encouraging turnout If last Wednesdays opening ses sion of regis trail on for the Georgetown Baseball Association Is any Indication the community may be looking forward to the biggest ball season they have seen In a number of years GBA President Hal Ridley and his coworkers were literally swamped at Holy Cross for their first of three scheduled registrations About youngsters were signed up throughout the evening which r about half of the registrations taken over all last season We want to thank the people who were there to sign up Ridley says It helps us get the leagues organis ed earlier Further registration sessions have been scheduled for m again at Holy Cross School on Tuesday March and Thursday March added on their regular fees At present it looks as though will be enough registrations at the Bantam level for the association to proceed with plans for a Bantam house league program Ridley says there likely ta a few Midget- aged players who will be Included in the league play as well Last year the GBA ran a Its that time again to dust off the ball gloves and get the batting eye in The Georgetown Baseball Association held Its tint registration cation Wednesday night and ex perienced an excellent turn on I Here Shane Mandarino five adds for the Bantam and pro grams to stand on their own The GBA Is continuing to seek volunteers who are willing to act as convenors for the various programs These positions would Involve set ting up schedules and looking after their respective levels once they are launched Other are also required for projects such as fund rats shares frustrations ins A few of the coaching positions thai have remained open have now been filled John Wright has come forward to coach the Georgetown Bantam A rep team and he will be assisted by GordHagen Georgetown will also be able to field a Tyke rep earn this season Ms to the Uit of players for the upcoming season while Ms three- yearold brother Blake watches and waits until he comet baseball age Further regUtratloni have been planned for the evenings of March and at Holy Cross School from Dean Marks will serve the team head coach and he will be assisted by Mike and John Rivers Last reason the Tyke team was unable to operate since there was no coach but Ridley says it will be a big boost to the program to have the Tyke team Ihis season because It will help develop players at a younger age Team can make amends Leaf What would hockey dinners be without the Toronto Maple Leafs to pick on Whenever self proclaimed con of the sport hold a forum It seems everyone has an opinion on what It take turn the lowly Leafs Into a respectable hockey team Some point to less than productive trades others say its their draft choices and many focus on the man at the centre of It all In the trenches thats coach John Brophy as the reason tor the Leafs turmoil Broph wants to win and he works hard at It says Leaf centre Greg The coach can only do- acrmnch and then tip to the players on the ice Its one thing to blame the coach but we have to look at ourselves too Terrion expected to link up with the Leafs again on the weekend But while taking some time off to rest a groin Injury be was able to attend the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Dinner as a special guest For and certainly for all the Leafs the current hockey cam has been one of near total frustration The firing of general manager Gerry McNamara was somewhat of a shock but at the some time in table Everybody was waiting for something to happen says They had to make changes whether it was the coach or whatever It worked for awhile but now we re back to Square One Terrion shares the frustrations of team members and fans alike Last year after a leas than fruitful season the Leafs backed Into the playoffs and actually surprised a lot I this year has been more frustrating than last year Terrion says Every year the team is sup posed to get better But It seems we re going more sideways than straight ahead It again looks as though the Leafs are playoff bound since the only team worse than them in the entire NHL the Minnesota North Stars happen to be In the same division And is at least hoping the Leafs can Editor For someone who has never been a planner Ron has gone with the flow quite nicety At the ripe age of IT M holds the plum position of host for Hockey Night In Canada television broadcasts handed to after the departure of Dave Hodge MacLean was In Georgetown recently as emcee for the annual Hockey Heritage Dinner Anyone who was there could see why hes so successful as a broadcaster MacLean played hockey himself in his native Alberta up until the Juvenile level At that point be realized to become a broadcaster he would have to lake certain safeguards That meant leaving the game behind as a player but he has managed to maintain the tie This season was his ninth as a referee It seemed like a strange thing when I started MacLean admits its a great form of recreation Youre In your own world for three hours end moat of the rest of the world is forgotten its a great means of stay- Ins In the game when MacLean took over from Hodge entirely as the host of Hockey Night In Canada he had big shoes to fill Prior to Hodges departure he had been worked into a rotation when Hodge was honoring com mitments to a Vancouver radio sta tion Yet says he didnt fed the pressure most would have ex pec ted when he took the reins When I was in Red Deer there was no Leafs on he says We saw mainly westbased teams on television so David was not quite the Institution be was in this market knew the job coming to Toronto and there wasnt a fear of the unknown But admits the toughest part from his perspective was In March when Hodge and the came to a parting of ways and he became a bit of a martyr for the network One of MacLeans duties with Hockey Night In Canada is the unen viable positions of serving as a backboard for the Wrath Grapes Don Cherry is certainly one of most outspoken men in hockey to day and it is MacLean who acts as his foil though sees Cherry In a different light than most others pro bably do I wall the hockey man whos been road Hes seen so many things that everything now seems to twig a memory MacLean says Cherry has chosen to view certain facets of hockey that others might Ignore most notably fighting and the physical side of the game I think he does thia more because its one aspect most broadcasters address But above all Cherry lets his true colors show says He loves to defend hockey Hes a patriot You dont knock Canada and dont knock hockey As far as what the future balds MacLean Isnt one to consult crystal balls Ive never been a planner and never a goal Better be says Things have Just fallen into place As It stands now I enjoy what I do and I still find It challenging Im an Inquisitive person and with inter viewing people every day la dif ferent GET THE MOST FOR YOUR ONEY Trust the professionals below who are specially trained In the new tax
