COMMENT Thats spirit not violence BY STEVE WALL It Kerns that my last column concerning violence In football has upeet some people They felt that the column implied that there la a certain amount of unnecessary violence and Irresponsibility In high school football I apologize to anyone who took the column that way because it wasnt intended The point of the article was to stress the Importance of team spirit and aggression In football especially high school and college Kids who play merely for the thrill of violence dont last long in any team and coaches who are irresponsible towards their players health quickly lose the support and faith of their team Mr Bob McKay coach for the Georgetown and District High School junior football team Is a dedicated coach whose love for the snort Is obvious to anyone playing or connected with the team Hes doing a marvelous Job at the high school and apologize to him for any derogatory inference that may have been construed from my column To use again Mr McKay swords Football aggression People connect violence with evil and perversion fortunately aggression has been lumped together with violence as something to be restrained and shunned Yet people are naturally aggressive and It Is the success of any society to channel peoples aggression Into useful and beneficial Dursults Football such a pursuit as does boxing hockey and soccer In fact almost any sport has aggression as an Intrinsic Ingredient Sometimes the aggression spills over into violence and sometimes the sport gets a bad name when the violence goes unchecked as in hockey But this rarely happens In football because of the high level of organization in foot ball perhaps that Is why football is so successful In my opinion theretsnovlolence In football and coming from a background of Saturday afternoon professional soccer It a refreshing change Again I would stress that most people play because of the team spirit involved not because of any violent element BOW Julie
