la helping to make sure that accidents such as what happened to the Port Hope private school canoeing expedition at Lake Timiskaming will not be repeated After the tragic canoeing accident In In which a number of boys were drowned after their canoes tipped In the cold and windy conditions of a training program was established the government began the year after the Timiskaming accident and for the post three years has reached a fairly expansive audience In Ontario Canoeing demonstrations are held all over Ontario in a mobile unit which travels to parks camps and private groups spreading the word of safety and common sense to those keen to learn about proper canoeing techniques Free demonstrations are taught by two University students from an Experience summer program sponsored by the Ontario government and Canoe Ontario to stress the safety aspects of canoeing as well teaching their classes how to paddle and portage a canoe By the water edge at BeUountain park last Saturday morning a small crowd of avid canoeists listened and participated In a two hour presentation about water travel MASS AUDIENCE One of the main goals of the program according to Instructor Rob Hang a University of Toronto Ed is to educate as many people possible Strickland a second year Ed student at the University of Western Ontario says their demonstrations can only Introduce beginners to the art canoeing and if they want to further their proficiency many avenues are available For example the Ontario Recreational Canoe Affiliation offers program and projects to improve canoeing skills They will also teach lessons and hold clinics for beginners A typical day for Shauna and Rob is busy They often put an one demonstration in the morning and then off to another park or group for an
