September 1174 HIGHWAY MESSAGE A Belt For Safety Ontario and some other Canadian provinces are con sidering legislation to make it mandatory to wear seat belts while riding in or driving cars Before such governments act they should take a closer look at the im plications of such legislation How would it be enforced Its easier to spot a construction worker who isnt wearing a safety helmet than it is a person enclosed in a car who isnt wearing his seat Cars can be designed with gadgetry to make them Impossible to start or to drive when seat belts arent used but ways can be found around such gadgets usually in short order There are many persons especially among the aged who suffer from serious fears about beingstrapped into cars And older people often have a difficult time with buckles and webbing and other restraints In Australia where com pulsory seat belt legislation has been introduced more and more voices are being heard in op position including those of safety experts who ask repeal of the law So where does that leave high way safety In the realm of public education There are many of us who know that seat belts help reduce injuries and deaths in highway crashes and we use them We are getting safer cars and safer highways but we could use safer drivers before we aim at strapping everyone into their cars We should educate people to wear seat belts In this way we can raise a generation of people who have learned to use these safety restraints We accomplish far less if we try to force people to protect themselves against their will Dead Is Dead Is Dead Hunting seasons fast are drawing upon us and a curious phenomenon appears about this time Opponents of bow hunting get louder with allegations about cruelty Except as an atavistic method of animal population control hunting of any kind makes no sense to the average North American But hunting is hunting and to deny it is to strike a blow against the church motherhood and freedom So lets stick to the point of cruelty Bow hunting is no crueler than hunting with a gun and probably a lot less so An animal can be killed just as dead with a bowfired arrow as with a gunfired bullet The only difference is the manner in which death occurs The sharp piercing arrow causes tremendous hemorrhaging while the bullet kills by shock For a human to understand its like deciding between being bashed or punctured either should be avoided If we must have our for hunting then we towards the bow and arrow Its far less successful than using guns its much safer for we human hunters ever see a bow and arrow hunter taking sound shots with his bow and its more sport you have to stalk and get much closer to your prey From an animals point of view the odds are a little more Another Gift Of Life Theres one gift most of us can give without opening our wallets or digging into our pockets Its the gift of blood whole blood that becomes the gift of life to someone who needs it Another Red Cross blood donor clinic will be held in Georgetown next week Monday to be precise and blood donors are asked to turn out to give their blood Local organizers would like to see donors or more make the gift Theres a special request for Type 0 Negative blood Its required by Toronto General Hospital for an operation scheduled for Sept 11 The donor never knows who the benefitting person will be whether from his donation of whole blood the derivatives taken from it but the appreciation is great Without a supply of the correct blood type surgery cannot be attempted This clinic if youve given before give again if youd like to give for the first time do so Its painless and the satisfaction is great And still with the CNE visitors to the grandstand show were able to see a former Georgetown singer In the chorus He was Tom about In the newspapers Below are a few of the more recent ones that have managed to send my blood pressure to a nice boll Knievel Is the dare devil stunt driver who on Sept will attempt a jump a halfmile wide over the Snake River Gorge In his rocket powered His reasoning for doing It works out about the same as climbing a mountain Its there and no one has made such a jump before Well thats all well and good Knievel is a stunt driver who has done this type of dare devil thing all his life What Infuriates me was a front page picture in the Toronto Star of a young boy about or 13 years old who was flying high in the air on his bike over five of his young friends lying on the ground below The caption read hades of Knievel Wben Evel Knievel jumps hes risking his own life no one Any newspaper should have more sense than to publish such a picture this group of boys was being stupid enough without spreading the Idea further Another prime example of the I dont give a damn as long as It sells papers policy ZOO STOREY When our new HO million dollar zoo opened Aug 15 everyone was quite en thusiastic Since then numerous stories of some dangerous encounter bet ween the public and the animals have appeared Now they tell us that the lions cant be shown because the too officials are afraid they might leap the 14 foot moat and eat a person or two Imagine that million and no one took the lime to know the abilities of the animals in residence Now theyre going to spend another to make the zoo safe Thats really great a nice safe zoo that un fortunately no one will be able to afford to see Of course thats the government for you big business big mistakes ADULTS ONLY A recent news story suggests that the govern ment might make It com pulsory for landlords to accept tenants with children In todays society cockroaches are more welcome in apartment buildings I cant see the reasoning of the apartment owners for adults only Ive visited many adult- only buildings where the report which has raised so much controversy but a most surprising amount of agreement As you probably have gathered from news reports Bill from his Inquiry has most throughly indicated the NHL as not only being violence prone but also for encouraging violence He points out that hockey Is the only contact sport in which violence is regarded as a minor breach of rules His interrogation of NHL resident Clarence Campbell out that in years he knew of no match penalty Scanty Social Life Funeral And Wedding Perhaps I sounded a bit grumpy last week because this has been one of those summers when a chap feels that he hasnt done anything seen anything or been anywhere And it has But that Is not tosay that It has been without interest and incident Last week I whined about our scanty social life one funeral one wedding However weve had some very Interesting visitors Almost every day Roofers