and lake of them Andrews said That what you re go ing for I hope to gain working with high level athletes at a large competition One of the things thai has hit Is because these letes are good we think of them as being mature However most of them are jusloung kids 1 d like to gain an understanding of how prepare athlete for national or International competition the into physical ion and how they can Kith the pressure they will face 1 d like to I tarn how to balance out he feeling the athlete has from Ihc time he leaves for a competition to when he gets there Not only docs the athlete have to cope with the race but everything else like travel lag find potential time loss I would like to know more As a coach Andrews said because the time to work with he athletes involved In the Games is short he will try to flit down with each Individ ual prior He said they will go over training schedule and discuss what runner feels his strong points are and eventually come up with a for the race As a coach you must be an example and you can t treat something like this as holiday However I am excited lo see what It is like lo be part or something that Is a national event he said Andrews will attend a the beach two George town teenagers have been busy doing some thing more commonly done during the winter months Don Cruise and Dave Harris have spent most of summer week end lime playing hockey hot at a hockey camp rather the two were in to try out for the Central Ontario select minor bantam team and made the final cut About players from as far as Peterborough Owen Sound and Hunts were invited to the team scamp ch was which is near Lindsay In early Since then the team has played same a Inst other minor bant am select teams from Western Canada the Un ited States as well as groups in Ontario The idea of summer select hockey is not a new idea as the Central Ontario league comp rising of nine teams from novice to minor bantam has been in operation for the past 10 years However Harris and Cruise arc the first play from Georgetown to be invited and make such a team Involved in this lypc of program Both players to first being surprised about hating made the team roster because of the calibre of talent pre sent However they both say they re glad to have been selected The competition is really fierce Cruise said You don t get a chance like this very often to play with play this good I was surprised to be Invited Harris added CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS DON and HARRIS I thought I d make Ihe first few cuts but I wasn positive I d make the final So far this season Cruise and Harris have played in five ments all across Ontario Their team has won two of Ihem The final tour of the year will be played this weekend In Peterborough Being Involved in the summer program has meant Cruise and Harris have played hockey year round Both say It has been a tiring but add it s a sacrifice they d readily make again Team coach Bill Dun lop who Is also in charge of operations for the Central Ontario group had good things to say on both ploy progress David Is a go steady hockey playei who gives you a 100 per cent effort He has the drive and desire and is an Inspirational type Donnlc has put more points on the board with us now than he had prob ably all last winter He has a lot of potential This Is Dunlops first year as director of the Central loop having spent the past four years involved with the North crn league which Included centres like Oshawa to Trenton and as far north to and Unlike the Ontario Minor Hockey Assoc lat ion setup during the win the summer leagues arc not zoned thus all owing boys from all ad joining centres a chance lo try out and improve Dunlop feels the zoning not pushed he said player hurts the good players They art to develop You put a with players level he has to do his job The has been approached about dropping zoning but won move It bothers me to sec teams from the United States come up here beat us hands down They have open When the boys go back lo their Id the winter they are so far ahead Ihey got to come down lo the level of team During the winter they are not play ing at the level they should be Interest in the summer program has doubled in the Central league since last year said This year alone over players incd out for the lcngue nine teams He said the players are once they make ihe team which includes Cooper a lis two sweaters and a jacket The parents are told if they can get two willing to pay for It costs around to run this and we have about 150 boys so 1 ve had to put a lot of my own money in However I just more concerned about giving the bays a chance get ice time good coaching and a chance to Improve The onus though is on the players to make II to the practices and lour as no learn buses are provided training camp the practices were held three times a week while after the final cuts Ihe club met once a week because of the PUTTING ON A SHOW CITY TV Jim shows good form on this putt Unfortunately the former
