Rough road to council seat for Marilyn Herald editor For Hal ton Hills ward four town councillor Marilyn one of the few v omen incol municipal history me road into politics was not entirely smooth In fact the biggest bump she was being defeated in her initial bid for a council seat back in the 1970 election Mrs came third losing by a fruslratlngly slim 100 vote margin to Peter Morns and Mike Armstrong I was disappointed but the people I was running against were wellknown Bui when you come bo close you always think if you worked harder you might Shortly after the election Mr Morrow whs appointed chair man of the Ho I ton regional council and Mr Armstrong was bumped up Into the vacant word four regional council scat Mrs Serjeantson assumed that has on her third place finish she would be appointed to Till councillor Armstrong vacated area council scat there was precedent for the move however council decided in stead to open nominations and hold a byelection for the ward four scot only three months after the initial elect Ion It seemed inconsistent to appoint the regional councillors and not the area councillors Im sure that part of the reason was that I was a unman and not that well known she says Mrs ScrjeanlsonsayBshe was anile vocal in her objections to the byelection being held and she received significant public support She says she receive many phone calls and letters expressing support for her ap pointment However council re mained firm in calling for the by election but in the end Mrs Serjeantson was elected by la motion when no candidates came forward to oppose her She says she knew of some people who had considered run nlng in the but she thinks that the public response to he election kept some dates from coming forward She says that while her band was very supportive or her initial run far council be thought she was little crazy to try again in a bytlcclion Mrs Serjeantson political career is running liltle smooth these days and she was cleanly elected In Hie November municipal elections last year finishing second to Harry Levy comfortably ahead of Karen Morris Mrs sajs she first considered running for council Hills town councillor says she finds being a council member a challenge An recreation enthusiast fulltlmc mother bee iU5c first it seemed like no one from our end of the ward was running I was concerned about number of issues includ the Metcalfe ravine and the sewage plant and 1 t getting answers from people to the questions I was So finally the weekend be fore nominations closed I de cided to run I looked on it as a challenge Mrs Serjeantson says that probably her biggest surprise upon becoming a councillor was the slowness with which council operated Things just be done overnight and if go there wanting to things over night it can be frustrating To be on council at a time when money is so retrained is also very frustrating She says her proudest a enlevement since becoming a councillors is her contribution to getting lie Metcalfe ravine up ItlTTOIIONTO Mrs Serjeantson is not a of Georgetown but like of her neighbours In the area she and her husband mated here to buy a house back in Mr is of market gardening near the city Itself Canadians may be fighting to gel of apartments but in Australia apartments are main ly rcnled by the elderly or those wanting to get out of the work involved In keeping up a house or by who can yet afford a house of their own she Like Canada Australia has had inflation problems The Australian government how ever has managed to get the rate down to around assort men of recreation tics People In the area may recognize Mrs as the woman who jogs daily down In fict Mrs Serjeantson says she used a jogging picture of herself in her election campaign undoubtedly her being a woman made things little more difficult at least initially MORI- 10LDIY Obviously I m not considered one of the boys she says At times she has also had lo speak a more loudly to he heard or taken seriously but she soys once other councillors got used to her her being a woman became less of a problem Although the municipal were almost three months ago Mrs Serjeantson council has yet lo really get going We arc still In limbo right now but we should get going soon I m looking forward to that Mrs Serjeanlsan soys a top priority for the new council has to be the develop ment of industrial land within the town She says a roadblock to this development now is the high price many area landown ers ore charging or lands zoned industrial The town will have lo consider other sites for Indus trial land zoning she says Ft MINUTES Although there have only been a few council meetings since the new term began Mrs Serjeant son says There are a certain amount inings Doing done outside council She so councillors ore some times given the impression lhat they are only hall the discussion of issue and that the real discussion may have taken place before the meeting To moke council work Ihings have to be little more open to feel like we are all working She is hopeful thai ihe annual budget making process will help unify the council And what of her future Mrs Serjeantson says she will likely run for council again She would consider taking a slab at region council seat but lhat would depend on who the other And mayor No I don t think will ever run Tor
