FATE IS SEALED Norval Residents Bitter About Closing BrDeroUrrMcLtt A sign stating Democracy It dud smeared In front of Public School last Thursday evening following the special meeting of Hilton School Board when ratepayers went down to defeat In their battle to reopen school with a vote of This sign summed up the feelings of the people from Norval who had attended the meeting They left white faced and too angry to talk to reporters but most of all with a feeling of disgust and helplessness because they realized that the people have no say in this so called democratic country of Canada land of the free They found out that although all of the Norval school area people wanted the school open for the pupils on September 3rd and were backed by the majority of Hal ton HUls ratepayers this meant ab solutely nothing to the Hal ton School Board who consider themselves above the will of the people they represent and who pay their salaries RAY OP HOPE The Norval people had felt a ray of hope on Tuesday evening when five trustees met with six representatives from Norval at the home of Mr and Mrs Hugh McFarlane D Wood former chairman of Wards and Milton Mrs J Alexander Vicechairman Phyles SCHOOL AND SIGN Once during the evening for their children to do without when a discussion Involved a a gym as they felt the friend yellow form sent out by the ships made in a small school school board giving local pupils where everyone knew everyone the option of attending other else the feeling of belonging schools and naming the schools and the sense of Identity the but leaving out Norval school as children gained far outweighed an option but no one had a copy the few minutes they could as they had to be returned and spend In a gym They pointed the school board members out that Norval school was a apparently didnt know happy school where every child anything about the form participated In school ac- said he thought he had ttvltles with good parent the answer but the form he had participation and a good in mind was not the one the parent and teacher relationship Norval parents had referred to that they have found in absent This was the extent of his in the larger schools this they conversation for the evening wanted to continue for their and he was first out the door children following lunch served by the hostess and several mothers of the pupils QUESTIONS IN FAVOR At he meeting on Thursday evening Mr Wood Mrs Alexander and Howard Lock spoke In favor of The other four board school remaining open members however asked Others however seemed very questions and presented their concerned that one teacher would have to teach grades representatives and left three tour and five and knowing the reasons why thought this was too much to ratepayers wanted the expect from any teacher They school open for the pupils talked about two teachers one from Grade One to Five and or grades one and two and one Kindergarten pupils from the for grades three four and five school area That the main Never once was it mentioned objective of the parents was that Is a three roomed stability for their children school and had always had pointing out the fact of growth ihree teachers there until last in the east end of Georgetown year when the board removed and asking what did they plan grade one and grade six and for the Norval pupils when the reduced the number of pupils to George Kennedy school was full A survey by the They suggested that If there ratepayers showed that the were not enough pupils from parents of 14 kindergarten the area to fill the school pupils and M from grade one to some parents In the east end of five preferred their children to Georgetown might prefer their attend the school children to attend Norval Mrs Alexander mentioned school They already come to the new trend In education for Cubs Brownies and today Is for family soccer practise grouping several grades In They told the board members one room where children can present that they were willing learn from each other and learn responsibility to younger children just what school already has FINAL OUTCOME D Herd Ward four Oak remarked that the vote should be taken and get the agony over with as they all knew the final outcome Bill Lawson gave a very contradictory tirade against the people of Norval He started by saying that he had known he Norval people longer than any others present long before there was a School Board and his experience was that groups from were always asking for something more tor their school Then he said that he was against large schools and had always been against them but In the next breath continued on against the people of saying that at the previous board meeting the Norval people had said they would be happy with the school as it was but at the meeting on Tuesday evening they were asking for more eventoanewschool and if they reopened the school this is how they would find the Norval people always asking for more After this Urade he stated that Norval people had his Indeed he felt sorry for them but he had to vote no It was Mr who suggested a new school on Tuesday evening not the Norval representatives All they requested was that the school remain open especially for the younger pupils EDUCATION Mrs Alexander pointed out that Norval parents wanted the school to be a community school and she thought this would be an excellent Idea as the community was so in teres ted In the school and this was the only recreational grounds In the village Ernie of Georgetown stated that We are In the business of education not recreation which was resented by the group very much as over the past three years the board members have been stressing that what the Norval pupils were missing was a lovely big gym that would be available to them at a larger school They have always understood that a gym was for exercise and games just what The quality of the education at Norval school was never an Hit SI Kit J i agreed that the quality depended on the teacher ft E of Ward three Oakvllle who baa voted for consistently over the past three years was away on holidays It was apparent that most remarks by the board members on the Issue were from closed minds such as Miss E Robinson from Ward three who stated our policy Is to close all small schools and build large ones so 1 vote no It was also quite apparent from the remarks of Chairman W J of the Separate School that he was opposed to the reopening of School Following the vote which was by a show of hands and not a recorded vote as asked for by Hugh McFarlane before the start of the meeting the board carried on with the next Item of business ratepayers left the meeting mostly in silence with only a few making anorv remarks One parent said that he hoped that Burlington would enjoy their big new school as that was why Norval school had been closed The people actually only outdoors on the skating rink and playing baseball In the summer In other words
