Halton volleyball champ Rebels drive in final spike VICTORIOUS COACHES Georgetown volleyball coach Bob McKay above snows some of the final with Nelson The juniors won their final below Is carried Ugh by his in championship For toe first timer- same year Herald Strain during his teams Senior coach Grant the seniors beat Perdue Ballon finals In Volleyball history was made at the Georgetown District High School gym Wednesday afternoon For the first time ever both boys teams won Halton titles the same year Ironically the historic accomplishment occurred on the same day In the same building The senior squad dropped Its first game to Perdue 1510 but came back in Impressive fashion to win the next three 1510 and the title The Junior squad won Its championship with a threegame sweep over Nelson An enthusiastic crowd of over spectators watched the senior match which senior coach Grant Clatworthy said might have accounted for his club a opening game loss I think we were about the crowd In the first game said after the title win his second as coach Perdue took two buses to their semi final against Nelson so they were used to It big crowd But once we got control of the game I think the crowd lost Its effect But it was nice to see big crowd The people were well behaved and this a what high school sports is all about he said The Rebels made a change after their opening Joss which paid big dividends switched cap tain Jon Hammer and Graham Shep herd in the lineup which pitted Shepherd against top hitter Shepherd was more than equal to the task and effectively shut down offence with block after block In fact Georgetown second win was Shepherds game He made several key defensive blocks and appropriately served the games winn ing point Graham Shepherd was by far the best blocker today on both aides said Winning toe third game 151 was the cllacher Its tough to come back after something like that said his clubs ability to get the ball to a number of hitters was also Important In the win He added setter Pat Braun did Just that Volleyball revolves around If the setter can get the ball to the hitters in different situations The setter is an Important player and can determine the flow of the game Wepassed the ball consistently in the third and fourth game We were able to key on their big hitter and they couldn key on us he said Georgetown now advances to the Peel final and will host Wednesday at pro The they re fired up and really want to play The Halton title win was the second ever for the juniors but the first since 1978 It meant a lot of McKay as it was his first volleyball championship For a guy who doesnt know much about the game its a nice feeling he said This Is the first time both have won championships and its really something we did was take the net away from them he said winner advances to the AA going to bit right through them because tournament being held hi Etoblcoke J the following week Im confident Oatworthy said they were too disciplined to tip McKay was also surprised the didnt qualify for their league championship only went the minimum playoffs and Ill be surprised If a better three games team comes In than the one we played today For the junior club however the season ended with Wednesdays championship win No Junior Peel Hal ton or OFSAA event la offered It is disappointing said winning coach Bob McKay Its not tic for me but is for the boys Now I was very surprised he said But I that makes It nicer With the junior title McKay and his squad end the season with a near perfect mark In the Halton league we were including playoffs and won 30 games while losing just four I dldn t realize that McKay said Tataryn plays with broken nose but Raiders dont rally in loss By DAN RALPH Herald Sports Editor Even an Inspiring performance by Dave couldnt motivate Georgetown Chrysler Raid ers Friday night was hit In be face with a in the second period but the game despite having a broken nose However the Raiders dropped a decision to Oamatoea at the Alcott Arena The Raiders were leading when was hit After the game Tataryn said his decision to remain in the was partly bated on bis We had the lead and I thought I was playing fairly well said I was trying to play on that motivati on but it didrit work Right utter the hit Tataryn had trouble with his face mask which came loose twice The first time was caned off side but on me second occasion the scored the tying tally when Mike North came from behind the Raider goal and tucked It behind I didnt even see where the puck was said I thought it was frown against the boards But the veteran netmlnder manag ed to keep bis aenae of humor about the incident There a an old saying that a bruise lasts a couple of weeks but a goal lasu a lifetime so I decided to risk the couple of weeks Right now I feel like a Roman Its nose Roman all Bobby Hull here to watch sons play Golden Jet flies into Georgetown over my face said J can get my nose all out of Joint now Tataryn said the broken nose Incident affected him In the third period I felt tired not physically tired I think It was due to all the blood I lost The squad put the game out of reach In the third period with two goals in is seconds On both scores players were left alone In front The defence play well said Raiders coachgeneral manager Eyre Thats been a major concern for me I think we have a good nucleus but were missing someone wilh umph who will rock people We need tough ness Eyre said Friday his