painters a columnist a student a syndicate man a physiotherapist and the most Interesting of all my And I reckon Ive learned a week bit about human nature in the process Perhaps thats what its all about I like physical nature as well as the next man but I am fascinated by human nature NATURE Physical nature Is In teresting and fairly predictable You plant a seed properly nurture it give It plenty of fertilizer the right amount of sun and water pluck out the weeds around I and you wind up with a dandy cucumber or turnip or whatever you planted But you cant do that with humans though you try Maybe we give them too much fertilizer or dont pluck the weeds We plant what we think is going to be a rose and it turns out to be a cabbage Or vice versa Any parent knows this By the way dont get excited or nervous This Is not a tract on Freudian sexual symbolism It Is merely a middleaged man trying to express his astonishment at the variegation of the human species Once again I drift Into one of those remote channels that end up In a swamp Why not stock to the main stream Back to our summer visitors There are two categories those who caught us at home and those who did not SHOPPING Those In latter category came around when we were out doing something exotic like shopping Or at night when we were cringing in the TV room lights out doors locked phone off the hook arguing about whether READERS FORUM lively columnist Renfrew Mercury Darn you BUI Smiley I came all the way from Renfrew Sorry Doris Ill buy you a dinner next time I read your column every week in one of Canadas best weeklies And remind your boss that he still owes me a dinner He was a terrifiedlnfantrymanwhen I was a terrified Typhoon pilot SHARP MIND Another note was from a student Sharp mind headed for university and law Beware you lawyers of five years from now Dont fool with this young lady punk woman person Shell murder you Typically with the deep respect my students gave me her note began HI Smiley I came around and you didnt even have the decency to be at home A few visitors caught us at home One was Bill Craig of Syndicate who has more to do with getting out this column than anyone except me Our previous acquaintance had been on the phone I expected a smartalec young punk of about twentysix with the sideburns the big pants and the hearty manner I was shattered He and his wife Betty arrived for that notorious ap petizer They have an eighteen yearold daughter and a sweet shy little son James who is five Bill Is a Korean war veteran He demolished me at two games of chess and played a fair piano So much for preconceptions Some of the others who caught us In were the painters and the roofers When we were up at the crack of dawn ready for any questions they didnt show up When we were up at the crock of noon not expecting them they were buzzing the doorbell at like hornets I report not happily but just as an observer that they were all stung severely by a number of hornets in our roof and environs HARD WORK Then there was the Scot sman He Is a physiotherapist Boy thats a hard word to spell He wanted work after hours so he could buy a house I was rather Intrigued by the Idea that a young man actually wanted to work And then there was my bad back which comes In handy very often Hes an excellent fardener and our place better than It has in a decade Bui there Ive run out of space and I havent even told you of the party In our backyard for retarded adults or the of my He has just and I can hear him shouting downstairs for Bill or somebody who un derstands that when hes asleep he is pure angel and when hes awake hes pure devil Sir May I appeal to your readers to support the In ternational Society for the Protection of Animals In their attempts to provide relief for the tens of thousands of abandoned stray and injured animals in Cyprus Many of these animals are In pitiful con dition all require assistance I do not wish to suggest for one moment that animals In this tragic situation should be given priority over human needs In fact I hope that the matter will be kept In proper perspective Nevertheless the need is urgent and by helping to solve the animal problems we may be playing a small part In helping the situation In Cyprus return to normal The Ontario Humane Society which la a member of the International Society for the Protection of Animals has been asked to assistance in the of drugs and veterinary supplies We are arranging with veterinary drug supply companies to nave supplies shipped to Cyprus and we are hopeful that these supplies will be Down to Cyprus in government aircraft If not we will send them by air in the normal manner Anyone wishing to support this appeal should send a donation to the Ontario Humane Society marked Cyprus TI Hughes executive vicepresident Regard Ad Poor Taste currently working for Festival But even more impressive or distressing was fact that violence was Invading amateur hockey and par ticularly junior hockey to an amazing degree For example In SatelliteHamilton Red Wings playoff game which he Immediate target of the inquiry there were 189 minutes in penalties several vicious fights resulting only In minor penalties and five J layers and one official in ured TV INFLUENCE There will be arguments as to just how effective the McMurtry Inquiry may turn out to be ami of course only time can tell this One thing is certain it Is not a waste Murtry and government get credit If only for its educational value the report Is worthwhile Whether it can curb hockey violence Is another question- Possibly amateur officials may be shamed into stricter rules and enforcement But there will still be the NHL and television which admittedly caters to violence and In turn their influence on young players growing up And until wiser heads than are now on the horizon In professional hockey prevail it seems this Influence will continue Sir I am writing this letter in protest about an ad vertisement for A Js Place you ran In your paper Aug 14 Aa a mother of two children I feel It was done In very poor taste and cannot understand a paper allowing it to be printed I realize people have to advertise to promote business but could it not be done in better taste Have a good look at that ad I found it very offensive In this dav and age we have enough poor ad vertising being pushed down our throats and surely a local small paper can do without this kind of ad I hope my tetter will be read and you will reconsider the type of advertising you do from now on Also I am aware of a letter sent by Marilyn Hutchison In regard to the same thing and agree completely with It Lynda Alien Bowen Acton
