Shannon Snyder sometimes but most i S on her finger nallt during a team practice me feel S Georgetown teammates will be taking part In the good she Just championship cross country meet that be held ta Georgetown go out and run Hard work key element to running success By DAN RALPH Sport There no clear cut secret to the success Karen Cos grove and Donna Metcalfe have experienced coaches of Georgetown District High Schools cross country running team Since the two faculty members got together and took over the team in 1974 has won IS gold medals and six silver awards in Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association competition This weekend George town will be the host site for the annual OFSAA cross country meet which will be held at Georgetown Golf and Country Club About 1200 athletes from across the province will be competing for top honors Weve gone to a couple of seminars and have been asked If we have any secrets for our success said Wo tell coaches we train two nights a week during the summer every night during Ihe school year and run In one meet a week The coaches say they cant do that but if you look at the schools that win regularly that Is what they do Butbclngacoachofup to sometimes runners means you must be able to handle people too There is a lot of psychology involved because of all the egos youre handling Cos grove said Youve got to know when and where to draw the line and not to push the runners so hard that they quit The coaches give lot of themselves and commit a lot of their time to the team and expect the same from team members We decided we would not put the commitment DONNA METCALFE Winning not coachs whole objective ACTON Acton High School will have to be content with sending Individuals to provincial cross country champion ships at least for now Cross country coach Bruce Andrews said because basketball Is fairly big In the school a lot or potential cross country athletes decide to play basketball Instead He also said that because Acton has a select number of feeder schools the chances of getting a lot of athletes are lower Getting a team to the provincial championship Is Just not probable with the numbers coming out he said But Acton will be re presented In the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association meet which will be held at Georgetown Golf and Country Club this week end will be competing In the seni or girls class while Maria Brillinger will be running in the midget girls race Andrews said he will not predict where bis runners will finish up think is the favorite in her class and she Is capable of winn ing but if she doesnt then there Is no problem When she goes out I know she will give it her best and If her best is good enough for second or third that day then there Is no problem As for Maria weve set her goal at finishing in the top 10 If she can doMiat she will have run a very good race and if she finishes in the top IS she will have run well Andrews said having the OFSAA meet in Georgetown will prove to be an Incentive to the Georgetown District High School runners This year GDHS Is send Ingsix teams and a total of about 30 runners ANDREWS It is excellent for Georgetown because they have had good teams for so long that now the people have an opportunity of coming out and seeing the best for a day Something like this shows the people that we have good Junior runners in both George town and Acton he said Andrews has both his athletes on rigorous training programs nick docs a weight pro gram and runs about miles a week while runs at least SO miles a week as well as doing weight work too Just because the season ends Saturday does not mean Andrews will sess ions Tor his athletes Well keep working and plowing ahead he said Andrews added both runners will be training for the upcom ing track and field seas on too Andrews stresses he does not try to pressure his athletes AH he asks Is that they give it a 100 per cent effort That is what on Is oil about he said If you can learn some thing from it all then that Is the Important thing Year been a success for Georgetown Georgetown District High Schools midget boys cross country runn ing team has been close to perfection as a team can be this year In the five races the team has entered It has walked away with five overall championships The top runner of the team is Jeff Amato who has won two of the five races he has entered and placed second in the three others Teammate David Paul has three second place finishes while Don Cruise has a second third and fourth place finish In bis attempts The highlight for the team to date came two weeks ago at the Halton championships when it recorded a perfect score as all four team memb ers finished in the top four In the race The team for that race was Amato Paul Stephen Eastwood and Glenn Mulder The midget girls squad has also had a fine year finishing In top spot three times In five races and adding a second place in another Janelle Lewis Alison Irvine Burroughs and Una Newman have plac ed well In their races The Junior boys squad started out slowly finishing fourth and 12th overall Ihelr first two races but came on strong to win their last three Mike Wood had a second third fourth and fifth place individual finish in four of the races while teammates Mckenzie Andy Kiss and have placed well also Anne Coullghan Linda Shannon Sny der and Tract led lira junior team to a top finish in the championships with finishes of seventh eighth ninth and overall respectively The squad has two other fourth place finishes to their credit this year also The senior boys crew ANNE COULIGHAN HARRIS second and third spot finish to their top finish in the Italian meet Erik Hopkins won the class race at the meet and had a second fifth place finish in two others Kevin Powers was second behind his team- male and was third in another race and sixth In another at the event David Banks and Ken Hesse arc the other team members The senior girls team has had second third and fourth place team finishes as well us being best team at event Shawn has been Ihe lop runner In this class for finishing In the tap 10 three times and was never out of the top finishers in all five Harris and Angle MncKay were right behind In the meet finish ANtn KISS fourth and rcipcctively Karen Pepper rounds out the four member team Georgetown has won the lop school award in four of the five meets and was second In the other As well the over all boys and girls team has been awarded to GDHS in three of the In this sport all four members run and are given points fur their HOPKINS finish- After the race is done the points are added up and the school with lowest total wins ho class Georgetown District High School will be send ing a strong team to this Ontario Fede ration of Schools Athletic Association OFSAA cross country meet being Georgetown