they go all ihe way to Canadians wherever arc thats where I be Bono said MADE FRIENDS I made awful lot of good friends through hockey club and I have some great memories The trainer said his fondest memories revolve around the playoffs team has been in Every playoff series was great he said Even last year when we got knocked off by was great said that each of the learns he has been with has had a special flavour about The Raiders have some he said and leaving it behind Is going be tough When Gord Miller of Georgetown started his season last summer playing for the Guelph Oaks intercity mens team he had no idea his efforts would lead to the dreams of many a- young man a chance to play In the big time The Toronto Metros of the North American Soccer Lea thought enough of Miller to draft him in the third round at the recent North American soccer draft held in New York City To be drafted at all Is an achievement but to be draft ed that high and ahead of three All Americans demon strales what ability hard work and desire can do Being drafted came as a complete surprise to Gord who did not even know he was being watched by scouts All he was working for was the possibility of getting a scholarship to university ROUNTREE HELPED How the whole thing hap pened makes for a truly interesting story Miller told this reporter Mr Jim whoat the time was the defensive scout for the Toronto Argo nauts football club waa a neighbour and we used to talk about various types of sports Miller is an all round athlete at and the point came with only showing on Ihe first period clock The Merchants took i lead for second time in the game early in the second Big Bruce Walters let a blast go from the top of the t left circle which beat Peter Barry Mar II tinelll and Woods drew the assists on the play DALEY TALLIES The Raiders came back once more to tie the score as Daley tallied a marker midway through the second period The goal came right after Daley had been released he cannot even remember a prolonged per iod of bad limes None of the years have been turn When asked to name the best player he has seen in a Haider uniform said he admired way Mike and Bill Currie played and play ihe game and John has had the mosl heart and desire of any player he has seen in Raider Red The Raider hockey club will not be officially saying goodbye until the end of season but the years of him In ping sore limbs and catering lo egos ended when he lolly took aver his new duties out west last week conversations always in eluded soccer I asked Mr if he knew of anyone who could give me Information on scholarships to American universities It happened that Mr knew a very prominent man In the soccer world in the person of J I Albrecht head scout of Toronto Metros was at one time the head scout for the Toronto Argonauts apparently checked with his scouts in the Guelph League and found out that they rated me a very high prospect Miller con eluded The final outcome was lhat Miller received a telegram from New York advising him of the draft Two or three days later Gord had a telephone call from and was particular ly concerned about Gord continuing his education Mr Albrecht reassured that if things work out for him at Torontos training camp and Gord made the team the Metros would sign him to an amateur card allowing Gord eventually play at the university level and at the same time put aside money to pay Continued or Page from the Res- made a couple of saves but a scramble ensued and Daley put It home Both and McDuffe made excellent saves throughout the middle frame lo limit their respective op ponents to one goal apiece made big slops oil the sticks of Peter Sturgeon Ray Tonelli and within seconds of one McDuffe made good saves on Al Woods and McKenna during a Merchant power play The Merchants look the lead for Ihe fourth lime of the game midway through ihc final minutes Wayne Smith beat McDuffc on a play set up by Herd Right after that goal Duffe made what might have been the biggest save of the game as he beat Bill on a breakaway had just stepped out of the penalty The third Raider goal was very similar to Ihe second one as it resulted from a scramble in front of ihc net This time It was who put it home with Twiss and assisting With only remaining to be played the Raiders took the lead for the first time in the game on what wa the night prettiest goal MARKER It came on the power play After the Raiders threw the puck around for awhile Twiss passed it to Gordon parked to the side of the Merchant net also earned an assist on the goal The Merchants did not throw In the towel as they fought back lo notch the score with only showing on the clock McDuffe made a good save off the stick of but the puck went to point to Joe who blasted it pass ed the netminder Brian Jones and Marty Hay assist ed then took two tries to beat to give the Raiders win and first place Steve Blundy and John Boyce assisted The Raiders have not lost game since the Collingwood Shipbuilders defeated them here on December NOT BALANCED However in recent weeks the scoring has not been as balanced as it was during November and December The line of Kudrasovs Tonelli and Gordon has been handling the bulk of the teams scoring Pat Moloney who was one point burning up the league has been having his problems finding the twine as regularly to recent games although he did score the winner In overtime in Dun- line of Ray Evans Tom Djley and has up Inglis and none of the three have been scoring any consistency There were one ol the best lines In the league last year Terry Porter a rookie wllh an abundance of talcnl also has not been scoring lately Sturgeon who no less an authority than said would bum up this league has yet to perform lo his potential All Ihe mentioned players have the capabilities of sew ing goals and come playoff lime they will have to take the heat off and Gordon if the Raid are lo go all the way Raiders manager heads west There will be a very big hole left in the Georgetown Raider Hockey Club after 111 Li season when Reg Benoit leaves this area for good for a new lob in Calgary who has been with the team since 1972 season actually Is serving in no specific capacity with Ihe club now but he will be of the gomes He started his new position last week Ills family Is still in Georgetown and Benolt ret urns here every weekend Once just could not refuse the offer he said II a belter deal financially and its a step up ladder with company said he hopes be following the Raiders throughout rest of Ihis year as a fan Intermediate standings The Cougars had their best week of their Inaugural season in Intermediate A League as they Owen Sound and lost a narrow decision to Port Elgin The Cougars have won only one other game all Season and are mired in cellar of Ihe northern division Standings In spile of their porous record Ihey ore guaranteed a playoff spot Their showings last week may serve as notice that they may not be a complete push over once the playoffs roll around The way the playoff system works in the north Is the first place team faces the fourth place team in the first round and the second meets the third The Cougars will have face the first place Col ling wood Shipbuilders in the first round An upset in that scries could only be compared with say The Colorado Rockies knocking off the Montreal Canadlens in a series Its possible but not very likely However even that comparison would not have been valid before the Cougars good showing last week In Ihc southern division The Thorold Athletics got off a staling start this season but fizzled as it wore on The Athletics have come alive again as they won in a row week The win by a narrow score came over the hapless Fort Erie Mavericks The Georgetown Raiders own first place in the south with a narrow onepoint edge over the Merchants The Raiders have beaten the Merchants twice in the last I wo weeks Collingwood Port Elgin Owen Sound Georgetown Gordon has been an absolute terror lately In Friday night win over the Merchants he had two goals Kudrasovs has a big lead in Ihc southern division teams but there are a few players in the northern loop very close The leader up north is Don of the Shipbuilders who has goals and assists for points His goals is the highest In the league with and Barclay of Owen Sound lied for second wilh each In the assists department defenseman Steve Sly of Shipbuilders has for a his lead In he goals against has an excellent chance to capture Hie which goes annually the team which allows the least goals The Shipbuilders have allowed goals in games for a very respectable SB goals against average Second in that department is the Raiders They have allowed goals in games for a average The Raiders Mario
