Wednesday July 1974 SMOKING The Hazard To The Young Travelling in buses trains and planes is more comfortable for nonsmokers Taking the Go train that operates between Georgetown and Toronto illustrates this point Fewer adults seem to be puffing away and those who do by and large dont seem to smoke as often Health statistics tend to lend weight to this aboutface Fewer and fewer adults are smoking more and most are smoking less The rate of quitting actually is going up even as the population rises But if that situation gives rise to sighs of thankfulness especially among nonsmokers dont breath easily too soon Young people seem to be taking up the slack in the habit Somehow the message about the inherent dangers of smoking has been successfully aimed at adults and has gone right over the heads of the young Watch a group of young people teenagers even preteens At least one in any group of five or so will be smoking another will probably light up as the first finishes Watch their purchases such as in restaurants where a coke and chips cornea with a package of smokes Its an ominous trend The very dangers that have been spelled out to us older folk arent making much of an impression on the young who should be more con cerned about the ravages of health than they are And lets get in an aside here at those smokers who declare that their habit really isnt unhealthy Theres no way a burning ember can be stuck into your mouth without some harm being done No one could survive breathing deeply inside a burning house The con tagion is lesser and takes longer from smoking tobacco but its there Lets reassess our message to the young and see if they cant follow an improved adult example A Big Bang Out Of Life Build your own Abomb Theres much todo today about availability of information that could permit an above- average to put together a homemade nuclear bomb Ac cording to scientists a lot of the information needed to build such a bomb already is available chiefly through United States declassified booklets from the Second World War Manhattan Project which gave rise to the bombs that burst over Japan Getting your hands on the necessary fissionable material which releases the terrific energy of a nuclear device may not be too difficult in the near future In creases in nuclear technology and development mean that much more material has to be made available and some could be spirited off for backyard projects Still the whole situation seems very Bondesque Something that seems to easy probably is fraught with imponderables that would make homemade nuclear bombs Impossible or impractical For instance why to such lengths to produce a homemade device if one slip could destroy yourself along with a city block or even a city Producing a con ventional bomb from dynamite or plastic explosive offers more personal safety unless a big mistake is made and can exact revenge or destruction or institute a feeling of power only slightly less in magnitude If homemade nuclear bombs do become a reality then we can say goodbye to the spite fence A nicelittle nuclear charge carefully controlled and computed could put your neighbor and his yard into orbit with no more than a nasty little bit of fallout In that event maybe we had better reinstitute those basement fallout shelters of the late 1950s Getting It All Off Sunday is MNWP Day at Freelton not very far from Hills MNWP is the Miss Nude World Pageant and so far no word has reached us that any lovely of Halton Hills is going to be a par ticipant Last year there was quite a large contingent of Georgetown before it became part of Halton Hills residents at the civic holiday weekend show but no particpants either This year the show is being held a week earlier We expect another sizeable crowd will be on hand but isnt it disturbing that no local entrants are recorded There will be contestants from several Ontario centres organizers of the pageant report plus many from Quebec and from out of the country coming from California Florida New York and Pennsylvania In fact largest contingent likely willbe from the United States with the odds therefore favoring an American winner Perhaps there is a feeling of embarrassment to be associated with a pageant so close to home that is based on nudism Nudism of course is not embarrassing and the pageant is a carefully con trolled affair that promotes family attendance Still old hangups die hard Its just conceivalbe that Halton Hills would not be represented at the Garden of Eden either before the apple tree blossomed Oh well Twelveyearold Georgetown entrepreneur Kelly Harrington of Main Street found prime location on Main Street for her Koolade booth at the sidewalk sale VIEWPOINT Study Of The Outdoors At Conservation Areas We arc so very fortunate living In the Peel Halton region where we have so many scenic conservation areas and parklands available to us We were out recently to the Mountsberg Wildlife Centre and Game Farm It has 1300 acres of woodlands marshes and nature trails One of the two watch towers we climbed was located at the end of a delightful walk through a meadow that was in full bloom nod bordered on one side by the lake The lookout gives a beautiful panorama of the lake below and one of the told us that It presents the most magnificent display In the fall as hundreds of waterfowl swoop down for a stopover on their migration south One of the things I found most enjoyable were the animals that wandered at will I watched one little girl froilck gleefully with a baby goat The wee goat her