Golf and Country Club All six learns quali fied for the provincial Into this unless we got something out of It In return Metcalfe said We dont like to lose and the team knows we get down when we lose Most of the runners know what Is expected of them but they also know the rewards shesaid Being a coach allows the two an opportunity of getting closer to the ath letes than they could to their students in here we can take one of the runners aside and put our arms around them and talk Metcalfe said You cant do that in a class room The two coaches have been working with one another so long that In many Instances they dont have to commu nicate their wishes to one another Our personalities seem to work well to gether said Weve worked so long together hat it is almost like a telepathy is there Weve coached alone when the other was having a baby but I stiil call Donna she said There are times too when the two are There have been times when the staff have called me Donna and mixed us up Cos- grave said One of the Important values he two try to portray to their runners is value of having fun while running If one docs not enjoy their selected activity chanc es arc he will not stick with It very long We wouldnt be coaching If It was not a lot of fun Metcalfe said High school sports must be furi sold As far what the Georgetown teams chances for success ore at this weekend s meet both coaches remain cautious but confident Our overall depth Is better than It was last year said and wo won two gold medals last year I am going go out on a limb and say all of our six teams will place in the lop If wc dont win at least one gold medal Ill be disappointed We have a reasonable chance for two gold Metcalfe said Georgetown traditional power in meet Theres a saying that goes You cant keep a good man down for long Such a saying could be applied to the Georgetown District High School cross coun try program Upon starting in When then wrestling coach Lew Martin got the ball rolling GDHS has won gold medals and six silver medals for team competition What Is more Impressive Is that the team did not win lis first Ontario Federa tion of Schools Athletic Association OFSAA medal until 1976 assist ed Martin with the pro gram and she took charge of four female runners who wanted to pursue the sport further But in 1974 decided to get involved In coacha- basketball and volleyball and thats where Karen Cosgrove and Donna Metcalfe entered the picture and Metcalfe have been coaching the crosscountry team since that time and have seen the club evolve into a powerhouse high school crott competition The two trac with join the team In the two went to their first OFSAA meet where Mike Dixon was the schools first provincial champion runner by vir tue of his first place finish In the senior boys class In 1975 Martin left the club when he moved to Smith Falls and Cos grove was busy with her house in Acton That left Metcalfe and Dixon to coach the team and that year GDHS won Its first major meet by taking the York University meet The OFSAA meet was held in that year and Ian Clark became the second GDHS runner lo win gold with his top finish in the midget boys class That season the midget team was fourth overall The next year the provincial meet was held in St Catharines and it marked a milestone In GDHS running history Clark won the midget race again and the team won the first team medal ever by a Georgetown school a silver The steady string of young bright runners was starting form as In 1977 Doug Smith kept he tradition alive At the OFSAA meet held In North Bay another mile stone has been achieved The Junior boys team of Clark John Fergus Barnes and Arnold Bracket recorded what was the first gold medal winning team per formance ever by a Rebels team edging Lockerby by three In 1978 Georgetown qualified all six teams for OFSAA meet held In Scarborough The junior group of Heather Reed Heather McLaren Diane Jones and recorded the first medal In girls competition by winning a sliver The midget boys team also kept pace this time with Mark Andrew Brake David Griffiths and Geoff Fer guson winning the team goldforlhelrclass Also the junior boys team added a gold medal per formance with memb ers being Clark Doug Smith and Arnold Bracket The 1979 OFSAA meet held In Kingston gave the team another milestone in their brief history Once again six teams qualified for the meet and five of them cane back with gold medal team awards The midget girls team of Lynn McPhall Debbie Newman Susan Kristen- sen Kathy Webb and Kim Newcombe won their class defeating Henry Carr for the medal Gary Hulbert Stuart and Doug Gillespie won the midget title while the Junior boys recorded a onepoint win for the gold in their class Members were Doug Smith Jim Mclntyre David Griff iths Glenn Britton and Scott Harris Ion Clark finished up his brilliant running career at by pacing the senior team to a gold medal Other members were Jon Lan caster Arnold Brake Ferguson Barnes and Jim Allen Realizing the difficulty in repeating the prior years effort of five team titles the team prepared for the IBM in London and came away with three gold medal winning teams The girls team of Barb Gage ana i Edgar carried the banner to victory The midget boys team also recorded gold with members being Paul Watts Chris Ferguson Gary Hulbert George Howie and Dave Banks The final medal winner for the team was the junior girls squad made up of Sherry Debbie Newman Sandra Marciniuk Susan Krlstensen and Liz Ramsay The following year at Boyd Park the club again came away with medal performances The senior team of Doug Smith David Griffiths Jim Mclntyre and Glenn and Stacey Wheeler won a gold medal while the junior and senior girls teams came home with sliver medals members of the senior team were Heather McLaren Sherry can Sandra Marciniuk Ramsay and Robin Dodokln while the junior girls team was made up McPhall Debbie Newman Susan Kristen sen and Kathy Webb On a bitter cold day In 1962 the OFSAA meet was held at Earl Bales Pork and once again teams sparkled The midget girls team of Amy Powers Nancy Mustard Anne Sandra Heaton and Linda Wenham narrowly defeated ONeill Collegiate of by three points for the gold medal The midget boys team of Mike Wood Darren Greg McKcn- and Patrick Braund and the senior girls team of Susan Sandra Marciniuk Debbie Newman and Jennifer Pepper both look home silver medals Lost year in London Ihe midget girls aad boys teams both came home with gold medals For the girls team the gold medal was the fourth time In as many years Members were Alison Irvine Amy Powers Tracy Green and Kim Hale The midget boys team of Jeff Greg MacKenzle Darr en Mark Lamb and Terry Dixon won the medal that for two years had eluded them This year with the OFSAA being held In Georgetown It Is likely with six teams will win some medals