wingers werent going into the corners and digging for the puck Regulars Russ Shut and Paul Gallagher missed the game which Eyre PauLbaaheldtbebathandforus and when things been going well Rush would run at people and make things happen Eyre said But you can expect Elliott to be the only tough winger along the boards Winger Blake Hulls goal early In the final frame proved to be the winner Hull said the tally wasnt anything special The goal was all due to my linemateswbodidallthework leaded us In front and slid the puck under the goalie It wasnt pretty but they all count he said North had two goals for as Blake Hull Bob Peace had singles Derek Booth and Dave Chapman had the Georgetown goals The Raiders host Dundas Friday at the Alcott Arena starting at 8 p wont be avail able for Fridays game as he will be in Vancouver with the NHL Oldtimers team Former Winnipeg Jet and Chicago Black Hawk star Bobby Hull Sr was In attendance and chatted with after the game Hull said really took a shot and the Raiders goalie had one or his onelin ers waiting I thought the only way I could be as ugly as you are was to take Hull and Tataryn played against one another when the Raider goalie played for Toronto and Birmingham Both Tataryn and Ken came up big as the two robbed of sure goals time and time again wasn t critical of his defence Friday At least these guys are working their buns off The Raiders held their Fall Booster draw Amy Mitchell of Georgetown and Bramptons Dave Domlney The Raiders bad enceman Doug out to practice Tuesday He clayed two years In the International League The Raiders are still trying for goalie Mike Blake and are hopeful he will be In camp Blake played at Ohio State withLA Kings and New Haven of the American League However Georgetown wont sign former Toronto Maple Leaf Rocky Saginuk Saginuk lust got off compensation for a back injury and it completely healed The Raiders have signed centre Grab am Craig The was captain for Ferris State last year and played with defencemen Leo and Tim File there There was an unexpected surprise for fans at Fridays Georgetown- Senior A hockey game The Golden Jet Bobby Hull was in attendance at the Alcott Arena The former Chicago Black Hawk and Winnipeg Jet was there watching sons and Bobby Jr who toil with the Flamboro squad Hull had to be pleased as Blake had the winning goal in 52 win Bobby Jr had an assist Hull said he was impressed with the calibre of hockey at the senior level It is good hockey I remember the Senior I used to watch the players were In their upper KB and early 30s But today the players are so young its like glorified junior I guess senior hockey is following the trend of the National Hockey League Hull said Fridays game was the first time Hull had been out to see his boys play in the past couple of years He said now when he watches his sons play hockey he looks on as both a fan and parent I enjoy any brand of hockey where the players go all out and really hustle he said Im not really that critical of the boys as I was when they were kids Now as long as theyre out there enjoying themselves and helping their teammates thats all that matters Hull doesnt play much competiUvebockeytbewoays He still lives in Chicago and is busy represent ing a pair of companies One la in Mlssissauga and It produces an oint ment that keeps files away from farm animals and the other Is based in Chicago and It produce grocery bags Hull also still raises cattle Now thats my kind of hockey Hull Jokingly said of the pickup game Mowing the Senior A contest You play with rubber sticks have beer on the bench and theres no forecheck- It was small wonder that the many times when be was recognized Hull was asked for an autograph Hull said he still enjoys signing the autographs and chatting with hockey fan If the people stopped asking for the autographs Id know they would have forgotten be said If after playing hockey for years the people had forgotten Id think what Ive done was all for nothing No I dont mind the autographs As for his sons both have differing answers about the pressure Involved In playing hockey as Bobby Hulls sons It always does put pressure on you said Bobby Moat of the pressure I put on myself though Tonight I play well partly because I was too nervous because dad was here Bobby Jr said for the moat part the senior players dont treat him any different There are a few who want to take a round out of me but theyre all good hockey players here and Ive got to play with tbem he said But the pressure no longer exists for Blake It used to though be said But now if someone In the stands something to me it helps me because it makes me get mad and play a little harder Blake said his teammates make playing hockey a lot easier One reason I play is because I want to But the second reason la to be with these guys Theyre the best bunch Ive ever been associated with and are very supportive They dont expect any more from me thin tbey would from the average Joe off the street be said For the first time ever both Hull brothers are playing on the same team which is something new for both It is said Weve always competed against one another like other brothers but now I want to do the beat I can in front of him and be wants to do his best in front of me He Inspires me to play better he said The Golden JetBobl and DISCOVER FOR YOURSELF WHY SO MANY ARE NEW HYUNDAI PRODUCTS TEST DRIVE ONE TODAYI RUNS OH LOW MKHELM AIL SEASON RADIAL TIRES LOW COST