everywhere and it was hard to tell which kid was having more fun ANIMALS We like to have the animals as close to the misters as ooulble said Garry a biologist at the centre Wo want to give the youngsters a close experience with the animals but we try to discourage excessive han dling especially with the smaller animals such as the baby rabbits Some of the youngsters get over enthused and sometimes inad vertently the animals are injured r Mountsberg is primarily a teaching centre far both students and the public Last year the centre saw more than students In the various wildlife programs This year we are expecting for the season said Gary Each week during the Summerfest program they are showing different nature films and demonstrations Coming up will be demon- stratlonsandfllmson birds of prey weather canoeing and how to handle your canoe and farm days with old fashion farm techniques to mention only a few At present we are working on a new animal enclosure which we nope to have ready In the fall It will be to 60 acres and will be home of buffalo elk and white toil deer said Gary en thusiastically Out on the lake we watched a flock of Canada geese which we were told stay all year round and could number two hundred Scattered here and there were mixed flocks of wild and farm geese that honked their way about quite Im pervious to visitors It was quite comical to watch the adults side step the marching geese honking their right of way quite indignantly TOUR BARN You are invited to tour through the large bam at will to sec more animals and to watch the hundreds of baby birds under the incubators The roosters that parade around the barn crow up a storm Just to let you know they arc there Outside In cages are a variety of Ontario wildlife which seemed to fascinate the youngsters 1 watched They stared and stared at the great horned owl and the large bird was almost as big as the little guy that was trying to stare him down There la also a building housing aquariums with various specimens that would be found In Ontario streams They also had other displays In that building such as the bee colony The live bees enter on the outside of the building into an enclosed glass case so you can actually Bee the bees at work within the hive Gary spoke of nay rides and sleigh rides that are a regular part of the program They are discontinued only In the very hot part of the summer for the benefit of the horses and run regularly once the cooler weather returns SWEEPERS The summer staff I spoke with who arc part of the SWEEP program students working In an environmental enhancement program and the regulars like Gary arc all very friendly and en thusiastic and more than glad to any enquiries you might have Fishing and canoeing are available but no swimming The picnic facilities are a new little sparse facilities are being made available The present program at Mountsherg has been in operation for only one year so Its a great place to Lake the family and beat the crowds and the admission is only Mountsberg Is located lust this side of and there are many sign posts In the area to point the way At present there are not any concession stands so pack a picnic lunch and make a day of It Our family really enjoyed It and plan to make it a regular happening we hope you do to READERS FORUM Last week faithful readers if there are any left followed the enthralling It not appalling account of my meteoric career In the financial world I had suggested that I felt was being caught in the middle of a great financial squeeze when someone of fered to buy me stock at a share I something pecullai and promised Id try to get the bottom of it I havent but I hate to part with those shares of Peel- Elder Ive had them at long as Ive had my wife They are all thats left of my second and final savage attack on the stock market My first was rather deflating as mentioned last week NO CHANCES But the second time around I didnt take any chances It was only when a trusted stockbroker told me Mines wan going to be the hottest thing on the market that I carefully bought 1000 snares They cost me The broker was a former prisonerofwar so could be trusted implicitly The stock held firm went up about five cents a share in a week and this time there actually was a producing gold mine I reckoned I was in Biscuit City as we say In these parts What nobody told me was that there was more in grave than there was in gold in days and for many veers to come I should have bought a gravel pit I have previously related how that shares of has shrunk to shares of peelElder so I wont bore you But did learn one of the inevitable or so It seems to me laws of stocks Every time a company gets bigger I have ewer stocks expanded became known as Elder with a lot of new capital and great prospects in the offing 1 was told that for my 1000 shares of that cheap little old I would get 110 shares of this tremendous new Elder Did You Know The original name of Columbia University was Kings College Scientists say that there Is more aluminum yielded by the earth than any other metal NO MONEY There was no money in gold mining apparently bo Elder became PeelElder and got heavily Into real estate Assets increased profits rose and Smiley wound up with something liked shares of Peer- Elder There was one halcyon period when PeelElder went up to more than a share I was tempted to sell I could nave come out only about in the hole after years Not bad that But I hung In there Then about a year ago PeelElder with flam boyant burst of something or other Informed