Herald Special Deporting from their usual custom of after noon meetings the members of the Arts and Crafts of Georgetown held their regular meet in the evening In the banquet room of North Halton Golf and Country Club On this occasion bands and friends of the members were invited to hear the guest speaker Eric Knoespel founder of Artcast which is he oldest sculpture foundry in Canada Until the late sixties Canadian sculptors had to send their works of art to Europe or New York State to be cast in bronze Mr speech was accompanied by slides and very clearly demonstrated the process of bronze casting as It applies to art objects The method is called the lost wax method Ancient Egyptians and Chinese used the same method lo produce art objects but the process has been greatly improved In modern limes Usually an artist works a model in wax but If he uses some other material it has to be transferred to wax at This is done by making a rubber mould and converting the piece Much hand work Is involved as the wax model musl be very accurate In the wax room a ceramic shell is built around the model by dipping it in sand then shell Is dried and the wax melted out then fired in a furnace at two thousand degrees ready for casting Bronze Is an alloy 9095 percent copper and the balance silicone or tin The metal hardens almost Immediately and in half an hour the shell may be taken off All edges must bo smoothed then sand blasted At this point metal is dull and must be polished or a patina applied Mac Reynolds who sculptured a bust of the Queen worked during five sessions at Bucking ham
