SECTION THE HE It ALP Wednesday July 31 1BHS Page Better to go out and do it Hugh Graham says Running farm a lot of work By DAN RALPH Herald Sports Editor For a person in charge of operations on a Goacre farm it is nice to have a convenient method of transportation However on this day Hugh Graham is having problems For some reason his golf cart want to run smell smoke he says I guess well have to walk A member of the Canadian World Cup equestrian jumping team the past two years Graham has been employed at Hillcrest Farm the past eight and a half years As well as running the farm Graham arranges training schedules tor the 30 horses present Some are owned by while others come from clients Amanda Salter here gives a little tender loving care Abraxus has Just been out for a little ride with Hugh Graham and Salter was getting ready to go back to his stall Herald photo Graham can put the animals through their paces on the mini Jump course the Farm Also there is an area designated for hay that is harvested in July that provides winter feed Not only does the 30yearold native set up the programs he personally tries to put the animal through its paces Graham too offers riding lessons and spends an average of three to five hours daily riding Now If that wasnt enough Graham finds time to compete In or so horse shows annually Many of the competitions are held in Ontario but some take Graham to Western Canada the United Slates and Europe If 1 were to sit down and look all I have to do I want to do it Graham says Jokingly It s better to go out and do it rather than look at actually what has to be done Graham came to the farm in when then Georgetown resident Bert Pabst approached him about a particular form was interested in buying When who owned some horse stalls decided to indeed purchase the area now known as Graham was offered a position He has been there Graham prior had apprenticed under Jim Day at Samcson Farm in Hornby when he first became Interested In horse jumping In 1972 At the time Day was on the Canadian national team It was under Day that Graham purchased his first horse Spot Check and won his first jumping event at the Royal Winter Fair Show both in 1973 The Royal show is the culmination of he competitive season and those riders who attend do so alter accumulating points during shows held earlier in the season Graham also competes in shows that give top competitors points toward making the Canadian team for the World Cup There the top 40 riders in the world compete for global honors As well as representing Canada in the past two World Cups Graham hat been on the national team that won the silver medal at Ihe Pan Am Games in 1983 as well as riding with the Canadian team that finished fourth in the Olympic Games In Los Angeles However Graham did not come into show jumping initially He spent his high school years refining his technique in calf roping When was living on my parents farm in someone moved in next door I would go over there to do miscellaneous tasks in order to ride There were some guys there involved in Western and they got me involved But a keen love for horses got Graham interested in show jumping When he made the decision to pursue equestrian event he had to devote a lol of and energy to perfecting his chosen venue Nooncwaa it over tome to go and get it Now that he has been involved In jumping since 72 Graham said he really t miss calf roping too much I guess I might miss It if I had time to think about It but really don have the time he said One of the ongoing aspects of Graham job is the search for the perfect horse However when Graham goes looking to buy a horse he does it a little differently than a racing enthusiast who buys his horse before ever seeing it run Rather he Judges the colt potential on who its parents are Buying a horse is always a gamble Normally I would buy three four or Hugh Graham aboard Note here clears a Jump wlih relative Take Note Is one of many young potential hones Graham has on fiveyearolds and I would sec hem first inaction to see what kind of ability they had There is never on end to finding the perfect horse As to what the perfect horse is Id you know when I find it When Graham looks over his career and its vast accomplishments he admits he might have to soon think about setting up different future goals Graham said not totally eliminate the possibility of becoming Involved a horse racing in five to id years In fact he took somewhat of a step In that direction this past winter Graham purchased a twoyearold and the horse will enter Kinghaven Farm Ihe largest racehorse training facility in Canada this summer and the training sessions go well it is conceivable the horse could be running this fall or winter I could soy I cant complain about Jumping accomplishments and life direction Graham said But there is always more you can always do better I would like to someday build my own farm and be a little bit more oriented towards my future When one watches calf roping or horse jumping on television the person feels the horse does all the work However Graham disagrees As well as having a good horse in calf roping you have to rope the calf which takes some skill In Jumping the horse does less than SO per cent of the work The rider has to do things like getting the horse to the best Jumping point There is a lot of handeye coordination Graham also added there are times when a horse becomes a little hard to handle on the course That requires the rider touse his strength to keep his horse under control throughout the routine If It was easy and everyone could do it I guess there would be a lot of people doing it he said North Halton tennis tourney North Halton Golf and Country Club was the site for the club doubles tennis championships this weekend Audrey Houston and Brenda Sisnett won the ladles final downing Christine Steen and Thunich Bob Houston and Peter Acton took home the mens crown downing Kennedy and Don Hurley in a tight l final In the consolation final Midge Hampshire and Allison downed Anne Munroe and Melanle ft7 The mens final saw Gord Doig and Rob Small defeat Geoff Taylor and Baseball Association a very hard time Saturday night at home the Eagles came back to defeat second place Brampton The Georgetown team did it in fine style as with two out and the bases loaded Louis Gavlao hit a tworun single that gave the Eagles the win Its so confusing to me said Eagles manager Dan We come through with big wins against the good clubs then go to a place like Glanbrook and blow ourselves out This was a satisfying win Just as satisfying was the news that the Eagles are going to play In the Ontario Baseball Association OBA playoffs this year Even with just three wins this year manager Dan Gulstlni said his club has been accepted for the round playoffs Exact details are not known yet The OBA takes recommendations each year about what teams should play in what divisions In past years the Eagles have played In higher categories but Gulstini is Just happy to have hit club Involved In the playoffs It gives us a chance to salvage something from this year he said This gives us a chance to go in which is what this Is all about Its a little bit of a downer to go down to the level but we could win it If we play like we did against Brampton What a great way tbet would be to end the year he said Saturday night Mario pitched the first seven Innings The mere fact pitched was a surprise to Guisunl Last week he had to leave a game after injuring his hip In a collision with teammate Nell When he came to the park asked him how he felt Mario told me he wasnt perfect but was well enough to pitch Gulstlni said Rod Wilson ended up earning the win as the Eagles were down when left Another surprise for was the offensive showing his players come up with Louis Galvao had two singles and a double five appearances while Jay Anderson Paul Gulstlni Rob and Dan Curtis all had two hits each Single hits went to Mike Mario Colloccla and Designated hitter Scott Farley did not get a hit but did earn a pair of sacrifices In the game The Eagles scored four runs in the third inning while adding singles in the fifth and sixth two runs baited in during the ninth frame highlighted a threerun final at bat that gave the locals the win Earlier this week Georgetown game that was to be played last Tuesday in Burlington Gulstini tried to have the contest postponed because his club was minus a pitcher tGalvao had had Just played three games in many nights However Burlington wouldnt hear of It and Georgetown bad to forfeit Our league convenor was upset Gulstlni said He felt we had a legitimate excuse But what can you do The Eagles will play their final four games of the year at