me that as a loyal shareholder I could have two shares for every one I had I dont remember the details I think you had to be a white Anglican with some teeth missing a bad back and no more or less than two children nlether of them selfsupporting Something like that Anyway I qualified GOT SHARES Thats how I wound up with shares of PeelElder And now along comes an im pressive brochure from an called Hambro Canada Limited with an offer to buy at a share In February and March I could have sold for about Hambro Is a Canadian affiliate of Ltd a London England based International merchant banker with a good many fingers in a good many pies Hambro Canada Ltd already owns almost per cent of PeelElder but wants to buy the rest Most of the directors and officers of PeelElder are also directors or of Hambro Canada Limited Areyouconfused Me too Its pretty obviously a takeover of an established Canadian corporation by a Britishbased corporation with somebody probably about to make a pot of bullion In the process And heres something else that puzzles me After 30odd years of watching PeelElder grow from a sickly little gold mine into a husky cor poration and watching my share of the cake diminish from a small wedge to a crumb I suddenly get two whacking great dividend cheques from PeelElder One for and the other 150 NO DIVIDENDS Wouldnt you be wary when youd not received a dividend for three decades and suddenly got two in one mail The offer to buy me out from Canada Ltd states rather sternly lhat the offer will expire July If I accept the offer I will receive 325 The stock cost me 30 years ago And Trudeau would probably wont a capital gains tax If 1 sold Well there we are I started out and Ive ended in a quagmire I wish Id put that original into a couple of beach lots which would now be worth 20000 I wish Id gone Into pig farming wish I could win a sweepstake the market We accept the fact that were compulsive gamblers and take our losses with a stiff lower lip Bui wont sell that stock Let them fight it out the corporate bums CPs DoubleDeckers Get GO Transit Test Councillor Complains About Council Action Poetic Salute Offered To Louisa May Alcott Georgetown There once was a women not long ago who in two years did write A book so full of luve and truth piety courage a ndmlght This popular book of long ago that many a girl did read Bore the inspiring title Little Women And in content It did not need The authors sir name Alcott and her first Louisa May She was born in German town Pennsylvania on one warm Novemmer day Louisas father Amos Branson raised four daughters with his wife Louisa Anna and Abba and a son who died early in his me Louisa wrote eight other books In her Eight Cousins Jock and Jill Hospital Sketches Under the Lilacs An old fashioned girl and Jos Boys which was her last To Little Women there was a sequel that was written In her This book was called Little Men and of course there was Rose In Bloom Unfortunately Louisa died In 88 In Boston And though her life did cease she will never be forgotten Louisa May Alcott was born an November 1832 and died on March and her beautiful book Little Women that I have read inspired me to write this poem I have also read other books of Sir Last week council by resolution discontinued the services of its Independent architect and on the advice of a local buildercontractor has begun negotiations of an arena to be constructed via the Design Build Concept I voted against this resolution because I feel this council is abdicating its public duly to ensure maximum return for the tax dollar and to protect the quality of construction on the new arena Lost year when the former Georaetown Council decided to build the arena it in- commenced discussions with a builder to see what would be offered In way of an arena complex for In design concept At that time Mr Tennant and others made council aware of the weakness in the design build concept After consideration council realized a mistake had been made and that the proper method of approach was to hire an architect who would design the arena to fill the reauirements as specified by council Then when tender specifications had been completed contractors would submit seated public tenders and the contract awarded to the lowest bidder This method has been followed and the tender documents were to be ready so that was planned to be commenced by the end of September council has now placed the exactly where It was fall and has completely Ignored the work done the Building Committee Fur ther no use will be made of the architects services over the last eight months for which will likely be In the neighborhood of On the advice of the same Mr Tennant who last fall advised against design build council has now embarked on this concept with its weaknesses My opposition to the change Is tor the following reasons I am convinced that the only proper way to invest this much of your money Is by sealed tenders based on specifications which have been drawn up by an In dependent architect working for the town The contract would men bo to lowest bidder The method which council has now chosen will not be by tender such as earlier described and will leave GO Transit and CP Rail have announced an ex- exchange of rail coaches in their Toronto and Montreal commuter ser vices For a twoweek period July 22 to August passengers of the two metropolitan rail operations will ride each others cars design features Regular service with the exchange equipment will be on Monday morning July 22 In both Montreal and