to I would call it bouncy Come prepared to top your feet In time to the The colorful onto of was captured perfectly by Globe Productions in their performance of the musical It been a long time since the John Elliott Theatre has hosted such a well rounded lion The show boasts strong lead actors and singers magnificent band accompaniment thanks to musical dircc lor Paul a supportive talented chorus The biggest surprise of the show is the quality of the orchestra gone ore the days of the More women advance up corporate ladder squeaky violins With such rousing bouncy and uplifting music as is Monies trademark the band becomes a part of the excitement the actors aptly express while hinging Much or the music reflects the mood of the twenties when life was treated by many as carefree and happy The story is about an il nine aunt called Ma me who cherishes her nephew whom she is left to take tare of She battles a stiffcollared adversary while attempting to raise her nephew as a free thinker me is a hilarious character who takes everything In stride constantly reminding her companions to enjoy life to the fullest Actress Sandra Herald Staff More women than men have been appointed to supervisory or manage ment positions at the region in the last years According to Personnel Director Dennis Camm women and men have moved into these positions in the past decade There are also females in more traditionally male occupations like surveyors operators in the water plants lab technicians health inspectors a law and an engineer Mr Camm said He sold the region even has one laborer who is a woman However women are still out numbered by men when it comes to the higher ranked jobs Most of the senior staffs through out are male the regions chief administrative officer Dennis Pcrlin said Its very difficult for us There are perceptions that females arc not able to move through the organization to higher levels as we think they can A provincial subsidy of has been made available for an Action program at the region which would look at the move of female employees up the ranks at the munici pal levels of government The region would be responsible for another toward the program and its Implementation Last week the regions finance and administration committee debated whether such a study should be done In house with regional staff or be contracted to an outside consultant Burlington Joan Little objec ted to hiring a consultant and said substantial savings could be realized by having such a done by the regions own staff The consultant is going to ask the same questions were going to ask and send us a bill for she said The chief administrative officer didnt agree The people who will be doing it Cupids dance Feb 16 By MARTHA LEWIS Herald Special At a recent Balllnafad having the males do all the work he pointed out Little said she wanted to know what the application and success rates were for women and men for job openings with the region wont support a woman who doesnt know what shes doing compared to a man who docs she said We have to get the best people and try to ensure there isnt discriml nation Mr Perlin said the region had such statistics already and that they showed females are moving to high ranking positions although at a slow rate All of us around this table know that some kind of Affirmative Action is desirable the question is only what kind Burlington Coun Walter Mulkcwich said I dont think it trying to promote women if theyre not capable of It The personnel director thought the real issue was to have someone look at what are the barriers and the attitudes keeping the number of women super visors down We want to look at more of the innuendo areas the areas that arent right up front which are discouraging tojiome Mi said There has been ongoing natural social change but where arc the areas that might be giving some discourage ment he asked If there are any lets look at them If there maybe it not as bad as we think it Is Burlington Coun James Grieve asked Mr Camm Is he thought Ihe hiring situation was bad for females working at the region I don think Its bad Mr Camm said The natural change has been very healthy and good for the organiza tion We make sure our invitation to apply Job is clearly one of equal opportunity for men and women Mr Camm said At the movies By RUSSELL is a winner In the role She has all the ingredients to draw the audience into the story Shes sweet charming unpretenti ous a loving guardian and a strong minded soul Sandra lias an exceptionally strong voice that can boom when she wants to but she got ability to keep the tempo and volume controlled when it required As an actress Mrs does well to bring out the character of Maine who is always changing from situation to another Top marks must go to Richard Sowcry who ploys the part of Patrick Dennis age 10 Hes got wonderful talent for one so young displaying a array of emotions as he explores the New York City life around him Patrick is replaced In latter stages by the older actor Doug Crich ton who has a very good On the comic end Agnes Johnson steals the show She is a spinster nanny who is eventually corrupted by the devil maycare lifestyle of Auntie Is transformed a starlet type which is a funny transformation in itself but later she arrives pregnant to the astonishment of Mame played by Wayne Ball is another funny character Hes a stereotyped gay hair stylist that eventually and her sweetheart Pickett celebrate her ride during tax hunt faints over the way Auntie Mame tries to earn her keep as a manicurist Georgetown District High School teachers Bill Bingham and Jim perform their roles well Mr Bingham gets his accent down right for his part as southern suitor while Mr Is cost as the evil do- gooder making sure Patrick receives an exclusive education The chorus looks splendid In their colorful costumes and they add a bouncy brightness to every scene The danc ing In ploy is well done especially during the rendition or the title song Mame with danc in red riding out fits Mames costumes are magnificent and they re an integral part of the overall color of the evening The set is simplistic but effective The idea of set designer Blake was to not draw the attention away from so many colorful costumes and he has accomplished this The script is funny and there is a story the audience can grapple with Unfortunately the ending is weak and the show ends on a bit of an anticlimax is an uplifting play to go and see The cast and band have captured that special feeling of the roaring Herald Columnist came to town last week and took over The Globe Productions version of the hit musical is great fun If you still havent got your tickets for it better hurry up The wordof mouth on this one should sell them out pronto Remaining dales In the run arc February 14 15 and I first became acquainted with Mame Dennis In Patrick Dennis hilarious book Auntie jmc I adored Rosalind Russel In the role in the mo vie version non musical piny Somehow I never saw it in Its musical incarnation until now All this time I have thought of as a one song show You know that great title Well I thought the rest of score was bland background music Was I ever wrong There are several showstoppers in the score My favorite was We Need a Little Christmas Now This is in no way a review of the production that will be done elsewhere in the paper But I must comment on the set design and all around production values Costumes lighting wereall top of the heap The cast was full of exuberance and life One or my favorite characters In this saga has always been Agnes Marlcne Johnston did her proud All of the supporting cast did credible work but ultimately must stand or fallen the performance of Ihe actress In the title role Sandra Mamc lit up stage Congratulations to everyone involved in this production The most important function of a theatrical production is to entertain and enthrall an audience Mame certainly did that on the Saturday night was there J POPE ST ARRET 232 Guelph Street Georgetown 41 6J8731 601 Tor4168462561 Developer doesnt like road By AM PEDERIAN Herald Malt that the entire road
