the Georgetown Acton areas recently got underway and besides the normal ac tivities of crafts games and sing songs that take place on a daily basis at these playgrounds there occurs a number of Specially Planned Activities One major group of these special activities are trips Trips are usually full day affairs with the children boarding a bus at 30 a m and not retur till mid afternoon The places which the children may visit vary from year to year and this year we have decided to travel lo Bronte Crock the Royal Ontario Museum and Matineland Hopefully these places will serve the purpose of being fun exciting and a learning experience for everyone Involved Other activities which arc planned Include a Puppet Show which is particularly for those children aged five through seven and this is to take place Tuesday July 12th There is also a theatrical group Road Show Theatre who are coming from Guelph to put on a dramatic or a fairy tale for all the playground children Both the Georgetown and Acton areas have also planned area wide events which concentrate on Involving all playground sites in one major activity Acton playgrounds have decided on holding a swim meet while Georgetown sites will take part In a combined track and field meet and sdflball tournament Of course as always playgrounds in the different areas will individually bold their own weekly Special Events which usually are related lo the Individual themes of each site Although no final dedaions have been made playgrounds could not end without a finale of some type and we at playgrounds are looking forward to possibly something a little different to end what appears to bo an eventful playground leaders from 1 T a Fountain is naming a similar type of program In Acton for I Jennifer is teaching the training leaders in general terms how to discipline children child psychology leadership styles and planning a day at the playground In more specific terms she deals with games story telling drama programs lor rainy days pool orientation water games and safety first aid pari games and sing The place they II really learn is on the Job training she said because they It deal with child leader situations Recreation Karen King gave the group a run down on the recreation staff and the departments objectives and playground supervisor Smith discussed what is In in runnina a round Mrs Smith also discussed the integrated playground at Park school with children and stressed to the training leaders the Importance or treating all the children equally will receive beneficial learning insight from their exposure at the Park school and from the feedback with leaders at Park school she Mid The most difficult task a leader must acquire is the ability to understand why a child is acting out and how to react to the situation Children of different groups have different per socialities such as a child from age five seven may nave a short attention span wont be and will generally command a great deal of attention Whereas a child of seven to ID may have a strong identity for his own sex and age group may need close friends have a willingness to share and be less geared towards being the centre of attention This general classification of children raised a Tew questions and arguments among the LIT group Jennifer said because they compared these descriptions to their own brothers and sisters per that age category After discussing the different characteristics with the age group she then classified the ideal reactions of a leader enabling the leader to cope a child attitude Jennifer Is excited about the program and Is looking for ward to the group practical experience because that when she can tell bow much or the training the leaders have learned BOOKS LIMITED Sunday School
