beginnings The Herald approached Joan to relate the lory of our gymnastics pro gram In Ilalton Hills and how It began Mrs was a found member of the gymnast program In Georgetown and Acton The following is her recollection of the club and the promise she sees or future development Jennifer Pepper flips In the air on the low beam In practice week Jennifer and Gail Cook are two veterans on the Jilts who the team looks up to became of their hard work and their excellent performances at Ontario qualifying gymnastics meets Herald photo The first meeting I con recall organize gymnast in Hills was in June 197G when Jim Monlgo and myself called together all interested parents in the area from Ihc Recreation Department was Just her Job as the lion fresh out of university and she was full of My idea or a program that lime was gymnastics for all in Hills In July the Recreation Department If I would take the job of gymnastic supervisor and get Ihc programs off Ihc ground Ihls time had very few trained coaches with Mario Gymnastics Federa lion OGM level training With level three from York University had Ruth and Jane Aggiss Cindy Douglas and Jennifer Linton Because we planned set Ihcprogran system this meant in both Georgetown and COACHES The Krudwichs were very qualified coa from Erin ihcy handled the George town Inlcrmediate program Jennifer and June look the beginner program In Acton At the lop of the pyramid thin was to be the elite gymnasts or girls thai were looking for more training Wcadicrliscd try outs and had over GO girls out but we were only able to take into Ihc club which left many girls disappointed However Ihe remaining girls wort o fit into the Inter mediate program In either Georgetown or During Ibis time a parent executive was formed and the club wis Ihc under liic Rills The first yelp all worked on On pre competitive basis four hours a week while girls still had to travel to compete Thai year the first invitatio nal meet was held In George own which was a success The Spring of that we decided the club was ready to a competitive group Ruth look over as the head coach while Jennifer Linton became the prccompctitive head coach Mats were purchased as well as bars and a new padded beam The competitive club started on an eight hour program at the Rose Room and four hours at he George own high school The Jail of we hosted gymnastic clinics and the gave a level one coaching clinic the clinic many school teachers Interested parents and older gymnasls were able to take the course which certainly strengthen the program in he area The of 1977 Pepper look the Begin ner and Inlcrmediate program Janice Armstrong Ihc program and Judy Ihc programs This put us a lerj strong position lo work pyramid system to develop along gymnasts Aggiss Eva Dave Deere and Maureen McGowan were all able to get Ictcl 1 both and theory this Kim displays a grace form during her floor routine exercise Although the Jills don have access to a targe floor a regular basis Ihcy improvise with Ihe equipment they have Herald photo goodstart The next year this went on lo level Iwo coaching Many of our Junior toaches of that lime have now received iheir level one certificate and are working on level two Sara lloare Donna and Jennifer Pepper are in HOI I believe it the club holds on Its tradition of training their older gymnasts and If Ihe Recreation department keep up its good work of promt ling qualified clinics Ilallon Hills will always work well In this system A l present time the Halloo Hills Jills hive 40 gymnasts competitive is pre and 15 on the recreational club Many girls wish to be In Ihc club and gymnastics but do wish to spend the 1015 hours training or Ihe pressure of OGr The girls will train for a or two and make a decision as to which group they arc capable of entering The girl Is the serious gym nasi that loves both and Ihe lillon and must be willing to work very hard to ptlsh her goals Al present ihe club next is to acquire a facility which could run programs for both girls and boys Most of Ihe bigger centres have large enough futilities for Iheir club to train properly to enable the sport lo progress further In Hills our training facilities will have to expand Jodie practice 100 per cent of the time Here caught napping on beam Hopefully a coach looking Herald photo DISPOSSESSING AN OPPONENT FROM
