The team came through Tilt ftrimi GDHS wrestlers retain provincial crown by Gibson Herald Sports the GDHS wrestling learn won lis second straight AllOntario title this past weekend in Waterloo the road to the ultimate triumph was by no means an easy one The team was beset with nagging problems which began even before the season got underway and was only discipline and a strong sense of team togetherness that enabled them to capture the provincial pnie The story of their pitfall strewn path to the title deserves to be told and It it should be told by John a team captain who had a sterling year himself John 19 began seriously in grade nine tenure at GDHS His family had just moved from Hamilton and although John had dabbled in the sport it was not until he came under the Influence of coach Lew Martin that he began to truly con on wrestling He was very Impressed with Martin and the athletes on the team both on and off the mots and felt he v like to become a part of their proud tradition John had won his fair share of in the provincials he found- he slightly out of his depth Two years ago he failed to place and lost year he finished seventh in his weight class As this was to be his last year in high school It was a now or never situation and John determined that it would most definitely be now The departure of Lew Martin heralded the start of what would be a long season for the Rebel mat man An John says Yes I was disapppointed when Mr Martin left as were other wrestlers on the team The thing was right away people started saying that we would be in trouble John felt this JOHN unfair as the team s new head coach Bob McKay had worked with team under MPitin for three years and was capable of providing the necessary leadership Nevertheless the critics were in full voice and Ironically this might hove aided the team A lot of veteran wrestlers had left and this plus the coaching change had a definite influence on the older wrestlers altitude realized we had a responsibility to the team commented John and we were determined to make the year a success With the approval of coach McKay and his assistants Mike McMahon and Ray John and the veterans began to lake an active role In bringing on the younger wrestlers Regardless of outside knockers the had begun to develop a team cohesion and this was to prove their main forte as the season The Dual Meet and In season basically exhibitions In high school wrestlinghad hardly begun when because of Injuries and other reasons the Rebels were unable to compete as a full team Their results in these exhibitions were not as strong as In years past and again the cry went out thai the Rebels were fading Again however noted John the absence of certain of our veteran wrestlers in a strange way helped our team lie explained this apparent pardox in this way The youngsters on the team were thrown into competitions that in past wouldnt have seen them entered They Ithe began to really feel a part of the team and were no longer outsiders They were contributing and In a lot of cases they provided us with very vauable points The llebs won their own tournament handily and it should have provided a sign of things lo come The full team competed and this marked the drat time this year that the had a complete con llngcnt of wrestlers on the mats Despite this noted John doubts continued to be aired and knew that wc would stand or fall in the regional meets As the and Peel Hal tons rolled around the wore beginning to peak and just at the right time according lo John The coaching staff did a great job In handling out mental attitude throughout the season They brought us along bit by bit over the rough spots keeping us on an even keel throughout everything The team was beginning to roll and John felt Emotionally we were gelling higher and higher and we knew no one could stop us The swept through the and the Peel lolhen face their most difficult task the defence of their provincial title Just prior to the provincials the team again suffered a setback Ten would be going to Waterloo two of the team mainstays Bill Bradley and Andy Cammun would not be able to compete because of injuries That the learn again pulled together Is now history For John the provincials marked the high point of his wrestling career as he won the championship In the 157 lb class It was an even more satisfying win or him because of what the team had been through this year The Rebs short story this year is one of total team effort and total learn dedication Young men and their coaches pulling together and sticking through adversity That they maintained their poise and their wrestling ability throughout Is a credit to both themselves and the GDHS wrestling program They began the season as plons and in more ways than one ended the season on the same triumphant note How do top a Provincial Championship With great difficulty one might reply but then again nothing sue like success and whats wrong with two provincial championships to sweeten the pot That was the recipe followed by the GDHS wrestling rebels this past weekend in Waterloo us Ihey left the mals All Ontario the second year in a led all 113 points High School was next In line with points while Winston Churchill High School of Scarboro finished in third place with a total of The Rebels took 10 wrestlers to the provincials and gar three lilies as well as a fourth two filths and two sixths Another provincial title might have been possible but Andy Gunman who wrestles in the lb weight dislocated his ankle at a team practice earlier in the week and was unable to enter the competition There were wrestlers from all over Ontario in weight classes at the tour but the Rebels remained undaunted throughout For Rebel coach Bob McKay the championship was Ihe biggest thrill that he has experienced in As he commented After ex- the ups and downs of this season then watching as your boys came up with supreme efforts to win the championship you feel emotionally drained He also had words of praise for hn two assistants Ray and Mike McMahon who worked with him In bringing the Ihe provincial honours Brian took the lb title and just kept getting stronger as Ihe tournament wore on He won the title by a margin Rick was the lb champion and in the words of No one to him at all He by either a pin or a decision by ten points or more and was in a class by himself won It nil at lbs and Ironically he ended up wrestling Ihe man he had beaten for the Peel Championship This was Andy from Central Peel but again he proved no malch for the Georgetown wrestler as John won the match 1 Pat Robert wan fourth in the lb class Dapper Dave was fifth at lbs Wayne Martin was fifth at Hi lbs Bill was sixth at 106 lbs and Steve Turner was sixth at 17B lbs Gavin Sirachan and Peter Founder although they didnt finish at the lop of their class con iribuled very valuable team A sidelight to the actual w resiling was the appearance of coach last year Martin who turned up wilh 12 w resllcrs from his Smith Falls High School team Two of his GDHS girls dominate meet boys finished third in their respective weight classes but Lews ability as a coach has not diminished in the least as this marks the first time that Smith Palls has been represented at the provincials No doubt Ihey will be a power to contend with In the years lo
