Ballinaf WEEKEND EXTRA Friday July Page I Fond farewell Trends change but the Stiles were right for us By SMITH 1 1 era Id Many worshippers came out to church Sunday to hear the farewell sermon of Rev Stiles who has been the minister In for the past eight The ladles and mens choirs were both out in full force to musical selections for this special Sunday The Junior Choir under the direction of Bob did a marvel lous job as they started off with an appropriate anthem The ladies and mens choir sang together their selection was I Know Who Holds Tomorrow Just previous to Iho sermon the mens choir song Precious Memories Both were a joy to listen to Mr Stiles started his sermon by saying there are two mons difficult for a minister to give as he lakes over a new charge his first and his last Ilia first one in must hove been good but surely his last one will stand out in the memory of the congregation If spoke on A Fourdimen sional Faith He said there are many remembrances of faith support and friendship which he can recall during the years of his ministry here one of the highlights being the 100th anniversary of the Church celebrated hi May The closing hymn was Blest Bo the Tie That Binds Those who could not stay for lunch that followed the service said farewell to Mr and Mrs Silica at the door of the Sanctuary as they left for home Most however stayed or lunch and the presentations their bike to aid in Identific ation Even If there Is no serial number he invites the kids to bring their bikes in and the police will put their social Insurance number on It With proper Speyside residents treatment at hearing disturbs NECs Roy Booth Continued from Page 1 unique wildlife micro climate The absence of some other common plant species abound in Ha I ton indica te that the forest has been basically tampered with by man since the the Ice Age Adhering strictly with the letter of the law hearing officer Shrives ensured that evidence presented on the Standard proposal dealt speci fically with the companys plans for the property and discouraged questions which attempted to assess farther reaching effects the proposal would have Because of the limited area to which questions could be posed without being ruled out of order resident Jean Foils found it difficult to coresexamine some of Stand ards evidence In a letter to Premier Bill Davis published in last weeks Herald Mrs Falls sharply criticized Mr Shrives Inter ruptions to her questioning which she said eventually red uced her to tears Like other residents living almost next door to the scd quarry Mrs Falls Is concerned about effects on her water supply which the dig ging and possibly blasting may have as well as the effect of noise and dust on the area surrounding the Standard pro perly NOT NEC As a town and regional councillor Mr Booth was especially concerned about the way Mrs Fail was treated at the hearings and he stressed 1 that the hearing officers are functioning entirely as from the NEC I was quite disturbed my self at the manner with which the hearing officers treated her Coun Booth said adding that Mrs Falls questions about adjoining lands could have been asked if they had been worded properly Although he maintained that Mr Shrives was absolutely correct in adhering to the letter of the law confining questions specifically to the site Coun Booth said there was no reason for the hear ing officer a curtness Despite the tension and oc casional bitterness which part icularly flared up during the Standard Aggregate sessions Hills lawyer Tom And erson reported to the towns general committee meeting last week that opponents of the companys proposal fared well against Standards astute law yer Burton and the companys wellprepared study While not knowing what Standards case would entail the town working closely with Hal ton Region Conservation Authority lawyer Bert Arnold was able to effectively use a report from Dillon Consultants as well as statements from other experts The hearing officers decis ion is of paramount import ance to local planners Even though their approval of the Standard proposal would only be the first step before quarry ing actually begins eventually the company Would have to appear before a Pits and Quarries hearing for a permit to start digging the final designation of the land in the escarpment plan would super cede other designations propo sed in regional and town plans Therefore neither municip al level would have much to say except possibly at the Pits and Quarries hearing about developing the property and road access to It Coun Booth roughly estima ted that it could take another four years before Ihe Niagara Escarpment plan finally bee- law There are more hearings planned volumes of Information to condense for reports and hours of study ahead for the hearing officers Nevertheless new quarry ing and gravel operations will have to wait for the final plan before they can begin This alone would be or some consolation to residents living on the escarpment except that there are no assurances that the provinces continuing de mand for construction mater ial near Ihe Toronto area wont railroad the plan to a hasty selfserving conclusion There Is already consider able suspicion that the provin ces transport ministrys plans to widen and strengthen High way presupposes that more aggregate operations will be opening in this area of the escarpment and that trucks will need a better route to get them to the construction sites the Dump Two ladies were over heard chatting Whenever Im down in the dumps 1 get
