change your life I Mill St Georgetown By Tom Tiede WASHINGTON NEA I have for more than a year been working slav ishly on what is to be oral history book of the century Ive inter viewed diverse people who have lived through the entire period and the conversations constitute personal memories of this remarkable time One of the people is a nonagenarian who has been in the KIux for more than BO years A friend says I should not have Included him In the project He claims the old racist Is a degenerate dinosaur whose life has no good meaning and whose views should not be set down in popular history Oh I bring the matter up in the light of something else The cose of Jimmy The Greek Snyder The longtime CBSTV sports personality was re cently dismissed from his job and widely condemned as a barbarian for insensitive remarks that he made concerning the ancestral engineering of black athletes The public reaction seems exces sive Its also In keeping with an un fortunate tendency of the Peo ple have had a difficult time deciding what Is right and wrong through these years but once done they have been insistent and woe be the likes of devi ants such as Jimmy Snyder and my el derly bigot Thai Insistence is such actually that I am required to add a disclaimer here I do not sympathize with the views of cither man I wonder how It is that become celebri ties In the first place and further have marched for the right of all hu man beings to be respected as equal Also I am humbled by the town clerk of He Is the gentleman In the 19th chapter of Acts whose ad vice was to do nothing heedlessly and who was popular in the early part of the century the temperate people of yesterday thought it was wise In all things to consult the town clerk of I have Jimmy The Greek got a bum rap He was not only blitzed he was ruined and he died for our sins one of Buy A Lb which Is conformity The nation is in creasingly comfortable with the or thodox and the acceptable and it de mands adherence to conventional wisdom ever shifting though it is This convention used to favor prej udice It was the law in some portions of the country through the 1910s The Southern states created two societies color coded and the conformity then was to accept or else the superiority of whites the oppression of blacks and Institutionalized moral corruption Now its turned to another extreme And It seems just as unfortunate on the opposite side of the coin of fash ion Snyder got out of Hoe thus he was crushed The old in my book does not follow suit forget him The rule as its been written Is that no one skids who stays In the rut And I concede there may be tempt ing reasons for the rule Prejudice murders reason for example Igno rance is not bliss at all Its no fun to read about or to witness cruelty and as It has been nicely said before the worst thing you can do for some peo ple Is to let them be themselves Yet these are the dues to be paid in a genuinely free Intolerance Is ugly however It Is explained and even racists can be victims A poet of the last century James Russell Lowell wrote that he didnt want to live in a nation where everyone Is dreadfully like everyone else he passed on just in Americans today are pressured to look talk act feel and think he same Its cultural consensus The lev eling prevails In education business sports family life and social conduct and one divided Into a pair of classifications those with two beads and those with one The room is shrinking for the ec centrics Its no longer advisable to be an outrageous or a silly old man Uniformity thats the ticket Its the new loyalty As for Jimmy The Greek he is ad mittedly a blow hard If not a primi tive as well But must he really be de stroyed There may be hope for a man who can occasionally and spec tacularly make a fool of himself and for a society that has the courage and forbearance to accept it N ELLS DRIVING SCHOOL Safatf FEBRUARY 15th TO MARCH 3th Monday Wednesday Night to 930 Day CRASH
