THE HERALD Wednesday February IMSPage By BRIAN MacLEOD Herald Staff The Towns General Committee has approved a expansion west of he Acton urban boundary despite a ISOname petition opposing the expansion Lawyers representing Acton west landowner Martin Goose and three companies Holdings Keamork Ltd and came to an agreement on the expan sion before the start of the Ontario Municipal Board Hearing Feb 1 John Parkinson representing the Region of told the Board of the deal and his request for an ad Journment of the hearings until tomorrow Feb was granted by Chairman Doug Col bourn Mr Parkinson wanted to wait and see if town council and possibly Regional council endorsed the com promise before the hearings pro ceeded Town council must reaffirm the decision at the Feb meeting After a lengthy debate most of which took place behind closed doors council endorsed the agree ment Councillor Rick Bonnet te who called for the General Committees version of a recorded vote was the only councillor to oppose the expan sion Councillors Norm Elliott and Gerald declared a conflict of interest because they or their relatives hold land bordering on the proposed Acton expansion the agreement leaves only Canada Packers and possibly some residents opposed to the extension of the Acton East boundary Lawyers for both sides were can did in discussing their reasons or the settlement problems By DONNA KELL Herald Special A shortage of lowcost housing in Hills has caused Mayor Miller and Region coun cillors to form committees to review and solve he problem We want to see what we can do as a council to assist In affordable hous ing said the mayor In an interview last week The mayor and four coun clllors In Hills will meet in February housing co ordinator Stan Mary Housing Manager of the Halton Housing Authority provided statistics to demonstrate the problem In the Hills area said Mrs we have nine families hree of whom are high priority seniors of whom are high priority and two physically handicapped people all of whom are wafting for housing High priority describes people who have greater need she said Mayor Miller and town coun cil arc also concerned about housing the needy including improved hous ing for seniors Affordable homes within the Halton Hills area will in clude granny suites modular homes and seniors homes said Mayor Miller Mayor Miller and his councillors have formed a task force to deal with all aspects of housing he said Ward Cook has been ap pointed chairman of the ask force while Mayor Miller Is of the whole committee The committee will hold hopeful two meetings a month said Mayor Miller The committee he explained will review the housing situation and decide If amendments should be ap plied for he federal and provin cial governments
