people in the program would like see a volunteer corps set up to help with such things as driving people to doctor appointments or to lake people shopping or visiting The reason so many of our people don get out Is because of the lousy transportation system here Mrs Stephens said The taxis will give senior citizens a discount if they travel in a group But when someone wants to go out alone it gels expensive They can give someone a discount Just because they are a senior citizen Our function is supportive one we like to see our clients remain independent she said So many people are about not being able to look after themselves Mrs Stephens said Canada Is very backward In the way it looks after Its senior citizens Families prefer not to have their parents living with them for whatever reason Many of them don t qualify for Victorian Order of Nurses assistance Mrs Stephens said But you re only entitled VON for so long and what do you do then The Helping Hand program was originally funded by LIP grants When the grants stopped the province and the municipality took over the major portion per cent of the funding with the rest coming from the United Way or local service organization Most of the clients pay for the services they receive since thy feel most com that way But the payment Is geared to their ability to pay Recently we sent around a letter asking people what work they wanted done so we could set up a schedule for anyone who volunteered Mrs Stephens said That lady said I would like to have done my windows myself but since I turned B0 I Just haven t felt comfortable getting up on a ladder The Helping Hand program not only provides services for senior citizens but for the handicapped as well whether the handicap is permanent or temporary Mrs Stephens said that a lot of their clients suffer from multiple sclerosis We can lose sight of the fact that were begging for volunteers Mrs Stephens said The work is seasonal and the program Is covered by liabilities If I got ten male volunteers I could put them to work right now she said The women who work for the program domestic engineers are paid a salary The women are professional women
