the defensive while Georgetown kept up a steady attack and was even tually rewarded with a goal by Mark Rose The second half saw Oal tire fast and Georgetown took every lapse in their action to shoot on goal and were rewarded with goals from Andrew Debeer and John Clare and a second goal of the game for Mark Rose the latter two having an excellent game and controlling all the plays down the center of the field John Vanderburg and Glen also had good games and Benny Becket on left wing had his best game of the current campaign BANTAM Georgetown Burlington
