Judo Club has been run here for the past one and a half years and is registered with the Ontario Judo Black Belt Association Oliver Reynolds who has been Involved in judo for 13 years teaches members at Acton High School on Tuesday nights Bill Canadian Heavyweight Champion for the past ears and who has a block belt has also been in Acton to assist Reynolds Although judo which in Ja means gentle way may took like a sport to outsiders it Is unusual that you find injuries If you get an injury its your own fault you werent prepared or you didnt fall right said Reynolds never blame the person who made the throw One of the reasons Reynolds thinks serious injuries are so rare in judo is that the first thing new students learn Is how to fall without being hurl Falling is one the most things they will learn and can also be applied to other sports such as skiing There arc basically two of judo recreational judo and competitive judo Competitive style judo is completely different from recreational style judo The Acton Ilatashita Club practices mainly recreational judo although five members were entered in a competition in Toronto The members did quite well coming home with a second third and two fourth place finishes There are six levels of skill in judo ranging from a white belt the lowest up to a black belt The black belt Itself also has seven levels of difficulty within the category Reynolds is a first degree block belt the lowest within the block belt He there is no special school one must attend order to be allowed to teach judu all black bells are to teach Every bell lec has a amount of know ledge and skill that must be mastered before a belt is granted There is a written exam which must be passed This examination includes Japanese J Some people art orange belts for three yearn others for three months said Reynolds Compared to the judo clubs in Toronto where Reynolds lias also taught Acton is a small club We usually gel kids out There are no adults taking judo instruction in Aclon as there are in Toron to where mixed classes of adults and children per in arc not uncommon Reynolds feels the small dais sue helps students more skills it a faster pace Although club members at taught in the same This way the kids tan learn some skills above their belt level and it will be easier for them later when they move up says Reynolds The clubs small size
