A HKHALD Wedn ELECTION REPORT Norton reclaims Ward seat Hilton will ask for vote recount Incumbent Ward town councillor Peter Norton easily swept through a Held of sin candidates to a seat In the Nor elections But It may be a bit premature to give an official standing for the other town council seat The final results show Mr Norton with 1008 votes Joe Hewitt with 877 votes and Ted Hilton with Mr Hilton said he will ask for arecount Like gentlemen Joe Hewitt and Ted Hilton stood as the poll results for Ward were marked on a chart at Gordon Alcott Hall The Ward candidates watched Impatiently as their standing for the last and final council seat narrowed A beaming Joe Hewitt won the last seat by Juat votes over Mr Hilton Mr Hilton talked to The Herald later in the evening and he said hes decided to contest the final tally and ask for a recount He said he heard there was one poll where ballots were not being counted if a voter only marked one candidates name Mr Hilton will be contacting the returning officer and the town clerk- administrator about a recount He Is surprised that his competitor Joe Hewitt as strong but he attributes that to his competitors negative comments determine how she would do at the polls this time You couldnt call It Mrs Fisher said of the race for the two local council seats for Ward 3 You just know that you can have splits all over the place with four well known people In the race She said her years as trustee probably helped residents Identify who she was Mrs Fisher noted shes the second trustee to make the transition from education to local politics In the past seven years in Hal ton This is a whole different arena People will wonder whether youll function with the same gusto in the new position as the old she said Its a basic question that can only come through be answered with work on council Although she doesnt currently live in Ward 3 she said she chose to run in that ward because of the future plans for that part of town Her family intends to move into he ward shortly Mrs Fisher said shell be lighting to preserve the uniqueness of Ward in he next three years She said she worked as hard In this campaign as she did seven years ago when she first ran for trustee outside of her word Although Mrs Fisher says shell miss education and the friends she made through her work with the board she thrilled about the new challenges she going to be taking on now defeats former MP The biggest contest in Ward was the one between Marilyn Serjeantson and Rud Whiting Incumbent Marilyn Serjeantson managed to beat out the former provincial member of parlia for the regional council seat leading right from the start When the results came In from the first two polls Mrs Serjeantson was leading by votes to The margin continued to grow so that by the time five polls were counted it was votes for Mrs Serjeantson to for Mr Whiting The difference became more apparent when lft polls had reported Mrs Serjeantson had Unvotes to Mr Whitings838 There were only six polls left to report by then The final tally was for Mrs and for Mr Whiting I had to work very hard I canvassed every door the Incumbent said representative paid off In this election Shes been a town councillor since February 1977 Her opponent Whiting his loss to Mrs Serjeantsons past record as well They public Just want a change They were pleased with Marilyns representation I think thats what happened Mr said I knew it could be close and could go either way the Georgetown real estate broker said In the last week of the campaign I could see it was going to be a tight race He said he ran a good campaign and noted Mrs Serjeantson did also Mr Whiting was pleased there was no mud slinging In the campaign he said Although this is
