Page 30 THE HERALD Wednesday October Sports Editor Pennant drive good topic Talking sports Is one of the best opening topics of one con find More interesting than the weather and safer than politics or religion Unfortunately the top sports topic of the past several weeks the Montreal Expos bid for the pennant suffered a set back this week when they were eliminated from the race as of Sunday Being relegated to the number two spot now what happened to the Expos it has left open several possibilities as the top sports story of the week It is my job as editor to come up with that number one Item of interest that is on the lips of every sports fan this week A difficult task to say the least whan you survey the week in sports nonetheless one that must be done Someone or something must take precedence over the others to gain top billing Take your choice Several newsworthy topics spring to attention in my mind Two young girls can t play hockey with the boys in unorganized hockey league but they con and do play other sports with boys at school Carolyn a ten yearold girl who was voted the most valuable player in a boys league lost year and Alison Irvine who has a smile that would melt any young male hockey player are not being allowed to play with the boys for any apparent reason other than a constitution which says so The hockey executive here in Georgetown who can make or break change that constitution dont seem too willing to do so having voted over a week ago not to let the girls play However they have agreed to final discussion on the subject Sunday Oct at the Gordon arena during their regular meeting open to the public Sound like shades of womens liberation It may work Recently a woman signed with the Indianapolis Pacers or the National Basketball league Weekend story Or another big story could be the Junior B Gemini getting a point on the weekend It is a major step towards rebuilding the club after last years disastrous season They have some returnees from Inst year and a few new faces which are making for a good early season team Another highlight of the week Is good attendance the Gems received Sunday night at their first home game More than spec tors enjoyed a thrilling game bet the Gems and the Acton Sabres Granted some were from Acton but only about or so Also vicing for top sports coverage are the Raiders Intermediate A team They head into yet another season as defending champions of the Ontario Hockey Association OHA league The team has had plenty of practice through more than a month of training camp and games There ire some new faces and some old Si Blundy stepped up from player to coach this The Raiders signed some new talent from the International Hockey League and seem to be the spark an old established winner needs to keep them winning and not complacent something they wilt no doubt have no trouble being in this years new and improved league Possible winner One possible winner would have been Alex Dona former assistant manager at the North Hal ton Golf and Country Club Ho was to have driven in the Atlantic series of the Montreal Grand Prix on the weekend Regretfully his car backed out at the last minute before another could be obtained It would have been nice to have our photographer Peter Post who was sent to cover the race send back a snapshot of and ViUcneuve These are just a few suggestions For the answer to what all sports fans in Georgetown will be talking about turn back a page to this weeks Sports Week cover These girls want to play By MARK Sports editor Alison Irvine and Carolyn just want to play hockey dont care where or with whom Their parents and local minor hockey officials do them play hockey with boys The Georgetown and District Minor Hockey Associations members executive voted a week ago Sunday not to allow theguIs to play Major Atom staling that if they want to play they must piny with the Intermediate girls team a team comprised of girls from nine up to Pat Stewart president of the says their constitution makes provision for girls hockey and that if the parents of the two girls wish to appeal they can do so Oct Pat Grasby Carolyns mother says this constitutes discrimination and says definitely that she and Alisons parents will be at the regular league meeting that Sunday to voice their objections and hope to change the ruling in the constitution Were going to give it a try saysMrs of other boys who played with them last year on the Minor Atom team So if it helps okay If not they just have to play girls hockey Pat Stewart told the Herald this week that I got no more to say about It The two girls ployed with the boys last year in the Minor Atom house league because Alison wasnt old enough to play with the intermediate girls and Carolyn was given special permission to play by last years minor hockey president Bob Davis Carolyn was voted the most valuable player In her league Inst year Concerns on behalf of the hockey association are that girls will be more readily prone to injury when playing with tougher and more skilled competition To this the parents of the two girls claim playing with boys their own age and ability is safer than playing with older and bigger girls in the intermediate hockey A league vote over the weekend wouldnt ban bod checking in teams In an earlier case where a young girl Gall Cummlngs had her plight taken up by the Ontario Human Rights Commission It was recently ruled by the Ontario Supremo Court that girls cannot play hockey with boys Duke Smith who coaches the Intermediate girls team says once was the day when there was no girls team but I think they have just as much fun If col more playing with the girls Rob Alisons father says this Is not such a big town that we have to follow the letter of the law Its common sense If you can compete and contribute you deserve he option to play Alison had three goals and many assists Inst year against the boys The controversy In the meantime the two young hockey players are practicing with the intermediate girl while their parents and local hockey executives try to straighten out the matter and best accommodate he girls desires to play Would you want your ion
