were relatives from Port Hope Scarborough Glen Williams BelfountaJn Guelph Hlllaburgh and the Archie Lawr family from Ballinafad All sat down to a pot luck supper and a most enjoyable time was held Mr and Mrs John Hancock Carolyn and Grey took the plane from Toronto In ternational Airport on Sunday for Los Angeles From there they will be taking an ocean liner for Auckland New Zealand where they will be making their home The Hancocks have been residents in the village for several years John was the chairman of the first com mlttee when the community centre was being planned Hii wife was a Jim Hamilton Before the days of paved roads and modern roads in the Halton lllls area were not much more than rough trails through the bush A person could get very dusty and thirsty while travelling the roads of yesterday Main thoroughfares in the area had their share of hotels and halfway houses to ac commodate and quench the thirst of the weary traveller It la said that along the miles of road between and 21 hotels existed too offered Its share of drinking spots The village had five hotels in operation at one point In its history The Centervllle Hotel located south of the village near the comer of the town line and number nine slderoad was a large frame building which burned down in the 1920s Four more hotels were located in the village one building now exists as the Driftwood Tea Room and another was the home of the late Dr Forbes and is now a private residence Gallops Hotel stood next to Kens Lunch and burned In 1035 The one Norval hotel to survive until the present time Is the Hollywood Hotel BIG CENTRE In the early days of the Hollywood Hotel was a great Industrial centre The village had a tinsmith harness maker blacksmith and most notably a flour mill The flour mill which dates back to the time of James McNabb the original settler of Norval was once called McNabbvtile was directly across the road from the Hollywood Hotel It would not be uncommon to see several wagon loads of grain lined up waiting to be delivered Into the mill for grinding A man could get- mighty thirsty sitting In the line on a hot day thus the Hollywood was never abort of customers The Hollywood is said to have served full course meals consisting of roast potatoes peas carrots pie and coffee for only 35 cents Several people believe that the name Hollywood was given to the Hotel only recently in order to give It some of the glamour associated with the better known Hollywood of motion picture fame but If one looks at even very early photographs it can be seen that Hollywood was the hotels original name The hotel has been altered somewhat since Its erection During the IBM a when High way came into being and the road through Norval widened the hotel was cut In half to make way for the roadway During prohibition the hotel building housed first a butcher market and later a boot repair shop Unfortunately very little Is known about the background of the building but one can be assured that many Interesting The Niagara Escarpment Commission has opened a branch office in Grimsby The commission Is headquartered In Georgetown Robert Welch attorney genera for the province cut
