been around Memorial Arena more than any hockey mom or dad he doesnt call himself a hockey fan The likeable arena manager for the Town of Hills celebrated his retirement last week with friends fellow workers and family joining together to mark Ihc occasion Mr Gosling has spent years managing duties a I lown hockey as well as supervising activities the Dick Licatn and four community An avid golfer and football fan Mr Gosling always enjoyed going to Memorial Arena to Don was a celebrity last week when party was held In hit honor to congratulate him years working to help manage our arena unit community centre watch the Georgetown Raiders on Friday nights He never expected he would be working there on a full lime basis watching hockey careers develop at all levels He remembers NHL referee Bryan Lewis as a high school student who used o organize his peers to help cut down the Ice scrapers It was a tedious job required before modern iceflooding equipment was Introduced In his earlier days In England Mr Gosling remtmbcrs seeing a lot of hockey played there so when he came to Canada in 1957 there was no adjust menl to our national sports pastime Don Gosling was born In a small town about IS miles south of Bristol In England His father was the station master on tho Great Western Railway A country boy at heart Mr Gosling won an award for the cleanest and best milker at age nine at a local agricultural show At age 16 he did an apprenticeship West land Aircraft as a general machinist During World War he was in the Home Guard As an equipment assistant after the war he was sent to Egypt Israel and Iraq with the Royal Air Force Although working in the aircraft industry for years it wasnt until 1957 when Mr Gosling emigrated to Canada that he actually got lo fly In an airplane Hack then it took IS hours for a flight from London lo Montreal Mr Gosling was lured to Canada wilh promises of work in Ma I ton on Canada a jet aircraft the Avro Arrow He moved to Georgetown shortly after arriving in Canada and for months he worked for the firm Ho calls Arrow one of ihe most famous Everyone thought highly of Ills job was In the final assembly putting the wings and tall unit of the aircraft In 1061 Bob Lane asked Mr Gosling to help out as arena manager Back ihcn It was just like running a business he said His duties included calling monthly board meetings of ho parks the iceresurfacing machine come along the arena staff and the rink rats would have to flood the Ice manually Mr Gosling remembers The rink rats were paid cents for cleaning ihe Ice and now the young helpers are paid minimum wage he said When ice was flooded manually It took people flood he rink and five people to scrape away the Ice The manual flooding worked well but it was a lot of work scraping away the accumulated layers unwanted Ice he said The highlight of his career as an arena manager tame in 1971 when Mr Gosling served as the president of the Ontario Arenas Association He travelled extensively wilh his duties meeting his peers and holding meetings and conventions Active In the community Mr Gosling was president of Ihc Georgetown Lions Club In and before that was president of the Georgetown Agricultural Society He is currently a member in good standing of the Chapter of the Freemasons In retirement Mr Gosling will enjoy his golfing photography and the company of a grandchild His wife Joyce and he could possibly travel lo within the next year or so but plans haven been finalized Meanwhile the former arena manager Is set pursue some close- up photography with his new mm camera lens given to him as a retirement present At his retirement dinner were dignitaries such as Mayor Miller Regional Chairman Pomcroy Ihe Chamber of Commerce and In lives of many in 1974 Mrs Lawson was able spend more time dabbling In politics Ever since she marri husband Jack Kay became involved with the Liberal party Her husband was the area chairman of the North Liberals and she helped him In his duties Until the time of his death in 1982 Mr was thechairman for Ihe North Liberals Jack was active on the federal Liberal scene attending both the conventions where Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau were selected as leaders of Iheir party For her part Mrs has been the director of special for many years and In the last provincial elec tion she was the chair man for the North area for Grits Mrs Lawsons only daughter Carol is also heavily involved work Ing for Liberal party Carol is an executive member of the Haiton Liberal Riding Associa tion How docs Mrs Lawson
