presented and reasonable ours sine ere l Young Terra Michael Hollett Herald editor Photo finish in election race With this week paper there are only 13 days left in this seemingly endless federal election campaign and the local hopefuls now rounding the corner and heading directly for the homestretch burlier in he campaign I called for an extremely tight finish In the Brampton Georgetown riding between Conservative candidate John and Liberal Ross Milne The campaign has done little to change my opinion 1 would only amend my earlier prediction to say that candidate Moulton will likely finish higher than I predicted although it would still take a lot for him to nab top IlinllSCilOO WINS he was Inle off the mark seems to be conducting a well though cautiously received campaign Of the two high school voles conducted after all candidates meetings has won one and finished second in the Now obviously the voting patterns of than a thousand high students does not give a in of how this riding will vote But it does indicate that is capable or swaying the voters and at least is getting a hearing a little more so than had thought Another surprise from the candidate is that he Is winning the Georgetown and district lawn sign war Lawn signs are significant because it takes a pretty major commitment from a voter to let his or her neighbours know how they arc voting erecting a sign In terms of this type of committed vote is far and away ahead in town SUPPORT supporters insists that their supporters are a Utile more timid and less likely to post the Tory blue on their front lawn This Is probably true and would explain why McDermid is distant second In the local lawn sign battle If the Tory supporters arc shy Liberal Ross Milne s local fans must be downright timid The familiar red and white are few and far between in town at least on local lawns Both Milne and McDermid ore big on posting huge campaign signs on public property While these signs do not represent any major base of support two dedicated campaign workers can blanket a town with them they an very effective surprised me at least a little so far in the campaign it been loss Milne apparent lack of support locally OPINION POLLS I can only base this opinion on feedback I get from his opponents workers the subdued of Milne workers with local residents and a few other tricks of the trade It probably at scientific as the highly touted opinion polls that are forever being trolled out during election campaigns Bui It does seem thai he incumbent MP is having his troubles selling his message to Georgetown voters The town is a new addition to Milne riding which includes his old constituency of Brampton While it safe to say thai Milne has a significant base in Brampton at the very least because of his thorough constituency work he have to make major inroads locally if he hopes to return lo Ottawa But the big factor in Brampton Georgetown riding remains the ever present undecided vote All three can seem agree that this will be a difficult lo predict because of the undecided voles No one feels con I dent enough to boast about any solid power base or to a sweeping victory May And that mean lhat a good chunk of the area voters are still sizing up the candidates are still up for grabs It seems Moulton McDermid and Milne have their work cut out for them Watch for a photo finish STANDBY GOOF Saw on amusing sight earlier this week A downtown shopper had committed the old standby goof locking her keys In her car while she headed off to shop When she returned and discovered her mistake Jeff Fletcher of Fletchers Shoes along with our own Tony and oftcrowned karate champion Bill were ready to lend a hand They attacked the car with coat hangers fly swatters and an of evil looking wire implements which they hoped 10 slip in the window and lift open the lock After good half hour of poking at the car with their wires it was decided that attacking from the rear was the only hope The car was a type of hatchback and the forgetful shopper had held on to her trunk key But It was not to be an easy victory because once Hie trunk was open the crew were still unable to budge the back seat out of way decided to llttlp his karate prowess to work and drop kicked the back seat out the way To the editor of the Herald I am writing this letter to ve fuuiher support to the idea of combined library and cultural centre in Georgetown The fact that our present librarj is wholly inadequate is obvious to all who usi it One need only visit a library in a town of comparable size such as Milton to have this opinion reinforced That spacious bright facility has all that lacks ample space for the material necessary for its population study carrels reading areas meeting rooms an a children section that would invite any child to pick up a book and look throLch 1 To solve problem has been suggested lhat the present building be renovated One problem others however would not be dealt with by this measure and that islhelacko- s any mother small children tow she feels walking two or three blocks in the winter to get to story hour Our present building was designed as a church A new building designed to meet the needs a modem library Is a must library no longer solely provides a book lending service People hove mr S time than In the past The must be helped in ihilr of recreational activities and hobbies in order to spend this time in a con way I feel thai a library and a cultural centre must join forces to supply incentives direction in formation and the opportunity for people to develop their Interests to the fullest extent Combining ihe two facilities will ensure that they com plement one another by providing maximum use of both facilities without duplicating services Signed Mary Hughes Misunderstandings noted 1 flu Herald in wnling you in rsxnst 1 renew Mat filth Sell rmfByi appeared in this paper We Hi lhat wis given Hie has been idkm by Ms
