Canada pages is an unusual novel and In most respects a very good one It is the story of Hannah Watson who grew up in he Ottawa Valley with her father and mother and younger brother George It is the story of Hannahs vividly re membered childhood and of the changes and disintegration that he passage of time brings with It as she grows older It Is the story of people rather than events The reader will almost in evitably surmise rightly or wrongly hat much of the novelpa a rly the first and better halfIs autobio graphical But whether the actual Inci dents are based on ruth or not doesnt matter They are re lived In Hannah Watsons me mory with all he Immediacy of childhood sharply recalled The myriad of tiny details are exactly right and they are part of arsenal of a skilled writer who on growing older has not forgotten either the bliss or the poignancy of being young and remembers that the two can at times be one I must listen to myself both voices the I that was and the I that am It has come to that On my ceiling outside my window In the pulse of my being something immediate and fearful and radiant trips a trigger In my brain And In my throat there rises same cry I am here where Ive always been Forever the same cry MOVING SCENE Some scenes In Sandbars I found more memorable than others The account of her fathers and the story of his relationship wllh his mother as recounted by Mr a boyhood friend is moving If perhaps a little long In the latter part of book and on a different note is a fine description of an evening with Hannah George and Hannahs boyfriend crickan evening of which George is a part without under standing what is going on Perhaps In fact none of them GIT may rent space Finance committee recommended to council that the Georgetown Little Theatre be allowed to rent the garageboy section of the old ambulance building on James Street for a month beginning September 1 and continuing until such time as the own needs mora storage space The town is currently using former office space In he building to store records and the Red Cross Is also storing some things here as well quite understands Never once I think does he author diminish the Joy or the pathos of a scene by any artificial attempt o enhance It Hannahs fa her is leaving her mother He is talking to Hannah See that Mamma looks after herself he said again George and you between you once its time to go to the cottage theres a chance shell lake an interest In things again But what about him Didnt that matter too He would be fine he said bed find a furnished room uptown near the office he thought so he could walk to work So he could walk to work Making It sound a falr tramping along be side me surely exiled within but still the same old self refusing let anything show through nothing forced for my benefit from time to time removing his hat and shaking off he wet as If it mattered SELFCONSCIOUSNESS McFee writes very well indeed when she Is letting herself go In some powerfuly imagined or recalled pas sage but at time she seems to me overly aware of her liter ary skill The best prose is not that which makes the reader pause to admire a carefully polished metaphor or marvel at a scin tillating simile Such writing skills should heighten the readers awareness without drawing his attention to he skill of their writer How could I know then hat tears certain tears un like time and change moving on could stay wrapped up Inside you like something trussed you feel wanting to get out Though understanding why In Hannah Watsons roving recollection one early me mory may often lead her to recall a later one and a later one may often bring Into her mind an early incident some readersI confess to being one or hemmay find the lack of chronology confusing at times There may be some too who feel the novel la a little too monochromatic and that Ihe splashes of color ore them selves muted as though seen through a light mist Perhaps the mist is that of time I wouldnt push this criticism too far Many of the early childhood memories and of the Inter ones ore as I have said sharp and brightly lit All In all Sandbars is an admirable piece of work and many of us will look forward to he remaining three novels at he promised quartet Richard Gordon whose most went novel The Lady Woo oved New York live In iummeriand BC Thomson Newsservice Horseshoeing Hot or Cold John Halko Financing of firehall Finance committee decided Monday evening to recom mend that council finance the addition to the Acton Fire Hall by using general town levies grants and Esqueslng capital reserve funds Despite sharp comments from Ward councillor Roy Booth to the effect that It Is foolish to spend money on debt charges when the council has money In the bank that it could use to pay for the project the committee agreed with town treasurer Ray King that they shouldnt spend money on the fire ball which they bare alio- for something else Councillor Booth pointed out that the town has lot levies set aside for the new Georgetown library which wont be used this year because the Ontario Municipal Board has stalled the project temporari ly It Is contention this money should be used for the fire hall and replaced with lot levies from the GarUidale Belman Four Seasons and projects all of which are scheduled to begin con struction next year Mr King said he felt using the money which has been designated for library will weaken Ihe towns position when they go to the OMB hearing Nor will It do their reputaUon any good If they had to go to the or lure approval later on some other project be said He pointed out that the has already approved worth of debentures for the fire hall addition and reminded the committee that having that approval does not automatical ly mean that they must be from the sale of land 18483 issued from the Esqueslng Capital Ward 1 councillor Peter reserve fund and from Marks made the molion that munlcipol incentive grants the committee endorse the
