LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Garbage over children Campbell charges THE HERALD Wedn October 1KI Ntw Stephen Lewis Leader of the Democratic Party Smith Leader of the Ontario Liberal Parly N S PAHK Toronto a supporter of the Trefnoine- Britannia alliens in their opposition to Site F a regional garbage dump I welcome the support you have offered our en concerns At the same time I find your priorities in selecting this cause as deserving your earnest attention to be peculiar if not perverse in view of your refusal to provide he slightest backing to the concerns of a parent ratepayer committee In in their two year quest to improve our public education system In face you have both been quoted In the press as ridiculing the anguished concerns of a of parents expressed in their behalf by the Renaissance briefs to the Board and to the Minister of Education As a sectarian partisan committee seeking to exert the civilizing influences of parent power In public education Renaissance has enormous sacrifice to Its nearly 1000 members pleaded with the leaders of all Parties In On to consider the plight of the majority of parents in this region as reflected in the results of an every householder opinion survey who would prefer to have their children educated In schools committed to the traditional educational philosophy rather than under the destructive Influences of the permissive secularism dominant now in the public llenaissance contends that in its year intensive quest for the public schools there are no problems encountered that would not be by allowing schools committed to traditional values to compete on equal which now have a government monopoly in public education In Ontario Premier Davis and Education Minister Wells have demonstrated a willingness to consider the illy of the basic human rights of these parents which are now being grossly violated in the present system There are signs that the Davis government beginning to respond to these concerns and we arc hopeful that Ontario parents will be permitted alternatives in an open education system which is compatible with the character of our pluralistic society As leaders of the opposition Parties your studied of parental con in education coupled with your enthusiasm for he environmental issue raised by our Britannia group suggests that in your priorities our GARBAGE is more important to you than our CHILDREN Sincerely Ken Campbell Is aim of committee to make money for arena To the Editor of the Herald Re A n Arena Rental Rates As part of the delegation representing the Acton Junior and Intermediate Hockey Clubs at the G A C meeting on Monday September re Story on page September issue I wish to clarify some of the comments made during the meeting by some of the committee members While in attendance at these meetings some statements lends to be overlooked until reminded of them by he subsequent newspaper articles The most obvious pressloa got from the committee Is hat they feel a Junior Hockey is the same as a license to print money Nothing could be further from the truth Even the Georgetown Gem In is suffered a loss of op proximately S3 despite super support from their Tans As our Recreation Director stated our operation of a Junior or Intermediate Hockey Is Private Enterprise and as such small gates and high costs are your the Clubs problem You the Clubs are not doing a good Job at fund raising if you the Club is in financial difficulty Even though Councillor Morrow insisted Mr Gray remarks were taken out or context I do not know how else they could be interpreted In Acton in particular such As for Councillor Morrow quote I have never heard so much S over in my life I afraid he has missed the whole point In the 1975 season our Ice rental rates for both practice and gomes games was ft IBS tor 197677 our projected Ice rental rates or practice and games games is This represents an increase in this 1 item of SI Ml 15 or 155 cent The Councillor obvious theatrics of throwing a bill an the table followed by Mr bill was neither humorous nor predated Besides both gentleman quickly picked up their money before wc had a chance to accept their kind offer The thinking of the G AC may well be that wc have been spoiled by low rates at the Acton arena In the past however it appears they are intent in recouping all at once rather than In gradual stages In an effort to upgrade the calibre of hockey in our town and to cut down on excessive a thing as or free enterprise In sports simply docs not exist If he wished to check Mr Gray would find that as Tew Individuals In the Acton area help coach manage or help organize Minor Hockey and all for the privilege of spending ten to twenty hours per week of their free time at he arena with no thought of remuneration Free enterprise Indeed travel we applied for and fought for a Junior B rating despite the of being a small Town It appears that with the Increase in calibre he Town of Hills It Is a good time to double the ice costs In the five year period of operating a Junior then Junior Club wc ill ways paid our bills sometimes with the help of bank loan but mostly through he thankless task of the vol untccr ex ecu live and helpers rounding up Sponsors and Ad vertiscrs and of course he oval Tans Region funds Regional council is expected approve oday use of from the Acton area permit account for the construction of in Administration committee endorsed the move last week learning that Halton Hills has approved thecons true lion The funds will be charged back to Hills While we are naturally thinking or our own Interests primarily the increased ice costs are also affecting Minor Hockey and the Figure Skating Club both of whom have suffered some decline Into registration We have talked to some parents who simply cannot afford to have heir children play All Star hockey A Decline In All Star players will ultimately affect the Junior Hockey Club In fairness to some members of the committee we feel that we would have received no reduction from the original proposed costs had it not been for the Intervention of George Maltby and Roy Booth and we appreciate heir concern Councillor of Acton adopted an attitude of neutrality and Chairmen perhaps rightfully so If it It the aim of the Com to make money to reduce the deficit then they ore going about It the right way however they are killing Junior Intermediate and to a degree Minor League Inter town competition In the process This bother them however as they can always rent the Ice to teams from Mlssissauga or Br amp ton or Toronto or he per hour figure that has been set for out of Town groups This of course Is the Intermediates Juniors and All Star Teams ore forced into Bankruptcy Sincerely W Campbell