Toronto Schedules for the visiting doubledecker cars In Toronto are planned to permit as many riders as possible to try out the cars Special questionnaires will be provided to record passenger comments Both CP Rail and GO are actively planning to meet the growing demand for commuter service and coach design is an important element In that planning As passengers are the best Judges of the acceptability of car layout and facilities their input to this program is a key element CP Rail will send nine of its type coaches lo Toronto exchange for 13 of the brand new singlelevel GO coaches Ontario transportation and communications minister John R Rhodes explained that GO has a very special interest In the extra passenger capacity of doubledecker cars GO Transit Is going to need increased capacity on Next Election Expected Busy what basis was used for the contract award The ability to maintain quality control Is seriously reduced because In the new proposal the specifications are compiled by an employee or architect retained by the contractor and not the town Council has begun to negotiate with a particular construction company with no investigation Into the record of the company and without contact to other construction companies Councils action Is irrational irresponsible and totally unrelated to sound financial and business Now that council has embarked on this approach I will do my utmost lo en courage other contractors to make bid proposals to council go that at least we can retain competition for provide some protection and QUEENS PARK guarantee for your money CounRic Morrow Unnecessary Dollars Spent Sir This letter Is written to Inform you the ratepayer that your council Is acting in a manner that Is costing unnecessary dollars Five quotes were recently submitted In connection with a sales tax audit of the towns records Council accepted the third lowest bid The fourth lowest bid was equivalent in all respects except a lower price plus being the past auditing firm for the town of Acton Further your council considered an appeal in mld- from the fourth lowest bidder and shelved the ap peal without the courtesy of a reply Mr Ratepayer If your council handles all contracts In this manner 1 suggest that you brace yourselves for an enormous mill rate increase Burlington Bible Verse For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for It Is the power of God unto to every one that to he Jew first and also to the Greek Romans ins its line yet more and longer trains of the present type are impractical without major and costly changes to the trackage and signal system he stated cars wllh per cent greater capacity could well be a partial answer to the problem STUDIES The first questions to be resolved added Mr Rhodes Include whether equipment is com patible with the peculiarities of the GO Transit line Can we operate It on the GO system with he same schedule efficiency and speed of our singlelevel trains These and similar questions have lo be an swered In practice not Just by engineering analysts So we are very pleased that CP Rail already has level cars In Its Montreal commuter service and that they have been good enough to let us try them out in Ontario CP Rail wilt put the ex change train of GO cars Into Its commuter service In Montreal Rail TownTraln service operates from near the QuebecOntario border through a string of suburban communities including Dorval and Westmount to Windsor station In the heart of Montreal Smith VicePresident Eastern Region for CP Rail said the railway Is pleased to work with GO In this unique Information and equipment exchange This has a great deal to say about preaching and priorities We ought obey God rather BYDONOHEARN queens Park Bureau Of The Herald TORONTO Nobody can say for sure when the next provincial general election will be The most likely date would be late September or early October of next year But one can say now that when it does come it almost certainly will be the fiercest and probably the most closely con tea led we have had in 30 years There are several good reasons for saying Among them are That politics now become a yearround business for all parties and their leaders That probably not since IMS have there been three such experienced and able leaders In the field at the same time And again not since IMS has there been a realistic chance of a government being upset THERES BLOOD That election In cidentally was the one In which George Drew led his minority back Into power over the and the Liberals As It turned out he swept back but the campaign itself was thrilling gnus at toast of and probably tierce fighting our next one should come close to it This should be true as mentioned because politics now Is a yearround business No more Is It a matter of laying off in the years bet ween elections All leaders are now con tinually at work at politics usually spending at least a couple of days a week visiting in the province and backing Ihem up they have fulltime hardworking organizations In the old days only the communists ever played politics so persistenUy Then there will be three good leaders Over Ihe years there have been better leaders than Premier Davis Bob Nixon and Stephen Lewis But In no election have there been three men of their calibre heading parties In the one campaign difference of all however should be that In this election there will be the cent of blood Its a scent thats already there Opponents believe that Davis can be beaten They believe It on evidence and ibey hold their belief with whole hearts
