Keeping your former neighbour posted easy Remember Wahn Ohnley He made his debut is this column a few weeks ago and some of you I hope will remember him as the little guy who keeps running between the Heralds first and second floor here in beautiful downtown Georgetown carrying with him pieces of paper called copy paper And we aft know cony paper is the of paper on which is written all the great that appears weekly in the columns of the Herald Without copy paper there could be no copy Think of it And without copy paper where would we all be Wed have nothing to wrap our fish and chips in But to get back to the girls who deal with him at the Herald says he has an uncanny ability of developing chest muscles Not that Ohnley has a chest Its the girls chest muscles Im talking about See Wahn is made of plywood and he runs up and down inside a shaft made of plywood and the only way to get our friend to do his duty between the first and second floor is by pulling him up and down through the elevator shaft All of which makes Ohnley a dumb waiter and yours truly even more dumb because Im convinced not a single reader wilt be able to figure out what Im talking about I realize this is a terrible way of beginning a column so Ill start again and let you in on my secret I suffering from a severe case of post budget preChristmas blues Youll recall the budget I wrote about Its all finished now A whole year of happy Heraldry Is in store for all of us ana I might as well let the cat out of the bag were planning for a family increase that would make the Pope proud And just so my own family does not become totally confused by all this let me explain that the increase in family refers to the Herald family of readers All of which brings me to your Christmas shopping list In last weeks Herald we ran a whole series of gift suggestions some of which no doubt made you chuckle But we got so carried away with the Christmas spirit we forgot one of the best gift suggestions of them all a gift subscription to none other than the good Herald Why not send one for a year to a son or daughter In college or a former neighbor who has moved awaV or to an aunt or uncle or parents And Im not saying this because we have ambitions of becoming a national Herald After all even now we have readers the world over And several of those are Christmas gifts Not the readers but you know what I mean This kind of year round gift really does beat a box of expensive cigars or a bottle of great booze because not only does it last longer it is really more mellow and rich and The Herald would keep that former neighbor posted on everything of significance and much not so significant perhaps that happens in the former neighbors former neigh borhood How s all that for a com merclal right on the editorial page Talk about Increasing the family It really is a bargain this Herald youre reading Compare what you pay for It to the price of a cup of coffee or a package of cigarettes and then think of how many people it took how many hours to write type work Wahn typeset pasteup shoot print deliver all this to your door or the news stand from which you got your Herald Hark You can order your Christmas Herald by telephone Windsors winter lesson Windsor had a van severe storm on election day and because of this we may see some changes In our elections both in the municipal and fields and par In the matter of their timing As you know the Municipal Act now requires that all local elections be held on the first Monday In December and further that the polls must be open from 11 a until Well in the border city conditions were so bad that some polls couldn open on time ACT CLUMSY This meant they couldn be open the nine hours that the Municipal Act requires The Act says that the polls must be open for a full con tinuous nine hours And it provides that when this is Impossible because of an emergency they then must be open the following day and if they still can t fulfill the requirement on subsequent days until it is possible for to do so The Windsor experience showed two things One was bow clumsy the Municipal Act Is on this requirement For Instance if polls complete the full nine hours and others don how Is the voter to know which polls will be open the following day and which won t be Then there is the second factor that It was illustrated that in most parts of Ontario December can be a hazardous time to hold an election Insofar as storms go it can be one of our most hazardous months BE EARLIER The reason for setting the December date originally was that this would mean that In coming councils wouldn t have too long a time standing by while waiting to take over on January But in practical terms another months waiting time shouldnt be too much of a handicap In fact it would give a further period to themselves with their up coming work and be better prepared from the start The second point should mean that we give thought At one time no political leader would have thought of calling a winter election This was mainly because of the difficulties In campaigning In recent years Improved roads and transportation services we have tended to veer tm bought now that we have seen an election itself pretty well stormed out there we will be hold any Id are absolutely essential ALL EXSERVICE PERSONNEL THEIR DEPENDENTS Are Invited to take advantage of
