Band situation explained To the Editor of the As Musical Director and a long time member of Acton Citizens Band founded and In operation since I must to reports regarding the Bands annual grant The problem Is one affecting regional government decisions since the beginning Geonietown and administrators In Halton Hills know little about Acton appear to care less and measure everything by what has happened in Georgetown Consequently statements are made about Acton affairs which are often misinformed or If representatives did not know the Acton Band situation they should have called me for Information come up to see us or talked to Councillors McKeniie and Duby both former Acton Council members on the Acton Band Committee Since they did not of the unfortunate impressions created by their comments must be corrected Firstly the band did not demand its grant as reported but was asked in 1973 to submit a budget for 197 as It always did This was submitted The band then cut back its remaining program to save money for operations in 1974 because a delay in receiving Its grant was an ticlpated This delay has stretched out to a whole year and put the band In some dif flculfy I personally have been working from 7 to 10 two nights a week all year as director of the music program at no pay Hills councillors have not had to do this and probably would not The Acton grant larger than the for Georgetown Girls Pipe Band The situations are however quite different We have people at present In our total band program for girls and boys men and women of ages Senior Band Junior Band Junior and Adult in structlon classes This works out to a cost of about per person per year The Pipe Band has members all girls and women which gives them about per person per year This Is not a criticism of their operation because a Pipe Band dif ferent needs and requirements It would appear though Acton Band operates at slightly less cost per person involved per year Pipe Band members must buy their own instruments which is a real credit to them and their Interest in the band but since this excludes people who cannot afford the cost It Is unfair a band such as Actons supplies most instruments A set of pipes costs about A clarinet the cheapest band instrument costs prices for all other instruments go up from that We cannot expect our Tuba players who are workers or students to pay for a tuba We would not have a band unless we supplied instruments Also Pipe Band members pay for tuition which Acton Band supplies free as part of their public service No one Is excluded from the Acton Band program for personal financial reasons At one time Georgetown had a good Citizens Band That band died of starvation because the community would not give the financial support necessary to maintain it We know this because Acton and Georgetown Bands had close contacts and often discussed the lack of support In Georgetown By contrast the much smaller town of Acton to Its great credit was more enlightened and gave the Acton Band adequate funds In a grant established by plebiscite in the s and again in the As a result Acton has available a cultural recreational activity Milton as well This band performs at no charge for all sorts of concerts civic oc caslons and celebrations In Acton In fact the Acton Band appeared at no charge for Inauguration of Go train service In Georgetown because no other band was available This was at the request of Halton Hills Mayor The band is a musical organization and not a fund raising one It did raise con money and con tributed all the labor to build its self supporting practice hall This means all money Is used for musical programs and not partially for rent of a nail If members had spend time year after year trying to raise money for operation In addition to their musical activities the band would quickly die Look what happened to Georgetown Citizens Band To conclude the Acton Band submitted a brief detailing its comnlete history operation and programs to the Halton Province has missed the point To the Editor of The Herald I hope all the people who signed up In support of GUARD when Indus mm wanted to deposit 400 tons of garbage in their excavation near Acton will make every effort to attend the public meeting of the Regional Works Committee in the Regional Council Chambers on Nov dealing with Haltons garbage I hope community leaders from Eden Mills Ac ton Agerton Zimmerman Knatchbuil the Boyne will be there Any of these areas could become the recipient of ville or Burling tons garbage The only way to be informed is to be there William A Johnson Chairman GUARD Recreation Director early In This is available for all councillors to read The former Acton Council always had complete and open access to all band financial and musical program Information I would ask then that Hills Councillors and Administrators who dont know the Acton Band situation If they really want to be conscientious and fair come and see our operation any Tuesday or Wednesday night from to 10 If there are questions they should contact me or our Band President Mr G Paton or come to our Band Committee meetings held once a month and ask them Then they could state facts to be quoted in the press instead of misconceptions Yours trnly George Elliott Director Acton Citizens Band THE ST JOHNS Christmas Bazaar drew a large crowd to
