Georgetown and District YMYWCA in particular impress us more and more with the nature of their summer undertakings their accessibility and their worth to the community Except for the kids themselves newspaper reporters get the best look at the summer youth programmes in action and to be sure those photogenic children in their wild specialevent costumes and frantic activities provide us with plenty of great photos each year But clearly the benefits to the community as a whole deserve the ap plause and continued support of all citizens During the past three years Halton Hills has seen its recreation department develop summer programmes to a level worthy of any major city The Music Arts and Drama MAD programme has evolved from a freewheeling kin dergartenstyle concept into an ex citing array of special events and educational courses that culminate with a colorfully ambitious childrens parade Tot Lot and the touring Playmobile show the department making the best possible use of its own facilities and those of the Halton Board of Education and theyre just the beginning The Georgetown summer ac tivities enjoy enormous popularity of their own but rather than stealing the rec departments thunder the twin programmes seem to mesh year after year Kinder fun and similar programmes for preschoolers are a summer blessing for young parents as well as an excellent pastime for the small fry Then theres the town libraries which we like to think have done more for amalgamating Acton and Georgetown as they should be than virtually any other group or agency in Halton Hills The Georgetown library has put up with cramped quarters this summer while the arts complex is being built but its made economic use of the space provided in Guelphview Square by Rex Heslop Associates and puts on some great shows at the Park gym Between these two sites and the scenic Acton public library bounce another wideranging series of kids events from special onetime shows by semiprofessional performers to casual gatherings of likeinterested kids over the course of the summer The libraries have given us at very little cost Christmas in July blowing contests a sum mer reading club weird collections gobs of glue and pots of paint dazzling colors and even more dazzling smiles on the faces of young participants Surely all these groups and some we may have overlooked for the moment have done a great deal for Hills and continue to boost their annual contribution Were happy to see public facilities being used during the summer doldrum months were glad so many young teenagers are fin ding summer work while developing leadership potential and were always delighted to see busy happily conten ted youngsters Improving on summer vacation is pretty hard to do but we feel these three dally And while there was nothing Improper In way our federal MPs voted themselves a hefty pay Increase there was a sleazy tinge to the way theywemaboutlt The fact that such a selfserving piece of legislation could race through Parliament without any one knowing its total cos I or appearing to give a hoot does nothing to enhance the reputation of the House of Commons or the Senate And he legislation was Introduced only after there had been marathon behind scenes negotiations a virtual conspiracy to eliminate opposition This would never occur with any other type of bill And then here was the timing The legislation was pushed through with its retroactive provisions Just before MPs took off on a threemonth summer recess MORE SLEAZE Again on a bout of Insomnia among political watchers But there were other sleazy events happening at the same time the most notable of which was the Coutts Affair Now its one thing for Jim Coutts as Prime Minister Trudeaus principal secretary to seek a seat In but its quite another thing for to create the opening the way he did In order to let Coutla run In he Toronto riding of the prime minister appointed the sitting MP to Ihe Senate thereby subjecting the good people of to an absolutely unnecessary electoral exercise who reached the age of without distinguishing himself in Parliament is no more deserving of a Senate appointment has a vested interest white another la partisan Richard Johnston West gave a classic example of how It works during debate here before a legislative committee which was looking at TV Ontario stricken
