the number presented Dear Liar reviewed Artistic success deserves acclaim ByPAULDOHSFY mi Editor Actors Glen and Florence Connor faced some Inadvertent competition sound wise during Monday night a preview of Dear liar which formally debuts tonight Wednesday at Knox Church hall With the Choral Society rehearsing for its forthcoming concert in the heavens above us as it were and a bunch of scouts rambunctious ly pursuing some merit badges down the hall the basement studio where is present ing this semi professional play absorbed some unusual noises never encountered by play wright Jerome Kilty not to knock the Choral Society of course what we heard downstairs Start your evening of TV entertainment with Cable 4 Presenting your community nights week Tutsday to Friday Call us for details at sounded great but thats another review end Dear Liar director Nicholas assured me there be no such distractions during the play performances Friday through Sunday and again the weekend after The various noises from afar in fact actually served to accentuate two major strengths in the play the dynamics of Kilty writing and effortless talent of the two Bra malca based actors It could also be construed Monday that choir music above initially challenged Glen Florence as they walked to make their soft spoken introductions to the play later yielded to their own raucous shouting as their characters or George Bernard Shaw and Shaw s actress friend Stella Campbell bicker loudly over Pygmalion and finally melded wonderful if accidentally with Dear Liars action Solemn melancholy voices filtered through the ceiling during a moving scene in which Mrs Campbell attempts to accept the fact of her son death in the war Al WAYS CLEVER But given the anticipated absence or these noises for the balance of the presentation all this is beside the point At hand instead is the frequently humorous some times tragic and invariably clever twoact play brought to life in theatrehumble George town by Nicholas Connor and thanks overall to administrator Enid Williams the ploy producer the challenge posed by Studio theatre on a shoestring budget and promise through their dynamic performances to delight audiences at Nornlc seven night engagement of Dear Liar The play formally debuts tonight at Knot Church En Georgetown and continues throughout this weekend and next Herald photo ioruiKiiiriKss admirably workable level design the true story of how Shaw and Campbell came to love one another work together onstage and communicate in letters to years makes Tor some rivet ting theatre From the symbolic exchange of bundled letters which launches the play action through the personal tragedies of Shaw mother death Is absolutely stunning as he describes her cremation tears flowing down his cheeks and Campbell son s demise on the battlefield to the passing of Mrs Campbell herself the play is a veritable roller coaster ride of the emotions These tragic highlights which reaffirm life as real s tragedies do arc uniquely balanced by Kilty against outrageous dialogue between Shaw and Campbell drawn from the eternally witty letters which bonded the two through out their respective careers Mrs Pal as she came to be known to a generation of British theatregoers berates Shaw for his literary misdemeanors and expresses her love for his letters of longing each one she says a carnival of words The couples selfdefensive boasts regarding their own skills weave gracefully amid frequent and frank admissions of undying toe for one another They enter a prolong debate on the
