Heart ailment forces goalie into premature retirement TORONTO- Rick Wilson knew there come a day when he would decide to retire from hockey But he no Idea that decision would be made or him Retirement for the fiveyear International Hockey League and onetime Georgetown Chrysler Raider came July of this year While skating with his father Wilson became short of breath collapsed Wilson was taken to hospital and diagnosed as having heart muscle disease The medical term for the ailment is cardiomyopathy This enlarges the heart and gives it an irregular beat In healthy individuals added activity results in the heart pumping more blood But those with heart muscle disease the pumping action Is severely curtailed The end result Is Wilson cannot play competitive hockey Should he try the consequences could be fatal If Kick played hockey he would become short of breath far out of proportion than a normal person said his doctor Robert Sklar He could collapse and die suddenly of cardiac arrest Sklar said doctors are not sure of the disease cause but added it Is thought to or through viral infection who Is also he Toronto Argonauts team physician said Wilson is in a very serious situation Rick Is not well he said All I can do is advise him and treat any complications that come up Sklar said a lot is not known about the disease because extensive studies haven been done He
