THE HERALD Wednesday December Julian Reed has the solution to energy crisis The name Julian Reed is a familiar name to Halton Hills residents through his efforts in fighting the Norval school issue However Jay Stone reporter with the Brampton Daily Times discovered another interesting facet of Mr Reeds lifestyle Following is his story By Jay Stone Julian Reed has found a new weapon to battle the energy crisis water power Hes building a hydraulic turbine in the Credit River to provide electricity to his IBroom house once the site of a flour mill Its either going to be the last or the first of its kind Mr Reed predicts depending on how it works out He said it is the first new power installation on the Credit since 1885 The will generate horsepower of electricity enough he hopes to heat his norne and cut down on his a year oil bill Mr Reed owns 100 acres at the edge of this village including water rights to the mile of the Credit which flows through his land That plus a lifelong interest in water power puts him In a unique position to harness the river His great grandfather Robert Noble came to and used water power to run the mill When Mr Reed took over the farm in 1963 he also inherited the old dam used for the mill The dam is no longer in use but will be revived for his project He plans back into the dam let the water back up and refill an old pond once on the property At the edge of the pond runs off the Credit he is building a 20foot high bulkhead out of stone the first step in his hydraulic power system Into the bulkhead will go a four ton Barber Bros turbine which works on water pressure It is submerged In the water and connected to a series of Victorian looking shafts that create the power The electricity will run to the house along feet of underground cable Mr Reed 38 scrounged the equipment from abandoned mills around the province probably know more about the location of water turbines than anyone he says He began planning the project two years ago with the help of a retired electrical engineer Construction began in August and the bulkhead is now feet high He hopes to complete the remaining five feet this year and install the waterwheel next year Mr Reed has had some help from his friends who pour cement and haul stone His family doctor comes up two or three days a week to help out as do two airline pilots A bank inspector friend is one great cement mixer he says Mr Reed says the main object is to cut his heating costs and he hopes the project will pay for itself in three years He will convert his oil furnace to steam He describes himself as power buff who cant look at rushing water without thinking of the potential power With the energy crisis he said we should be looking at non polluting resources like water air and sunlight Anyone who has seen water power working fascinated by it Its like an old steam engine a living thing Mr Reed said Ontario Hydro has bought out most small water systems in the province but now they may be necessary again to help fight the energy crunch He does not plan to convert all electrical systems in his house to water power however Notice of Application to the Ontario Municipal Board By The
