bride This is the summer for weddings Were at the time of lite when our children and the children of our friends and relatives are of marriageable age This summer its been my niece the daughter of a friend and to my delight my aunt who has remained all these years since being widowed at the beginning f the war All weddings were different My niece chose a simple evening wedding with only close friends and family My aunt had an exquisite formal affair DONE UP BROWN But It was our friends who really did things up Theyre Italian and if youve never had the pleasure of an Italian wedding you should drop In on one just to see how its done Because they are particularly good friends we at tended the church The entire service was In the native tongue but I managed to Interpret when the priest was Kiting one of those half hour lectures on marriage and life I could tell by the eyes rolling back In the heads he was of the old school The bride is university educated and already breaking with traditional role for Italian women And then the reception to end all parties I thought I had seen it all in the movie The Godfather An entire night had been taken over the guests A full orchestra began the nights festivities by playing tally the theme song from The Godfather WHAT A FEAST And the the f began Ilostcountaftertheetahth course wine lowed like wine and the bar was courtesy of the fatherofthcbride What a way to start married I If el In our true Anglo- style we had sent a gift to the brides residence The other guests brought white envelopes to the reception and them In huge white box bedecked in flowers for Ihe occasion In return for their generosity they were treated to the biggest bash I have ever at tended Everyone was there The old men danced with each other and with children Some of them without their teeth and some of them with their straw hats NEVER SATISFIED The women were beautiful The young women were for the most part dark haired and gorgeous When I remarked upon this fact to a young secondgeneration Italian he assured me he was used to them and what he really liked were tall blonde Canadians So much for tradition Even If they like them a good percentage of boys wilt end up forsaking Ihe blonde Canadian girlfriends to marrying aa their tradition calls for Into their Italian community NEW GROUND Its a closeknit group A group of people who have worked hard since coming to this country and who dont up tradition easily This was evident as the bride walked across the street from tier residence to the church All the neighbours outside on their front verandahs to greet her and wish her well And so do I She still has much new ground to break Joyce Beaton Is editor of EARLY CANADIAN LIFE a monthly go line available for IS per year from council upholds Alike Armstrongs motion for a plebiscite to decide the library Coun Armstrong says he intends to go ahead with hit notice of motion announced at council last week because the Ontario Municipal Board decision last Wednesday called for a hearing into the proposed library site A plebiscite would be expen sive he admits but so Is a hearing Its going to cost so much for legal fees to defend the Cedarvale site at a hearing and then some residents wont be satisfied he paints out If the plebiscite is held Arm strong would like to sec three alternatives on It expansion of the present library facili ties on Church Street the construction of a new library at another site or council lake no action other than ap proved maintenance and up keep existing site Whether alt of these choices would be on the plebiscite would depend on councils decision he says They might use all of his suggestions some of them or none of them depending on the outcome of Monday nights council meeting There are some town resi dents who dont want any changes at the library he says They dont reailtc how the town has grown and they want to see the status quo maintained Armstrong says that there is no question of the own losing the old library If a new one Is built Its a beautiful building and other uses could be found for It if It ceased to be a library he says being torn down Its not another
