offered to others In the past most persons with Downs Syndrome were on medical advice being left to develop in a system that was at best neglectful and uncaring or at worst actively abusive Today many are receiving the love and care they require to grow to be con members of society What is the cause of this genetic disorder There is an extra chromozomc which may result in approximately characteristics all of which are found in the general population For people with Downs Syndrome there is a cluster of these characteristics although they are Individualized and no one has all the characteristics General fine and gross motor movements are problem and there may be moderate to mild re tarda lion Only a few have severe or are within the range of normal intelligence Occasionally a Downs Syndrome child is gifted In 1965 a group of concerned parents joined forces to form the Downs Syndrome Association of Metropolitan Toronto With about 150 families Involved they united to address
