Christmas this year we have a movie we can sink our teeth Into Nuts is a raw intense gutsy film that challenges the and doesnt back down Bar bra Strei sands character Claudia Faith Draper forces the audience to give up its prejudices about a lot of things This Is not an easy com fortablc escapist movie But wat ching it is a very rewarding ex Claudia Draper has been charged with manslaughter She Is not yet on trial for this crime she is being fore to defend her sanity first Her parents and the prison psychiatrist are convinced that she Is sick After she socks the high priced lawyer her father hired court assigns Aaron Richard a legal aide lawyer to defend her Everyone is ready to commit her and Claudia fights with everything in her power to defend Levinsky decides to believe her and the movie follows the competency trial and all the harrowing emo tional issues that are uncovered Claudia Draper is not a sweet pliable woman who meekly submits to the mole professionals who ore trying to decide her future Clearly these men lawyers doctors judges father would be a lot more comfortable if she would behave as a woman should behave and not fight back is one male In the bunch who does not demand What does Claudia do that makes these men so mad For starters she is a very high priced hooker who has been making a year for the lasl three years and she shows no remorse about this And she is from a wealthy family a happy and lov ing family How can she do these things Robert Webber the defense attorney tries to Imply that she is obviously crazy to be practising such a dreadful profession And she Is clearly not a hooker with a heart of gold Claudia makes no apologies docsn care about their she just wants to make sure she I arrested for prostitution And her sins are even more terrible She withdrew from the peo ple who loved her from her husband and her parents Why did she do such an inexplicable thing Why does she show flagrantly sexual behavior to the psychiatrist Why doesnt she answer him verbally rather than flashing him Why Is she rude and uncontrolled in court why does she anger the judge deliberate ly Why doesnt she love her father her mother Why wont she behave like an obedient little girP All these questions are answered as the hearing unfolds Through he testimony of Mrs Kirk her mother Mr Kirk her stepfather through Legion ladies Mo the psychiatrist through the testimony of herself It Is an unlovely talc bul 1 will not reveal Its core although it is pretty easy to guess what happened This hearing Is emotionally drain Ing not just lor the characters for the audience No one Is a clear villain except perhaps Mor the Incompetent and arrogant psychiatrist A very good por a very typical mole Herald Special It Is hoped you all had a very happy New Years For all who called to Inquire about the December news I am sorry but I cannot dictate what the editor will have space for Suffice It say the news was presented for publication as usual We did drape our charter in memory of our dear comrade Ethel Murray and we also welcom ed new member to our auxiliary Joan Gillespi there will be zone crib in Georgetown Jan Our Jean your secretary has asked me let you know your dues are payable for the year before Jan Try and get your dues to her before this date as she will then have to send out a reminder to you and as you know this can be a costly business Before closing would ask you all to pray for Jean band Corn as he Is extremely 111 and I do know that prayer works Thank you There will be mecllng for the Plymouth group in the lounge on Thursday Jan at pm my Bridge winners Duplicate Bridge winners at the Legion Hall for Jan 11 were In first place Harry and Mike second place Agnes McGregor and Wayne Hillock and In third place Jock Brown and Earl Ryder reveal the end although I will say that it Is true to movie and as such totally satisfying Tills is an Oscar calibre per formance from Streisand And I am not one of her fans She Is angry she Is fierce she is hurt and vulnerable Every emotion Is perfectly expressed All the rage seethes out in little bursts Streisand Is simply marvellous Dreyfuss Is also excellent though his is mostly supporting role hated the beard though There la a stellar ensemble in this movie Maureen Staple on Is hurt horrified mother Karl Maiden is Ihe puzzled loving step father Eli is the outraged Robert Webber is the defense attorney and James Whit more is the judge Everyone Is good which is only what one would expect of these actors Nuts is a thoroughly feminist argument although the director Is a man Martin Bill and the author Is one also Tom Topor Claudia is be ing condemned by a paternalistic society of which she is both the pro duct and the victim There arc some extremely important issues raised In this movie It Is very good film excellent entertainment TRIO HOW AVAR ABLE PARK STORE VHS MOVIE RENTALS 2 LAST DAYS EOOIE MURPHY RAW THE LAST DAYS NUT5 conn St NY MODELS WANTED KIDS TEENS
