Letter to the editor Baseballis it alive or well in Georgetown A THE HERALD September II IMS Page JUST ME AND MY PUPS I Pure of look a rest break with three linv toxic Lady Major and Buddy The doggie are full grown I Mil Dear Sir Baseball is alive and well or is If Sun days Sept Day of Champs marked the end of the Georgetown Baseball Associations house league action and with the of this association is very much In doubt Key members of the executive for varying reasons will not be re turning next year and with diminished number of individuals Involved this year the prospects for a strong experienced know ledgeable nucleus are in Too few attempting to do so much has put a strain on the effective opera lion of the house league this summer Ironically enough though there appeared to be an abundance parents who appeared the park on a regular basis but professed other commitments which pre vented them from gelt involved However It never ceases to amaze me when listening and watching the sideline antics of some who suddenly become instant umpires coaches and administra tors Arms length Is obviously much easier than getting Next year executive will have a particularly hard time getting base ball off ground unless people are wilting to commit themselves Step forward now not next May or June now The G A general meeting will be held on Saturday Sept 14 at Holy Cross School at Anyone wishing lo Letters totke or Turn a deaf ear to spectators Dear Sir This letter Is in refe rence to Alex Toughs soccer of Sept 4 It seems you have a columnist who has vast experience In soccer but knows Utile about report ing true facts and like many scribes of today attempts to use the news papers to sensationalize a situation I refer to his reporting of the Vanan soccer team barracking offici als Any layman reading his column would think that members of this learn were unruly and committed infractions against referees on the field of play This could not be further from Ihe truth The fads are that a few members of this team attended wo games involving other learns as spectators As spectators they have the same rights as ny other spectator attending a sporting event whether it be hockey basketball or football There ore times when referees to make bad calls and as an old referee myself I usually found that the spectators would let me know first for all play ers and coaches were well aware that I was quite capable of handing out discipline if they opened Ihur mouths too loudly I remember many years ago when I first received my Scottish Football Association Referee certificate the old timer instructing us Informed me From now on youre blind and if you don know it right now the spectators mil convince you His point was that referees should not listen to spectators comments or they lose control oft he game Spectators have been and always will be an integral part of the game of soccer The fact that they attend means that they are enthusiastic about the wonderful game Lets not attempt to make rules that or Iheir verbal comm In conclusion may I add that all members of Ihe team Includ ing the coaches appre ciate the work and time that all referees put into the game I am sure teams conduct on the field of play has already proved this lo all of the officials One final comment Mr Tough that I dug out from the archives Open your eyes Alex you re missing a good game Yours sincerely Bill Rannachan Van an Coach Drivers disregard for life sickening Dear Sir On Saturday the of September at m our year daughter was driving home from her part lime Council Halton Arts Herald Column lit THE ARTS AND EDUCATION The flnt in a series In some ways the formal idea of the arts and education Is a bit ludicrous From the time you are born you are being educated in Ihc arts long before any other curriculum subject A baby sways to music listens to mothers lullabys bounces In a jolly Jumper A toddler loves to sculpt In mud paint incredible colourful creations swivel their diaper beat create a band with pots and pans sing off key to nursery songs All of Iheso activities are enjoyable fun to do relaxing stimulating They can give a feeling of personal satisfaction at creating something imaginative The older we get there seems to be a tendency to move away from these activities from which we got so much pleasure as children a rather odd twist we end up after a long working day watching television doing volunteer work or repairing the roof Actually some TV shows are terrific volunteers are important and always needed and repairs around the house are a necessary evil But of all these activities what are you really doing Just for just for fun just to make you feci better all on your own Some might feel some arts related could ruin macho image Personally I think II indicates a certain amount of sensitivity hat is refreshing Some may feel that It might affect their corporate image To that I say you will be enhancing your lifestyle making yourself a more interesting Many natural skills can be applied artistic pursuits Some sculptures require the knowledge of an engineer and the strength of a football player Music needs a mathematical mind to form the right cord Every minister or politician could put their acting talents to the enjoyable pastime of a play Anyone interested in science would be fascinated by Ihc chemical combinations used in pottery and print making Aerobics enthusiasts could put their energy and imagination into dancing on stage Fortunately we have in Hills a variety of arts activities and positive welcome Acton Chamber of Commerce gave lo an energy from wasle plant In Hills Monday I m not surprised because I have been speaking to people in Acton Mr Pomeroy said But I think its enthusiasm a key ingredient In making it happen Building such a plant would cost up to million the regional chairman estimated The town and region would have to go through a provincial environmental assessment hearing If you have a town thats willing to take It and a specific area willing to take it you can go through the environmental assessment quickly he said We made mistakes In the public participa tion part of it Mr said of regions failed attempts establish an energy from waste plant at Ford Motor Company Residents put up strong protests against plant enough to make the company back out of the project As a result energy from waste has been put on the regional back burner until public opinion is ready to accept it plants all over the world are environmentally safe Mr said Where you get into trouble is where you dont have proper maintenance or you dont burn what you were supposed to bum He said he would like see an energy from waste plant just for the north garbage which may Include Milton and another in the regions Probably Iwo in the region would be enough Mr said He noted Hills has tremendous costs hauling its garbage south costing over annually Those costs would be substantially If you could lip it here Mr Pomeroy said Minimizing trans port al Ion costs would reduce axes for both the and industrial of the commu nity Mr Allison said Although not naming any sites
